Review Good, Bad and Ugly vs Hawthorn

It's not experience - it's coaching and leadership.

Port went from a rabble, to a well structured, highly disciplined team, in one pre season.

That wasn't because they were more experienced - it's because they have a coach who is a genuine leader, who drove it and demanded it.
How do you explain 2012 then. We weren't quite the rabble Port were, but we weren't that far away

Dude I love Danger and would blow a load if he played for the Hawks, but Mitchell was clearly BOG last night.

Sure Danger had 40 odd disposals compared to Mitchell's 28 but on the night Sammy was far more effective with ball in hand.

I am all for parochialism, but danger was dominant. He had nearly as many contested possessions as Mitchell had total possessions.

Danger will get 10 votes in the AFLCA awards on tuesday and the 3 Charlie votes.

Champion data which tends to drive both these days didn't consider even close.

Agreed. Sando has previously said we do not want to be a shoot-out team. Haven't got the rebound speed or foot skills.

We need to play wet weather footy in any weather

Problem is the opposition will play clean crisp dry weather footy;)

Ugly
Luke Brown gets pinged for deliberate out of bounds. Ben Rutten the only player anywhere near that side of the ground. Starts running across to man the mark, then stops, instead goes back to pick up his man. No one stands the mark! Simpkins is allowed to play on and kicks his second goal of the quarter. Truck!

That's why you need an experienced defence

Ok I'll bite... why can I read this shirt if we're looking in a mirror? o_O

I wondered that too, I reckon i flipped it in Paint.NET or something, I took the photo a few months ago when the t-shirt arrived.

Like your bathroom...

Thank you. We haven't changed it since we bought it, but it's nice. Clawfoot bath!

Ugly: Port fans flocking to a MB gameday thread like birds to a dead kangaroo on the road.

Why do they hate Danger so much
? They all seem to respect Sloane, but can never credit anything good to Danger.

The Ebert factor...

Well said. But to pressure opponents....any opponents....you need to be able to catch them first. It does not make one single brass razoo's bit of difference how good or bad your pressuring skills are - if you're regularly 5-10m away from your opponent when he has the ball (or when he's about to receive it), you're not going to be able to pressure him to make a mistake. Our Outside Mids (do we have any?) have lead in their boots.
Missed mackay & his tackling + pressure.

We could not afford to leave the hawks quality ball users so loose as their disposal is quality under little pressure.

The amount of times hawthorn players manged to get their arms free in the tackle to dish off to runner was remarkable..... seriously it's tackling 101 pin the damn ****ing arms! Get Charlie to run a tackling sesh cos he's they only one that tackles properly.

Good
50,000 plus supporters turning up
Danger,Sloane,Smith,Jenkins,Jacobs,Crouch
Jenkins becoming a solid Forward
Bad
Betts a stinker,Rutten,
Having Porps as a Sub should have been Crouch Jnr,
Ugly
SKILL,SKILL,SKILL

PS I hope our recruiters are looking for Players who have SPEED, that's what's missing

Hurts having Mackay and Kedge on the sidelines.
They provide that little more run...

Thought we were the better team for much of that game but 2 things stood out to me as reasons why we lost.

1. Two heinous individual errors when we'd hit the lead cost us all momentum - Martin's miss from the top of the square and Douglas dropping a simple handball in the centre square when we were attacking leading to Gunston goal.

2. We lost by 2 goals and were outscored 53-0 in two 15 minute periods in Q1 and either side of 3/4 time. Could not absorb pressure when things weren't going our way.
Martin didn't miss when we had the lead.

I thought if you played on from an out on the full free or deliberate out of bounds, you were playing on out of bounds and therefore the ball is out of bounds and needs a throw in. I must have missed the rule change amongst all the other bastardisation of the rules.

Ugly: Luke Brown not being sufficiently aware/educated of the rushed behind rule to know that he could have just rushed that over the line rather than give away a clear free kick for deliberate.

Yes he did. Made it 45-39 in the second quarter. 52 seconds later, Ben McEvoy kicked a goal to tie the scores.

The Douglas effort was more critical IMO - 3rd quarter, we had huge momentum, crowd was deafening, we were running free through the corridor - enter Douglas.

Sando referred to this in the presser too as a real momentum killer.

Douglas has built up plenty of credit - all gone now, has had a poor year

He was miles from the line? In Dustin Martin territory.

Wasn't a great kick obviously

Very much an issue. On the whole, we are making big inroads with this (just look at the Showdown and Collingwood games), but the loss to the Hawks was a huge step backwards.
