I was having a discussion with a mate the other day after Stevie Gerrard scored yet another match winning goal for Liverpool last week.

We were talking about the great 'clutch' athletes in world sport.
A few names popped up, Tiger, Jordan and Gerrard among them.

We decided that Gerrard stood apart from the rest because he has done it repeatedly from a midfield position in a game that is hard to score goals in whereas Tiger will have clutch moments tournament after tournament.

But since we are both Liverpool supporters we decided we might be slightly one eyed. So i decided to bring it up here...

Who do you think is the greatest 'clutch' athlete in world sport?

def. jordan
no question
has hit that many game winning shots in the last 10seconds of a game its a joke
would always do it in big games as well

im a liverpool fan and i still rekon jordan is number 1

Coming from a Liverpool supporter, it's got to be Jordan.

When you say 'clutch', I immediately think of basketball, so Larry Bird, Reggie Miller and Michael Jordan are the first names that spring to mind. Although Robert Horry was never on their level as a basketballer, he is also one of the great clutch performers.

From memory, Steve Waugh was THE clutch performer in the 1980s, especially with the ball. Michael Bevan was also particularly good under pressure in ODIs. Shane Warne always seemed to come up with a wicket when it was needed, too.

I don't necessarily think clutch performances are a measure of 'greatness' in individual sports, though. People like Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher and Roger Federer have often been so far ahead of their rivals that they can go entire seasons without having to dig deep in a clutch moment.

Michael Jordan. Hands down.

I remember watching him and you just knew when the game was on the line he was gonna make his shot. I've watched a hell of a lot of basketball over the years and no other player has given me that feeling before.

I think it was summed up nicely when he hit the winning shot in '98 against Utah to give the Bulls their second three peat and he posed at the free throw line. I still remember watching that game and you just KNEW that he was gonna hit that shot. No doubt about it. Kinda just summed up his career beautifully as he went out by nailing the shot that won his team another championship.
*That was before his ill fated Washington comeback. Shoulda just left it at that MJ*

Pfft the ball deflected and fell to him just outside the box. He had a clean shot under no pressure. A 9 year old would have scored from there.

Let me know when he gets England to a WC final with all his clutch shots.

I don't believe i said anything even remotely like that.

Overstretching aren't you?

The point is he has scored many clutch goals for Liverpool over his career. Why come in here saying the goal was average? It was still in the 94th minute, and it was still the last kick of the game. Clutch = Stevie G.
