Goals That Broke Your Heart

Brad Johnson on the goal line at Manuka (Canberra) back in 2005 in the dying seconds to win the game. Those 4 points cost us a double chance at season's end. But I don't expect to get much sympathy here for that one.

Cam Faulkner's best game ever. ;)

What about Simon Beasley having a set shot for goal to win on the final siren (or had he marked the ball just before it went - long time ago) at Carrara v the Bears and a whole bunch of Bears rent-a-fans ran on the ground and got in his way. He missed and the Bears won. Security very lax that day.

Don't forget Mike Richardson sitting on the shoulders of Matthew Campbell on the mark.

Final World Cup qualifiers are in November, always.

You could add the three-point loss we suffered to Richmond in the reserves if you want to argue about something bad that happened on the same ground and on the same day as the Jarman heart-breaking goal.

hahahhahhah no sympathy here sorry :D
How about the 37 point comeback from the roos against the bulldogs after half time at the Telstra dome in 03 that you guys handed out to us ? :(

Do you know the worst thing about the Jarman goal that burns? IMO we would have gone on and won the grand final. Unfortunately Nicky Winmar and Stewart Lowe had deaths in the family grand final week so they played under difficult circumstances. Consequently Adelaides half back line kicked about 8 between them. Mc Leod had a field day, so did Smart and Shane Ellen kicked 3 from half back.
(

Winmar's father died midweek but Loewe didn't lose a family member - his marriage broke down in, er, rather unconventional circumstances.

Congrats on the thread for starters,

For mine, the toughest to cop was Jeff White in 2005. Gieshens pathetic story wasthat he was awarded a free because Skipper shepherded in the ruck . A cursory glance at the video shows Minson and Jamar in position to contest the knockout. No decision evenly remotely like it paid before or since that day. Nowhere near enough outrage from the sicophantic press.

Five weeks later the team we smashed in round 20(wce) go within four points of winning the flag.

On the upside 1976 round 22 V carlton we need to win or draw to get in the five. B Qinlan marks a ball in the dying seconds around the goal post to stop a carlton score, we draw, we sneak into the five.

i remember the kangas game at Canberra in 2004. Cam fawlkner kicked 3 goals with his first 3 kicks i think. i remember we were down by about 5 goals at 3/4 time. my parents were going somewhere and my sister was at home. I could have stayed home and watched the last quarter but i went with my parents. It wasnt on any radio station and i remember triple m crossing over to their around the ground person and he did a commentary of the last 20 secs. i was going berserk and now i sit and watch every last quarter :D

Ablett's goal in the '94 prelim after the siren in last qtr - don't know how we would have gone against the Eagles in the GF but i'm sure would have put up a better performance than the Catters did.

Mines got to be the goal theat wasnt paid, 1997 Prelim final, when Libba kicked the goal and the goal umpire gave it a point. I was sitting in the top deck of the Northern Stand with my sister and we both saw it was a goal! Thats one goal and one game that will always break my heart.

I hadn’t heard that one before!

As I see it, 1997 was Footscray’s best chance for a premiership in the post-1961 era and I think strongly that had they held on against the Crows, they would have had a clear advantage from playing on a firmer ground than St. Kilda had played on the previous night against North Melbourne. In the Grand Final the Crows adapted to a very fast ground (following a wet first half of September) better than St. Kilda. Together with the absence of Everitt, that as I see it would have given them the flag. A flag after being second last in 1996 would have been a clear record!

These are the ones boys and girls. In '85 we had Essendon's measure - IMO. Mathews had done nothing all game, Hardie was killing him and then in the space of 10 minutes Mathews turns the game on its head. Still have nightmares.

'97 was the year that we all know got away. Even though Jarman kicked the goals I still to this day beleive that is was Wallace and Rehn that won the game for the Crows. Rehn just took Windy apart in that last quarter (on a side note I rekon we just never saw the best of rehn because of that damn center bounce pad). And Wallace for not getting Granty into the game and leaving Wynd in the ruck when he was not giving a contest in the last quarter.

I concur

85 and 97 were arguably the 2 years they really should have won it.

Bit younger then most here but the ones I remember most are: Melbourne in 05, 09 prelim (ffffffuuuuuu Nick Riewolt), Johnsons two misses after the siren and Akers 300th (So many free kicks missed in the last minute)

Good times. Since that game in 05, I will forever hate Jeff White and umpires.

Jarman and Brownless are the 2 that really burn (Jarman actually missed an easier set shot a couple of minutes earlier to put them in front), but Riewoldt's last 2 goals in the 09 prelim aren't far behind. First one was from a strong grab after St Kilda won back possession after an Akermanis deliberate OOB on the wing (if only the umpire swallowed his whistle like the umpire did for Tarrant's obvious deliberate OOB on Friday night), second one was off the deck in ther goal square to finally kill us off - again they won possession from a ruck infringement against Hudson when we had good field position to press hard. Daggers in the heart both of them.

Yeah, if only - Aker kicked about 60 metres along the boundary while Tarrant slammed it straight toward the line!!!!!

Hope I wasn't too hard on Manfeii but he just 'happened' to find a thread about 4 years old about goals that broke our hearts and had not heard of the debate about Libba's 'miss' in 97?

For me they are:

1. Darren Jarman's last goal in 1997 Prelim
2. Nick Riewoldt's in the last minute 2009 Prelim
3. The goal after Max Rooke's hit on Johnno in the 2008 Prelim (blew the margin out to 22 in a tight match).
4. Jeff White - Round 21, 2005.
5. Billy Brownless, 1995 (or 94, can't remember) Qualifying Final.

What is worse, are the missed shots in Prelims that broke your heart!
  • Libba, Mark West, Chris Grant vs Adelaide 1997
  • Eagleton, Minson, Boyd (3rd and 4th quarter) vs Geelong 2008
  • Boyd, Gia (4th quarter) vs St Kilda 2009
  • 1.5 second qtr vs St Kilda 2010

This was the one.

Would have well and truly put it to bed, 35 out directly in front should have been dead-set put straight over the goal umpire's head.

Even worse was the fact that Cook was all alone in the goal square.

Could be argued that kicking into the sun did us no favours, but you have to take your chances.
