And a Fosters at that!
Us folks from the colonies have much in common my friend! You should have seen us during the World Junior Hockey Championships this year. They were held in Russia, and most of the games started at around 5:30am our time. So my friends would usually just crash at my place for the night, we're wake up around 5, and make a quick breakfest, and crack our first beers for the drop of the puck at 5:30, haha.

Heads up mate. Nobody drinks Fosters over here.

We do stay up all night watching England v Australia at 3.30 in the morning though.

Haha so i've been told. My buddies wive lived in Sydney for a couple of years before they met and she was saying Fosters in Australia is the same as Molson Canadian in Canada. It's the most popular beer internationally, but nobody in the home country drinks the stuff.

Well that game started off promising at least. Not exactly the way i wanted the last WCE game i'll get to see this season to go, but those are the ropes sometimes. I'll be heading out tomorrow morning for 2 months, but i'll be sure to check in during the off season when I get back. Take care folks, and Go Eagles!

All the best. Talk to you on the other side

You should come down and see our small but vibrant hockey community during the season. With your team of high flying young forwards and......suspect defence, I am sure you will have lots to contribute.

So a little about myself first: I'm 28. I'm from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm in the Canadian Navy. I'm a huge sports fans. I have a wonderful girlfriend, and together we have 3 cats and 1 dog. Anyway enough about that boring crap, onto what really matters!

I've just started getting into Aussie Rules Football(Or Footy, as i'll call it from now on) in the last 2 months or so. It started on one particularly slow Saturday afternoon. I was having a few beer and flicking through the channels looking for something to watch and on TSN2 I seen "Australian Rules Football". So I decided to check it out, and i've been hooked ever since!
As you can imagine, living in Canada, it's fairly hard to keep track of everything that's going on. TSN2 generally broadcast's 1 or 2 games a week, but aside from that i'm left to simply read the post game reports. As for my favorite team I currently have it listed as Adelaide, but that's because i'm required to pick a team in order to register. I'm still up in the air between Adelaide and West Coast as for whom i'm going to root for. I would greatly welcome any input from supporters of either team in order to make up my mind.

Anywho, i'm only going to be home for about 3 weeks or so, then i'm going to be out to sea for about 2 months, but in the meantime i'm going to try to be as active a poster here on this forum as I can, although at this point most of my activity will likely consist of reading and absorbing the information of fans far more informed than myself.

Welcome to AFL. Great to have another Canadian like Ogopogo. Stay close to Big Footy and you will learn a lot about our great game.

Also, have you thought about supporting the Hawthorn Hawks. A great history with some huge rivalries. One of the favourites to take out the grand final along with Fremantle, Sydney and Geelong. Have a look at the video below of Lance "Buddy" Franklin. One of our current players who is a freak of nature. 196cm tall and can move like a small midfielder. Hope this tantalises your taste buds.

Oh i've seen the exploits of Buddy Franklin and while i am a fan of him as a player, i don't really care either way for his team. My big reluctancle to pick a Victorian team is that i have no history in Victoria, nor does my family, thus i do not want to pick a team with a long and storied history like most Victorian teams. I am a new fan to this beautiful game, and thus i feel i should support a newer team, such as West Coast! Go Eagles!

Hey Willy, fellow Canadian here. Ever thought about trying to play the sport? I think there's a team team in Halifax that just started a year or so ago. Check them out if you're interested, think they're called the Halifax Dockers. Shit name haha.

Go Carlton!!

Well, that season was pants, but the next one will be better! ... it better improve, anyway...

But still, good choice!

I know you've probably made your decision already, but here's some vision of Adelaides best player: Patrick 'Raging Bull' Dangerfield.

He's young, powerful, fast and tough as they come. And with a name like Dangerfield he's gotta be good!!

Willy, definitely get involved with the Halifax Dockers even if you don't wish to play as footy clubs tend to be more social than other North American sports. I imagine they'll be throwing a Grand Final party this weekend, ball up at 11PM Atlantic time this Friday!

I grew up in Cape Breton and played footy for three years in Toronto (with Keno) before moving to Melbourne two years ago so I've joined a local suburban amateur league here. Have met plenty of people that will be friends for life. Geez we know how to down a stubbie.

I married a Newfie, therefore I am awesome.
Go Bombers!

Unfortunately I just got back from sea and a 2 month sail yesterday and this is my first chance to check the board since I got back, otherwise I would have made plans to check that out. I was very excited though when I found out that I was going to be back in time to see the Grand Final. In fact the game starts in about 20 minutes and I have a couple of bottles of wine to get me through the game so I should be good to go.
As for the local team, I have heard about that via twitter and i've been considering looking into it. The thing about that though is that when it comes to kicking, i'm absolutely dreadful. I'm a very good baseball and football player cause I have a great arm, but I can't kick anything to save my life, so I doubt I would be of much use outside of catching the marks!

Dammit, so I just checked the Dockers account on Twitter and apparently they are all going to Bubba Ray's(A local sports bar) to watch the game tonight. Had I known this earlier I probably would have went. Don't know how well that would have went over though, seeing as i'm assuming they are mostly Fremantle fans and i'm a West Coast fan who is obviously going for Hawthorn tonight, haha.

I know some mates who went to Freo in eagles colours.

And Freo was stacked full of like 20-30,000 people with all the cops from the state brought in.

So have you decided upon your team yet? Because, as any fan will tell you, you only get one chance to choose a team. You're not allowed to cheat on your partner or your team...

Maybe choose the closest team to Halifax? Brisbane is the merger of a foundation and an expansion club, with a solid recent history (only 16,274 km from Halifax). Then there is Sydney, only 16, 838 km from Halifax. Whereas West Coast (Perth) is over 18,621 km from Halifax.

Yes i've decided on my team, and i'm quite happy with my choice!
Geography is something that comes into play when we're talking about teams a little closer to home. I'm a big Boston sports fan when it comes to all North American sports. One reason being I have lots of family from in and around Boston, and i've been to Boston many times. Also, Boston is the closest city with a major team in every professional sport.
When it comes to the AFL though, Geography is much less of a factor. Brisbane and Sydney are both closer to Halifax, you're correct, but they're still literally half way around the world away. How much does 2000km mean when we're talking about a difference of over 16,000km anyway. The answer is very little my friend!
