Jonbe - if you are entitled to peddle those nonsensical statements on this forum (which you are) about a coach deliberately losing a grand final, I am entitled to express my opinion on your position and point out that it makes absolutely no sense... I would suspect the vast majority agree with me.

But you are right - you did tell me to give it a rest, and I am pleased you have committed to not doing it again.

JB Malthouse always sprouted that you should get out when you have something left in the tank. This was "his" theory and he should have subscribed to it. He had three years left on his contract as a Collingwood Man. I don't give a stuff if he was not head coach or not after 2011 that is what he subscribed to.

Whether he changed his mind is irrelevant to me. More importantly in trying to understand his psyche (Warning don't go there!) he made it about himself! That was as clear as day.

He went on the footy show and after that our season wasn't about the awesome team we had that year but about individuals ( e.g. Malthouse, Cloke Contract, Heath gambling suspension......and importantly injures)

I don't care what anyone says we should have won the premiership that year, we were that good just like
he should have tried Tarrant on Hawkins!

But as always we got sidetracked in the journey up the mountain, and someone who had been there twice before just got the job done!

P.S He left the Doggies to go to West Coast he left West Coast to go to the Pies he left the Pies to go to the Blues............He still hasn't been sacked and is about to break the all time coaching record. Which coach has never been sacked? If it is not about him then who is it about.......who is he coaching against to break the record?...........The Dogs?????

I probably should have started a thread to get my answer from you regarding the Non-Tarrant move that day in 2011.

At the end of the day I will always be thankful to him in 2010 because I lived a dream in being present for a Premiership in 2010. But as a true supporter I want more and he didn't commit to that in 2011 and that is what annoys me the most.

I don't disagree with much in your post CFC2010. There are a couple of points I could debate, but all in all it is a pretty reasonable post. I agree the interview was a mistake, I agree that not moving Tarrant was a mistake (although we don't know that would have worked either - T Hawk was just on fire)

What I do disagree with is the assertion (not from you, but from others) that MM 'deliberately' went out to lose the 2011 Grand Final out of spite for Collingwood, despite it costing him another premiership on his record (something he craves desperately). That he went into the 2011 Grand Final with the intent of not winning the game... What is your position on this?

Geelong weren't the best team in 2011 they just got lucky. Pendlebury's match winning goal was taken off him gave Geelong there first win. In the second game we were without Davis and Shaw our 2 best rebounders from defence, Maxwell our captain and best leader and third man up spoil from defence and without Thomas who IMO was having a better year Pendlebury. 3 players who were walk up starts from defence and one of our best midfielders were didn't play the second game, we were never a chance. Then in the grandfinal, Reid, Jolly and Beams were injured. Beams didn't play, Jolly and Reid did play but porly and you could tell injury took a toll on there performances.

A fully fit Collingwood side would have beaten them.

I blame that on Malthouse's poor player management earlier in the season. We pretty much played our best 22 all the way through the first half of the season and flogged every team, but in the second half of the season we debuted the likes Fasolo, Young and Sinclair and started to slow down. Those guys should have debuted in the first half of the season to establish themselves as depth and put pressure on selection and in the second we play our best 22 and get a good run. Earlier in the season we should have rested a few more players even if that meant losing to some lower teams. Tanking against Geelong in the last round was also a big mistake but in that round we were never a chance with our injuries.

Our best 22 on paper was clearly the best that year but we didn't capitalise on it.

JB I am of the opinion that his mindset/behaviour was definitely a factor in our loss. The "deliberate part" only one person can answer that and that is Malthouse himself.

Not putting in 100% of himself could be construed as "deliberately" affecting the end result. I think you could mount an argument about that. In the end he wanted to be begged to stay on as head coach and cracked the sads when that never eventuated the longer 2011 went.......that is why the Footy Show interview was an act of a desperate man.

It's sad really because he could have been a Pies Immortal.......Only got himself to blame for that I feel.

Like I said in my original post the 2011 season was the only time that I have gone to the footy and expected to win every game. Seeing that game again in the OP proves that to me.

I seem to remember guys like Simon Buckley, Cam Wood, and Brad Dick getting games earlier in the year. If we played more youngsters in the second half I suspect it's as you said it was because of the injuries we were accumulating and then having to replace Shaw for 8 weeks also.

Agree we may have been better on paper but I think the top teams had began to unravel our forward press which certainly meant we lost that aura of invincibility. I remember we even beat Brisbane by about 3 goals late in that year at the G.

Maybe we peaked too early and we also won the nab cup in 2011 so by the end of that year we had played something like 55 or 56 games of footy over 2 years. It's no wonder we lost soldiers along the way and ended the season tiring. Maybe they should have been managed better in hindsight though we did actually send 3 or 4 guys to Utah or Arizona mid season to have them ready for finals (list included Jolly, Swan and Nate Brown who injured his other knee after looking like he'd come back from a reco).

I think most would agree that Mick lost the flag (I am about 50/50 myself on that front), although we should give a little more credit to Geelong, being the team that we couldn't beat over all three attempts, not just one. Also, as pointed out above, we limped into that grand final and were lucky to be there in the end. Geelong cruised into the grand final.

What most wouldn't agree is that he deliberately set out to lose the flag out of spite. I agree all Mick cares about is Mick, but with that agreed, he would have desperately craved a premiership to increase the perception of his own success as a coach. If he is driven by ego, he would absolutely know that 'Mick Malthouse, four time premiership coach' is better than 'Mick Malthouse, three time premiership coach'
