Given Goddard is a restricted free agent, if we said we would match the offer of other clubs it seems he can't just be taken for nothing as most think.
So with that in mind, what do you think would be a suitable trade for Goddard, or what would you want your club to offer.

I'm confused, I thought you didn't have to trade for Goddard because he is a free agent? Nevertheless, I wouldn't give anything for him, I don't him. Not because he isn't a good player, although certainly not playing to his best this year, but because he wouldn't fit at Collingwood and we have enough of our own to worry about keeping.

I wouldn't expect Carlton to part with too much.

The real question is; can you afford to keep him?

You might have to take what you can get.

I think he deserves a contract of around 300-350 per year, he is sooooo over-rated, it's cringe worthy how the commentators talk about him every week, i don't think the Saints will have any trouble keeping him as i honestly don't any other club will chase him, not hard anyway.

He's a very good player in a very good side.

Top shelf icing.

However, he's not the sort of player you would build a side around.

He's a HB flanker who's nowhere to be seen if another team puts a defensive fwd on him, he was worked out after his steller 2010, a 2010 that many so called experts had him in the top 3 players in the comp, hasn't been a top 50 player since and seriously is not worth that much, never shown form anywhere but the back flank either, never won a club BaF etc etc, take away his 2010 and it would be brendon who?

100% agree - he isn't good enough to play against an opponent and can't stand being manned up across the HBL either. Wants to run free basically. Beautiful kick, good grab but doesn't win enough of his own ball. A good ordinary player now i think Jack Dyer called them. $350K would be a fair amount for him.

Because of his age he is probably worth similar to what Melbourne traded for Mitch Clark. As to the previous scenario if a rival club offers a high $$$ contract and St Kilda matches it i'm sure he would be happy to stay. The issue is the salary cap at St Kilda and whether the club would be happy to let him go and receive compemsation from the AFL.

Some have it wrong here. Restricted FA means he can choose a club , they offer. If his current club matches his must stay or if he is determined to go , its thru the draft.

So , If Goddard wants GWS , they want him and offer 1M a season. Saints match he stays on 1M , Saints do not match he goes to GWS.

So under the proposal of the OP Saints are stuck with him on a big contract and then if wanting to trade him the contract will be tied to him. For the Saints to threaten to match , they must be willing to wear the cost of his contract. If the SC pressure they may not be able to match it without losing other players

GWS is a bad example because he can go straight there as an uncontracted player selection. But yeah, basically it means that St Kilda can't call another clubs bluff and have to say unequivocally yes or no.

The Saints can't match the offer if they don't have the salary cap space though.

I don't think StKilda will have any trouble matching another clubs coin for Goddard.

The question is, would they want to?

No, it was covered by turbo cat. Restricted FA just means the offer can be matched, under no circumstances will St. Kilda be able to get a trade out of him unless they re-sign him and then trade him, which makes no sense.
It makes sense if they want a specific player/draft pick from another club. I see your general point though

Don't think it works like that at all. That defeats the purpose of FA.

maybe but surely the club could use that is a bargaining tool.... i don't see why they can't.

but it could backfire because the asking club doesn't have to honour that trade, nor does the original club.

i guess it's kinda insurance.... we get to keep our bloke, but if another club desperately wants him and they offer up a trade they we like then we'll take it....

as said above it doesn't garuantee. either club can easily reneg on the trade.

I dont know why the GWS would want Goddard, his attitude is shocking.
Then again, they mightn't even want him anyway!

Plays angry, cant handle a tag and I think its fair to say that he is a very skillful
and talented player - but doesnt get the most out of himself.

As for the compo, will be around the same as Bullies got for Ward.

Freo/Rossy can outbid the Saints, who have had problems with the salary cap in recent years.

I'm long in the tooth & can remember WA players who had signed to play in Vic in the 60s & 70s but had to play out the year in the WANFL (as it was back then) - they got no fun out of playing just as BJ is right now.

Mark it down, Freo is where Goddard is going, going for finals glory.
