And Lyons would be the difference there.....I think not.

Well, he'd have had a crack and I would have taken him over Douglas's abysmal effort on Saturday...

but then again, why would Lyons want to leave a winning team, to join a losing one?

I don't know how long people are going to keep going with this bullshit but essentially it came down to Matt Crouch or Jarryd Lyons and the list management opted for Matt, rightly so IMO. Both lads are inside mids, both lack a touch of pace, both can win the hard ball, Crouch definitely spreads better from the contest as is shown by the amount of uncontested possessions he regularly racks up. Crouch has the superior DE% across their careers amplified by the weekends football Crouch 40 disposals @77.5%, 2 Clangers - Lyons 26 disposals @ 53.8% 5 clangers. Now I don't have access to the players G.P.S. numbers but our coaching staff do and I'd be very surprised if Crouch wasn't superior to Lyons in the amount of ground they cover off the ball match day.....This was Stewie Dew's problem with Lyons game so I'd say it's a fair chance our coaching staff may have had issues along those lines.

Surely Crows followers can see list management over the last few years with our drafting has had an emphasis on speed and endurance to slightly lesser degree, all of Jones, McHenry, Hamill and Butts have good speed and endurance from the last draft, then you have the likes of Milera, Gallucci, Doedee, Poholke, McPherson, Signorello, Davis....no slow coaches there. KPP players Fogarty and Himmelberg probably the only 2 exceptions. Personally I suspect if it wasn't for the bad PR it would have garnered we would likely not given rookie spots to Edwards and Jarman because both were quite pedestrian pace wise and not too flash endurance wise....no real surprise we moved both on.

We still could have kept him as depth instead of wasting money on Thommo in 2017. That way we wouldn't have been forced to play an injured Greenwood in the GF. Then it would have been either him v Dougie and we're still ahead. It was terrible list management, there's no other way to cut it. The coaches also undervalued him to about the same extent that the over-value Mackay.

It wasn't terrible list management at all. Lyons wants to play AFL footy, the one thing the crows couldn't offer him on a regular basis. They willingly let him go to seek greater opportunity. The only gig he could get was Gold Coast, Gold Coast for FFS. Yes he has played well, but remember he went from a team that had plenty of midfield depth to a team that had none. The Crows did the right thing by Lyons and allowed him to go seek greater opportunity because they knew he was behind so many and for team balance he simply didn't fit. As far as I am concerned it was great list management. It allowed us to give Greenwood and push development into new players. You are dealing in then hypothetical and its a waste of time. It was over two seasons ago and if he was worth anything, he wouldn't be at Brisbane now.

He is not an attacking mid. Would be terrible at Dougies role. Worse than Dougie. I dont have him in my 22.

And why would he stay as depth. We offered him a contract.to stay as depth. He got a better offer. He is good enough to be a best 22 inside mid at a club without a M Crouch or Greenwood calibre inside mid.

His best chance at a prolonged AFL career was the Suns now the Lions. Both lacking inside mids.

Given he just beat the reigning premiers and got 26 possessions, i don't think he minds.

It's good to know we've moved on from "trading Lyons was a good list management decision for the club" to "trading Lyons was a good list management decision for Lyons"

Because it certainly wasn't a good list management decision on our end. He was worth more to us as depth than pick 43

And it won't surprise me within 2 years if Lyons struggles to hold his spot at the Lions with the highly touted young midfield talent they have waiting in the wings like Ely Smith, Tom Berry, Tom Joyce, Connor McFadyen, Ben Keays, Noah Answerth and Brandon Starcevich all quicker than Lyons to go with the youngsters like Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry, Zac Bailey and Rhys Mathieson already staking claims to be part of one of the most powerful midfield groups in the AFL. Then we have Lachie Neale still only 25, Dane Zorko,Ryan Bastinac, Mitch Robinson as the older heads. Brisbane have also made no secret of the fact they see exciting talent Cam Rayner as being very capable of transitioning into the midfield once he builds up his tank.

If Brisbane can keep this bunch of talented youngsters together they're certainties to move up the ladder rapidly IMO and nothing helps retention more than on field success.

I honestly think Lyons was brought in as a stop gap for Raynor. He will make a pretty good inside mid.

lol at all the people thinking he would want to stay for depth. Lyons is a strong bodied player but he is slow which is a huge complaint by everyone with our side. I also wonder why all the people having a cry he isn't on our list aren't complaining about his 53% disposal efficiency. last time I checked the same people demand those players get dropped. This thread should be closed because this embarrasses us supporters who dont like to complain about everything the club does. I didn't see the Eddie Betts, Bryce Gibbs and Sam Jacobs threads on the Carlton board after the weekend, the Tom Lynch one on the St Kilda board wasn't around either. Should I continue? because every board seems to move on but us!

And Lyons was smart enough to get a development role in the backend of his contract, so he's still setup even if they move him out the AFL side. Imagine it'll be like Matty Wright for us.

He has done well for himself.

Of course he could just have just taken the "depth contract" we offered him. Would probably still be on our list on year to year deals. May have got a few games last year.

But no he backed himself in to carve out a decent AFL career which will hold him well for his future.

Our club wanted to keep him. As depth. But he knew there were opportunities out there for him at another club and took it.

Good on him.

He's making me think of Mark Cosgrove.

No, it actually came down to a decision between Lyons and Poholke. You dont seriously think Poholke is anywhere the player Lyons is do you?

How is that?
We drafted Poholke the same year we didn't meet Lyons contractual requirements?

Poholke was the deemed the best player left by Ogilvie when it came to that pick 44, the strong mail I got at the time was we had hoped to draft Patrick Lipinski but the Dogs took him surprisingly early. WaynesWorld19 can verify we had very strong interest in Lipinski.

Gets to play with his brother as well which I'm sure is a nice bonus.

EFA
Unless Corey shows amazing improvement soon the only time they're likely to play together would be in the NEAFL with the midfield talent they've brought in this last draft.
