I haven't felt as empty as I do right now as I did when the Socceroos went down to Iran/Uruguay...

Surely Port's 'choking' era ranges over 2001/2002/2003.

Losing certain home finals victories to Hawthorn, Collingwood and Sydney. That's surely the greatest choking effort of them all.

Although I'd have to say the South African cricket team has tried its best to top Port over the last 4 or 5 years.

Let's not forget Jana Novotna and Kim Clijsters (tennis). Both worthy nominees.

I was thinking more... proven chokers who have done it multiple times.... like Greg Norman losing championships from 8 strokes ahead..... Jane Saville being disqualified twice while in the final few hundred metres of a 10km walk....... Australia snatching defeat from the jaws of victory at the last hurdle against Iran and Uruguay.... and then our good friends Port who have gone out of their way to prove they are the true chokers of the 21st century.

What about Collingwood in the early 90's

What about it? We won a flag then we weren't able to go on with it and dominate like Hawthorn or Essendon. Carlton didn't do so well in 96 or 97 did they? Does that mean they choked? Underacheived possibly, definately didn't choke though.

I'd say the Australia national team v Iran then Uruguay 4 years later. The Socceroos had the talent to quite easily make it, especially last time around. Add to that losing the Oceania Confed Champs to New Zealand, twice.

South East Melbourne Magic during the 90's, then the Titans to a lesser extent. Seemed to make the grand final playoff every season but hardly won the championship.
Newcastle United in the English Premier League in 1995/96, clear leaders with around 15 matches left, and lost the Title to Man Utd.
Brazil in the 1998 World Cup Final.
The English soccer team never seems to win a penalty shootout, the WC semi final in 1990 is one that comes to mind.

Port Adelaide doesn't compare to some of these in global terms, but at AFL level, the fact this has happened 3 years running (losing a final at home to the underdogs), puts them right near the top.

Er... last time I checked Messrs Okon, Schwarzer, Skoko, Viduka weren't South Australian.

True, Jana did it just once, leading 5-1 in the 3rd set of a wimbledon final, but Lleyton's girl is getting close to serial proportions.....from memory, she choked in the French last year, had a semi final against Serena in the Aust Open this year in the bag, match points, lost it, played Henin in the final of the French this year, and got smashed, hardly in the contest and today, had set points against Henin in the first set before once again crumbling. I think she's got merit Juddy.

It's gotta be Port. At least the other 3 have won when it counts!!

Peter Hoare I take it?

If so, yeah, I hate that guy, but I dont the Socceroos losing to Iran on him.

And yes, my heart still aches from the Iran and Uruguay failures too.

As for the poll, Port are fast making a move for the most underachieving team of recent times.

In terms of AFL, the only other big chokes I've seen would have to be

Doggies vs Adelaide 1997 & 98 Prelim (heart still aches there too I'm afraid)
Essendon vs Carlton 1999 Prelim.
