DON'T want to cast too much of a cloud over the excitement of the next week or so (fingers crossed) but with Goodes failing to come up for finals and having his season declared, is anyone else wondering just what the future is for the champ?

For the sake of discussion, what happens if he suffers a setback in pre-season? What happens if his knee is worse than everyone, including himself, is thinking? Is it at all possible we've seen Goodes' last game? It's a terrible thought but it is one possible reality ...

Has a year left on his contract so I would be pretty confident in saying next year will be his last. Had high hopes of him hitting 400, but at this rate will be lucky to hit the 350.

I have had these same thoughts, but didn't want to say them out loud in case it's true.

I'm quitely afraid of the end of our season, in case we hear "Swans have called a press conference". :(

It would be a sad day, but there's nothing more he could achieve or get out of his career that he hasn't already... Dominated every position on the field, won 2 premierships, captaining 1. Won 2 Brownlows, multiple AA's, broke all sorts of club records and won multiple games off his own boot. He couldn't possibly have any regrets.

Absolutely ... and yeah, it WOULD be a sad day, truly the end of an era, but I think at least what's happened this season has prepared everyone for the inevitable happening sooner rather than later.

Yet to prove himself as a sub.. though I suppose that's not on the field to begin the game

Its weird that the premiership last year, a game which he wrote himself in the annals of being a legend, could be the game that could end his career, even though he played some pearler's this year. But without that GF game.......

If anything he will play next year and thats it. Maybe an announcement in the off season to let everyone know its his last and to spur them up for another flag?

I doubt he'll retire this year. He's being payed so well and, from what all the players had been saying, he was training so conscientiously that I think he has enough left in the tank to go one more year and then retire.

I also thought 400 was a possibility for him about 18 months ago but it just looks like his body is starting to fail him in terms of picking up injuries and then recovering from those injuries. It'd be a monumental day when he does play for the last time. I don't think anyone can argue against him being one of the best two Swans to have ever played and there will be an argument EVENTUALLY (not immediately by any means) for him being placed in the Legend category of the AFL Hall of Fame, I believe.

First point, without a doubt. He and Bob Skilton will take that honour from this point on. As for the second point, he'll make the Hall of Fame either 1st or 2nd year he is eligible to enter it and that is no mean feat in itself. But to get to Legend status will be a long term thing and something some of us might not see.

As for retirement, he'll give next year a shot and try everything he has to play as many games as he can before he even thinks about hanging up his boots

Rumours on SEN today that Goodes would be named this week. Was ruled out for year to remove media attention. I dont believe its true but I sure wish it was

We'll let you know if he gets off the plane. Sounds like BS to me

Couldn't this thread at least wait until the seasons over?

Didn't he pretty much laugh off that suggestion last week on his interview on CH7 during the QF?
I'd be very very surprised if this was his last year.. In fact I predict further Goodesy goodness in 2015!

Goodes will be at Discount Chemist Warehouse in Newtown tomorrow afternoon. I might wander up and ask him if he's pulling the pin.

I wanna talk about i NOWWWWWWW ... waaaaaaaahhhhh ... Muummmmmmmmm ...

If Goodes pulls a miracle and plays again this season Im calling this thread genius. However if not I will label you a bigfooty masochist. Its like a punts post only literate.
So many great stories and topics, we have 3 days to go, one win away from a chance at back to back flags and you really want to talk about this right now?

Twice now he's jumped in the air, landed a bit awkwardly, and done his knees. Not even a bad collision, just an awkward landing.

His knees are shot. It's not something that's going to get better. I hope he can play on, but it might just keep happening.

Well, not RIGHT now, as I'm very tired and Mum says it's bedtime ... but tomorrow? Yes. And I am prepared to stamp my feet ...

If his future was real cloudy you almost think he would be still busting his guts for one last burst now in the finals thinking i have nothing to lose

I expect at least 10 more years and a couple of brownlows

I wouldn't be surprised if Goodes returned against Freo. The way Horse ruled him out for the rest of the season was strange. Horse said he was ruled out for the rest of the year, yet hadn't reinjured himself, which is a strange call to make. I'd expect Horse to have said Goodes hadn't reinjured himself but is "unlikely" to feature for the rest of the year. But to immediately rule him out for the year was just a bit odd, particularly since he hadn't re-injured himself.

As for Goodes retiring, it definitely won't happen at the end of 2013, and probably won't happen after 2014 either. Sometimes players have a bad run with injuries over a certain period but once they recover from them they're good to go (albeit not at 100%). It's just that when players hit 30+ they're not just overcoming injuries but they're also in a race against time (added to the fact that at that age you recover slower as well). It's not a case of, oh, you're over 30, you've copped an injury, you will never recover from that. It's just that at that age, you lose speed, athleticism etc and if you have no other strings to your bow the end comes quickly. Goodes luckily has a lot of facets to his game, so once he overcomes his knee issues I see him contributing again. This definitely won't be the last we see of him.

GTS I have to agree. Spates of injuries happen to rookies too. Goodes pushing himself so hard to get back in time for finals would not have helped. Needs a nice break, an easing into pre-season and a couple of aspirins.

I also agree with lock33 that this thread's premature.

Goat, you're being immature. If you get out of bed or stamp your feet one more time I'll get really angry and you won't be allowed to watch the game on Saturday.
