I thought that this was the most telling bit:
Griffin said his close relationship with Craig had made his two-month stint in the SANFL easier to accept.

“Craigy just kept reassuring me that my playing and my training form were really good and that I wasn’t too far away from getting a game,” Griffin said.

Puts the lie to the rubbish spouted by some members of the tin foil hat brigade here on BF that Craig only has a good relationship with the veterans and is largely resented by those youngsters considered to be outside the best 22.

Anyone else see Griff rev up the Porpus afer his mark (in which he slammed the ball down after).

He really got to him and was fired up.

That entire article is fantastic; both for the insight into Craig's relationship with Griff, Griff having the courage to take a good look in the mirror and admit that he was letting himself down and his subsequent reversed attitude and desire to make it.

Good on him.

MacJoe - Fair point; and reviewing that game now would definitely be interesting, but at the time, it wasn't the fact he was beaten that annoyed a few of us, it was the fact that he looked like he was beaten by quarter time, dropped his head and didn't try and fight his way back into the game.

Frustration from many here about not playing younger guys more, or making bad calls at end of last season re: our veterans, does not instantly correlate to saying Craigy doesn't have a good relationship with our younger group.

Thats a silly comment to make.

He can have a great relationship with the kids but still be a conservative, slow to promote talent coach.

He can have a great relationship with the entire playing group and still not get the best out of them.

I'm not saying he isn't getting the best out of them btw. So often people's legitimate points of debate and concern for our footy departments decisions over the last 6 to 9 months get twisted, or grouped, into comments that are not being made by the majority.

His performance against Sandilands in R11 was superior in every way to his insipid performance in R1. If he'd played as well in R1 as he did in R11, he would never have been dropped.

Full credit to Griffin for the way he's turned things around this season. He's beginning to look like an AFL footballer again - which means we might have to revise all our delisting/trading plans for the end of the season. :thumbsu:;)

That comment was made in relation to specific statements/claims made by certain members of BigFooty this year. I'm sure the guilty parties know who they are.
 
Anyone remember that NAB cup game in either 07 or 08 where Griff kicked 2 goals in a half against Port and we were so desparate for a KPF that we all fapped?

Good times.

Not impressed today so far. Being outmarked by players half his size, or ruckmen like Skipper who have only hit 50 games from 10 years on AFL lists
 
Hopefully he is gone at the end of the year because i dont rate him as an AFL footballer at all. He is a very good SANFL footballer but he doesnt have the intensity,mobility or hardness to be an AFL footballer. His effort today along with Maric was pathetic and it just shows we desperately need to recruit an experienced ruckman like Sydney has done in the past few years.


I am all for playing two ruckman but Griffin is not the answer. I would rather see SMACK ruck even though his form hasnt been fantastic in the SANFL.

They are both highly susceptible to changes in the upstairs department (ie mentally fragile).

Either switched on or off...not often much in between.
 
I thought Griff was the better of our two rucks today. Although that's kinda like being the tallest dwarf.

At least Griff got his hand to the ball first, Maric couldn't even do that.

Fair assessment. Both were poor. Griffin was less poor.

Maric remains 1R for now though as there is a higher chance that the decent Maric may show instead of hack Maric, whereas the odds on decent Griff versus hack Griff are a little less.
 
I have been somewhat amazed by all the love for Maric this season - some of his efforts can be really soft. At a centre bounce today he had both arms around Burgoyne as he got the ball. Burgoyne simply ran out of his arms!

On a day when our rucks were expected to give us an edge, they were horrible overall. One brief glimpse of hope in the third quarter when we were going OK for a while, I thought Grif gave us a bit - but invisible again in last quarter

Agree on both counts. Maric has had some great, even inspiring, games this season but people don't seem to be able to see past the 'fiery croat' mythology to dispassionately analyse the situations you correctly spoke of above. That was a soft effort (not Robinson Crusoe btw), no doubt because his mental state deteriorated over the match as he was getting beaten. If you look up 'confidence player' in the dictionary, you'll find Maric...and his confidence relies on a fired up start to a contest. It's no surprise he didn't play well when he came into the match as the fancied ruck over his opponent. Needs to be 'gee'd up' by coaching staff and see a sports psych regularly (in fact we could hire one full time to look after Maric, Moran and Griffin).

Also agree re Griffin's 3rd quarter...had an excellent patch which made a difference at ground level. Unfortunately couldn't sustain it.

And yet somehow we managed to win the hitouts 51-43. The fact is that they got their hands to the ball just fine. What they did with the ball is another matter, as is the inability of their teammates to win a contested ball to save their lives... But why ruin a good crucifiction with ;)a few facts.

I am not sure if there were any stats today about how many of those hitouts were to advantage?

I am more concerned about their lack of impact/influence/input around the ground.
