I'll pull you up here.
"SuperCoach points" were not developed for fantasy footy. They are actually Champion Data ranking points and the concept goes back before SuperCoach existed, into the mid- to late-1990s. The idea behind them is that the old stats (kicks/handballs/marks) actually are meaningless, so the quality and effect of these were always record (alongside the quantity). By the turn of the century most of the clubs had hopped on board and almost ten years ago now 'effective disposals', 'contested possessions', 'hand ball gets' and so on became part of the footy language. Most of the concept came from 1970 VFL premiership hero Ted Hopkins.
You can hate fantasy footy all you want. But I reckon the Champion Data method is exceptionally sound and you and I would probably be staggered if we knew every stat they collected.
Fair point SJ. Thanks for pointing that out. I was going to ask how they differ actually, so you've pre-empted me well there.
I've got no doubt about the stats that the clubs gather these days. I recall Scott mentioning either last year or the year before how people are amazed at the flow of information going through the box during a game. Another aspect of the game the casual fan misses. It's probably another good reason why players we perceive to be not worthy of selection sometimes do all the jobs that coaches measure highly.
