Simon Goodwin and Brett Burton have returned to Adelaide’s line-up for Saturday night’s crunch game against Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium.
Goodwin strained a knee early in the round 11 game against Geelong while Burton has not played since round eight and had been struggling before that after hurting a knee in the opening round.
Young ruckman Ivan Maric will play his first AFL game for the season. Maric, who had hip surgery in March, has found good form in the SANFL. He replaces Jonathon Griffin.
Nathan Bassett (ankle) will be missing for at least eight weeks while Martin Mattner was left out of the 22 and named as an emergency with Nick Gill and Richard Douglas.
Scott Thompson will play his 100th AFL game. He played 39 games for Melbourne before joining the Crows.
The team is:
B: Graham Johncock, Ben Rutten, Scott Stevens
HB: Andrew McLeod, Ken McGregor, Jason Torney
C: Kris Massie, Simon Goodwin, Nathan van Berlo
HF: Mark Ricciuto, Nathan Bock, Brent Reilly
F: Chris Knights, Scott Welsh, Brett Burton
R: Ben Hudson, Tyson Edwards, Scott Thompson
IC: Michael Doughty, Robert Shirley, Ivan Maric, Jason Porplyzia.
Emerg: Nick Gill, Richard Douglas, Martin Mattner

In: Burton, Goodwin, Maric
Out: Bassett (ankle), Griffin, Mattner

WTF:confused:

Noooooooo not Griffin!

I can see where the club is coming from though, but still.

And Mattner dropped? Didn't see that one coming at all.

In the context of the year the only surprise about Griffin was the AFC waiting after the break. He has been battered and bruised and will appreciate the rest ( assumption he is not playing for Centrals)

Mattner, surprised but not stunned.

Lets go Crows and make it happen

Interesting move. Maybe trying to upgrade Marics' trade value come seasons end? Griffen certainly looked the goods and worth pumping game time into.

No Sellar? Disappointing.

Griffin needed a rest. You can't expect his skinny frame to hold up for a full season. Maric deserves a game. Good Call :thumbsu:

Mattner - Can't say I disagree with this either. It's been coming for a while.

Douglas - Really dissappointed he's not included, pretty tough when you kick a bad of 7, playing from mainly midfield and can't get the callup. Ah well, we'll need all hands on deck Sunday anyway. 10 this week Rich :thumbsu:. Should've got a game before Doughty IMO.

I think a rest for Griff will be good and we really need to give Maric a chance to impress. We also want to keep him and need to find him opportunities

Craig obviously doesn't want to sue Mattner on a wing and realies he was poor in defence.

Douglas unlucky not to force his way in.

OMG – where is James Sellar?:eek:

Marty Mattner and Jonathon Griffin are both unlucky but a change has to be made. Wrong scapegoat but.

Good to see Ivan Maric get an opportunity:thumbsu:

Agreed, and we’re not going to move forward if we play Doughty before a 1st round pick who just collected 30 possessions and booted 7 goals.

At least Doughty is named on the bench.

And I don't disagree with the decision to rest Griffin. And it's about time Mattner is dropped; but what's the bet either Goodwin or Burton don't come up and he's back in? I don't care as long as he's put on the wing.

I have a feeling Goody wont play and young douggie will come in for him.

Griffin was ALWAYS going to be omitted at some stage of this year. There is no way he would have played every game this year. I said even at the start of the year that Griffin will go back to SANFL as soon as Maric is fit to play in AFL.

Griffin has been a great find for us no doubt but Maric is much more AFL ready at this stage and is a good inclusion IMHO.

Mattner out is a surprise, especially since Bassett is also out. We are going to be REALLY short this week.

Good to see Burton, Goodwin and Maric back :thumbsu:

I have a feeling Nick Gill may get a gig...if one of Burton/Goodwin don't come up.

He is an X factor type player, so by not naming him, Hawthorn may not have done as much research, then when he does play he could be a weapon.

We have a VERY short forward line.

What? No more GRIFF! GRIFF! GRIFF! GRIFF! GRIFF! chants?

Ivan! Ivan! Ivan! doesnt have the same ring to it.

Well seeing as the correct pronounciation of his name is E-varn some nice long chants ala the van berlo one will work out quite nice.

A little surprised to see Mattner dropped but his performance has been down. I think it means that Massie heads back to the back lines and plays the loose man that Torney has been doing. Torney will take the '3rd' tall option that Bass normally has.

Had a two week break not long ago. I can understand being rested the week before or week after for a nice 3 week break but two weeks after the break seems odd. Will he be playing in the SANFL now or does the club he play for have a bye?

If he is playing in the SANFL it is not to have a rest.

Suprised with Mattner being dropped, hasnt been brillaint, but lets face it he shouldnt be in defence, get him on the wing.

Griff being dropped is no suprise.

Gill to come in soon hopefully, Dougie unlucky.

I think Massie will get the job on Hodge, as he has played forward a lot this year.

Kenny Mac moved back by that team. I would prefer Bock to go back and Kenny to stay forward.

Congrats to Ivan getting another crack at the big time. IMO I wasn't that shocked to hear that Griff had been dropped. Back to SANFL and get some decent game time into him.

Mattner dropped was the one out of left field. I would have preferred him to be moved up the ground to the wing to see if he could gain some confidence back again.

The only response to that is that maybe the AFC felt Maric ( his replacement) wasnt quite ready.

If he is playing in the SANFL it is not to have a rest.

Both the AFC and PAFC have been resting players from SANFL duties in recognition of the long season, so I would assume that will be the case here with Griffin
