Number 1 on the Billboard charts with his mega-hit Somebody That I Used to Know.

First Australian act to hit number one in the US singles chart since Savage Garden and first Australian solo act to hit number one since Olivia in 1981.

(Yeah, I know Olivia isn't technically Australian. Nor is Gotye for that matter I guess).

The song doesn't do much for me but it's great to see an Australian act on top of the US charts nevertheless.

Well done!

Amazing how successful it's been. I loved it for the first little while and listened to it a lot. It;s been played so much now I don't listen to it all that much anymore, but if it comes on on the radio I'm still happy to listen to it.

The album isn't bad either. It's such an eclectic mix of sounds and styles though that it is hard to come back often to for me. Some of the tracks are good quality though.

The Lords Prayer by Sister Janet Mead is a better song and a better US number 1 by an Aussie artist.
I remember it well. Circa 1973/74. I was always struck by the originality of its lyrics. :)

But this thread isn't here to compare the respective merits of US No 1's by Aussie acts. It's to compliment and/or acknowledge the current incumbent.

Not that The Lord's Prayer by Sister Janet Mead made it to number one on the US charts anyway.

Correct Sherb but it was the first song by an Australian artist to sell one million copies in the US.

And it shits on that ****ing horrible Gotye song mentioned in the op.

**** I'd rather hear Helen Reddy sing I Am Woman a thousand times in a row than hear that gutter pus again. And that was the first song by an Aussie to reach number one on the Billboard Charts.....

Well, if that's your point, why say it was a no 1 when it wasn't?

I already gathered you didn't like the song. It doesn't do a lot for me either. :)

As I said, I just wanted to congratulate an Australian act on achieving a very difficult feat. Well done. :thumbsu:

I ****ed up mate. I knew it was either the first number 1 or the first to sell a million, took the 50/50 and went the wrong option.

Yeah look great achievement but as a passionate fan of Australian music I just wish it was a good song... I know you are a Sherbet fan and they wrote far more beautiful songs than this, Midnight Oil wrote lyrically and politically better songs, The Church and many other bands wrote better melodies and more attractive pop/rock music, geez I could go on and on...

Right time right place for the lad and good luck to him but **** we have produced so much more better music than this that I am astounded this particular song was what the yanks latched onto.

Totally agree.

It might have been a bit naive of me, but I genuinely just wanted to acknowledge the achievement.

I'm quite proud to have an Aussie at the top of the US charts, whether I like the song or not.

I'm not. :o :D

Destined for One Hit Wonder status

Yep. It isn't that good of a song either, but I can't see him releasing a follow up that will be even half as successful.

At least the last Aussie artist that went #1 (Savagegarden) actually had a few other hits that also hit the top 10 in the States.

Yeah hearts a mess isn't too bad.

I quite liked Somebody that you used to know when it first came out too. It just got overplayed on the radio.

I'm not a fan but I'm happy for the guy. Obviously has far more talent than 99% of artists in the US charts so it's good to see him rewarded.

Gotye has written and produced all his own music. Was independent for a long time. Is great live, and a talented musician. When I saw him live, he plays the drums and sings. Won an ARIA for something way before Somebody I Used to Know.

The whole album is well produced.

Worked on a lot of other peoples work too. I think he worked on Kimbra's last album too which is amazingly produced. Has a lot of respect in the music industry.

Kicks the crap out of Piece of Kent artists who are getting famous for doing nothing, like One Erection, Bieber, Guy She-bashed-him, Rihanna etc. They can freak off.

S***s me when people say he'll be a one hit wonder - they dont know his history cos these are the people caught up in all the commericialised crap out there.

Agree. I don't get the negativity - it is a bloody good song. And at least he is a musician unlike 90% of the other drivel in the charts.

Well said and deserves all the plaudits he is currently getting. Good to have someone with actual talent getting recognised.

Hearts a Mess, Learnalilgivinandlovin & Somebody that I used to know are among the best singles to come out of Australia in the last several years, and he is responsible for all of them, so he deserves some credit for that.

The recent success has been suprising, but if it had to be any male australian solo artist, im happy it was Gotye representing us.
