Goddard, 26, starts the 2012 season with 185 Saints games and is expected to constantly be linked with a possible move to Fremantle to rejoin his former senior coach Ross Lyon who has taken over the Dockers.

Seriously, read that sentence.

Expected to be constantly linked with a possible move...

About as much credibility as a horoscope reading. Less actually, since horoscopes don't foreshadow something they're about to do themselves like it's some sort of revelation...

No offense to op but kind of annoying how often articles from that site are posted here. Nothing but irrelevant speculation nearly every single time.

Well, until he signs a new contract, there will be speculation and we're as good a club as any for him to be linked to, maybe more so because of Lyon.

Should have saints fans squirming for a while anyway.

This speculation wont go away...and will be hanging around like flies to a piece of shite in 2012. Haggers was having dinner with a collegue late last year who was adament that Goddard wants to join Freo. Since then he has spruiked this to anyone who will listen. If it comes to fruition he can say "i told you so".

I think he is a terrific player and you would fit Goddard into the best 22 in every team in the AFL.

But if we have a big wad of cash to use then I think it needs to be used a bit more surgically in terms of getting the missing pieces of a Premiership puzzle. I am thinking about how Geelong went after Ottens, or Collingwood went after Jolley and Ball.

If I look at our list then the type of player that would have the most impact in those terms would be along the lines of Joel Selwood, who of course I realise we would not have any chance in getting.

That's the thing isn't it - it's not going to be as easy as some people think to lure big name free agents away from their teams. Loyalty is still a pretty strong concept amongst most AFL players.

I think it will be more a case of clubs striking whenever the opportunity arises to snare a genuine gun like Goddard, regardless of whether he's the perfect missing piece or not.

The rest of the free agent activity will just be fringe players that teams think they can get Sydney-esque rejuvenation out of.

I think there should be a new icon for when people link that site as the impetus for a thread.

Maybe a big **** or a steaming bucket of shyte perhaps. Either way people should be warned they're about to Hacked.

Esti is spot on about credibility. How shrewd of them to say there will be constant specualtion when all they have to do is keep bringing this up to make it right.

Having said that, Goddard is the player type and age I would go all in for. Obviously I mean within all the normal and sensible constraints that go with good list management. If we don't get him it should be because we had the 2nd highest bid or a bunch of other teams got stupid and threw away all their salary cap flexibility.

This is where I'm stuck on it... We finally have a culture around the club where we play hardball at the trade table and we are serious about chopping players and topping up the list through the drafts.

On the one hand I like it, because we wouldn't have to trade for him, but I worry about some of our kids that are potential stars or even borderline stars and what will happen to them when they are all taking reduced salaries so that the club can buy in individual players. How do you tell them to stay loyal to the club when you've effectively dropped their wages to outbid other teams to get a certain player?

Do we even have to out-bid anybody? Isn't the whole point of Free Agency so players get to where they want to go?

If they are an 8 year player then their club has the opportunity to match the offers from rival clubs. 10 years they don't have the option.

But do you honestly think that a player like Goddard wouldn't be fielding offers from more than just Fremantle and St. Kilda? I mean we were out-priced when it came to getting Mitch Clark. His manager would be making calls to every club in the league.

If we did get him he would come at a price and with salary caps the extra he would be getting paid could only come from our other players. The way the new veteran payments are structured now means we won't get any relief there either.

Good point dude. We've got a few contracts to get re-signed too. Depending on how this year pans out, he might want to play for freo at decent, but not astronomical pay, if he sees he could have a crack at a premiership.

would much rather the club had a red hot go at a proven ,class player such as Goddard rather than paying the earth for a questionable talent such as Mitch Clark

Agreed, although Zac Dawson might have made a dent in it if we hadn't initially planned for him.

Or from the coach in a brown paper bag.;)

He'd be a perfect ambassador for Woodside.

600K a year and one of these:
