Does Geelong practice this the same amount of times as other teams?
Our accuracy is not good, so is it a blemish only or should it be concentrated on more?
My concern last year was that at stages the players wanted to dish off too often to the extent that they looked like they did not want to take the shot. A large amount of our misses are from 30m out

I have been told that someone from the club said that the players had 30 mins of goal kicking practice this week and that this was the first time in Mark Thompsons coaching career at the GFC. Thats nine seasons.

I would hope your forwards would take it upon themselves to get there 100-150 shots in after training.

Not quite right. This is the first season where they have done 30 minutes practice per week.

I've posted this in another thread, but Steve Johnson said on the Sunday Footy show that they do 30 mins goal kicking practice the day before the main training day.

Also, that some of the players were trying new kicking routines, which may explain some of the missed shots against Hawthorn.

I have been down to Geelong training quite a few times in my life, and I have never, ever seen any player at the club do that, ever. It surprises me too. You hear of basketballers putting up thousands of shots in the gym (a little different I know), but I honestly don't think I have ever seen anyone do a goal kicking session either on their own or as a group.

On Monday night on this subject, Grant Thomas pointed out that coaches are under significant pressure from conditioning coaches and physios to NOT allow the players to kick excessively, as kicking is deemed as a significant cause of wear and tear on the players!
I get it but it did blow my mind somewhat.

Yep, I've been down a few times in the past couple of years too. Most of the shots come from circle work and drills where a group of players run the ball together from defence down the field, usually ending when a forward runs into an open goal with no pressure 20 metres out. Not really practice.

You guys can't be serious.... Gamble/Lonergan/Hawkins/Stokes must at least be doing some goal-kicking training in their own time. They are supposed to be professional athletes.

Someone needs to follow these guys 24/7 for a week to find out if they do any and report back :D

Correct. The worst thing about this for me is that the forwards are only involved to provide a lead and target for the guys running the ball up the ground to hit. The rest of the time they just stand aside. Surely it is not to much to ask for them to go back and have a shot under at the very least some token pressure from the other guys in the group - to finish off the work so to speak.

They do practice 'snaps' a lot however, both at training and before a game. I don't find it a coincidence that I am more confident with most of the players kicking a goal from a snap, in play, than from a set shot, dead in front.

True again, although I think if you looked at the stats (in a large enough sample size), we wouldn't be all that much more accurate from snaps in play than we are from set shots, it's just that when you miss a 'simple' set shot, it looks far worse than a missed snap.

Steve Johnson and Paul Chapman are two of the greatest exponents of the snap in the game today, not to mention Ablett who is one of the most clutch snap shot players you would ever want to see, so it is not surprising we perform well in this area. Coincidently (or perhaps not), these are guys I would want taking set shots. Chappy is rock solid, Gaz is much improved and Stevey, although ungainly, is pretty reliable. Maybe it is just a skill thing, as it is pretty clear how skilled these guys are.

Ling is a bit of an anomaly, as I don't rate his skills as elite, yet his goal kicking is certainly elite, if not the very best in the comp.

Does anyone remember the last training session before the granny in 2007,
when Bomber kicked 3 in a row from 50 out city end on the boundry?

The crowd went wild was the highlight of the session for me. :)
