I personally think that Sandi at 60% is better than Griffin at 100% What he dished up today was pretty horrible and it was against an average, young and inexperienced ruck man.

Can't wait to 211 back out there again! :thumbsu:

How do you think he is going?

Is there room for Sandi, Clarke and Griff?

Of course not, that's why Griffin only plays when Sandi doesn't. That's his entire role in the squad.

I'm confused by the criticism he's copping today since he played considerably better than last week in my view.

12 disposals and 31 hit outs. What do people expect from our reserve ruckman? Would you rather Kep out there?

I think I jumped the gun with this thread.

The midfield was atrocious today and probably undid some of the great tap work by Griff.

Still maintain my thought that 60% 211 > 100% Griff.

He did his job. Must be hard to stay motivated if you are a back up to 211.

I thought he was serviceable. But he is not the guy you want leading your ruck. Pretty much zero X-factor. He competes, and got the 31 hit-outs, statistically smashing the opposition, but his overall impact was minimal.

But it is good to get some games into him to build a bit of report with the midfield.

What the stats don't say about Griffin is how many times he got caught off his direct opponent Smith/Dixon and let them get easy uncontested marks.

Griffin is slow. He would work in a wet stoppage game, but the spread of Gold coast was to much for him. He looked underdone last week with running with a slight limp and the only reason we have to play him is protecting the Giant 211.

Good points, but I daresay that Smith/Dixon would also out work Sandilands. The only one we have to keep up with them would be Clarke/Bradley. The difference is that they would be conscious of staying with Sandilands versus they paid Griffin no heed and just tried to get clear of him.

Without hesitation, Kepler and Clarke is a much more flexible duo and Griffin has been dead weight this year.

Serious? Kep is versatile but he is a rubbish ruckman. Hopefully all this is moot as of next week when Sandilands is back. Our midfield lifts about 3 classes with him in

Looks to be playing injured, heavily strapped knee which took a knock in the 3rd term. Don't forget he came off in the WAFL game with a leg injury before being called up for the Friday game last week.

Doesn't look at 100%. Will definitely make way for Sandilands next week. Clarke in superior form at the moment, nice to have our first choice rucking duo available soon.

Hopefully Hill can get over the cork as well. Port have been playing pretty well.

I love the debate about our ruck and clearances/midfield. My thoughts are similar to dom's.

Griffin got the dominant numbers regarding hitouts and we lost the clearances. Not disimilar to Sandi. But Sandilands can dominate a game and become pivotal in our structure. Griffin.... i don't think so.

Keplar is so much more mobile, almost another midfielder, and can play forward. We lose the hitouts, but doubt if the clearance numbers would change for the worse. Plus he has some other strings to his bow.

But for now I am happy to keep throwing Griffin up. Keep Sandi for later in the season, and keep learning about what we can get from Griffin who is not playing at his best.

I agree. I think he is playing with a leg injury. makes his performances over the past two weeks more meritorious.

Yep said it earlier.
Last year Griffin was playing like a player desperate to show his ability and earn a spot in team.
This year he now knows there is no chance that he will ever be in the same team as Sandilands, so no matter how well he plays, he only gets games when Sandilands is out.

Pretty hard to stay motivated and give 100% when you know it wont make a difference.

Could be effected by injury but i think he is just going through the motions.

Keps is no good as a main ruckman, if we are playing him because he is ok around the ground, might aswell just play a midfielder as ruckman instead.
Will be even better around the ground.

Sandilands is first choice main ruckman
Griffin is 2nd choice main ruckman
Clarke is 1st choice backup ruckman
Keps is 2nd choice backup ruckman

Neither Clarke or Keps are good enough to be main ruckman yet so will always be backup options.
Griffin doesnt add much around the ground so will always only be main ruckman or out, never backup.

Sounds like Griff's playing like he know's he'll be 2nd/3rd best on this list forever and he wants out. It also sounds like he's playing like he wants out.

Clubs won't chase him as #1 ruck, especially when someone like Warnock may be available.

And seriously if a player can't keep motivated in a team;
- with 1 ruckman (Sandilands) ahead of him
- and that ruckman has shown himself to be injury prone
- and the team has a new coach who has a history of using multiple ruckmen on gameday

.... and where he is already in the team in round 5 ... then he deserves out.

I just think he is playing below full fitness due to an injury.

I also believe this, however if Griffin himself was of the impression he was going to play 22 games next to Sandi last year, don't discount that he again believes he could play 22 games for someone else next year.

sigh.... this has always been my point....... I truly understand the need for a backup ruckman.... and griff is great as that.... but he will not be in our colours next year..... and we will get nothing for him now, last year we would have picked up a pick in the early 30's or possibly even 20's..... that could have been kersten!..... anyway, its over now...... we messed up, hopefully we dont make the same mistake at the end of this year

I still don't see how it's a mistake to have a capable back up ruckman on the list. There's every chance we would have lost on the weekend if we'd been dominated in the ruck.

If he's happy to stay at the end of the year I hope we do make that same 'mistake' again. And I thought your whole complaint was he would ask for a trade so why would it be a mistake if he stays?

You sound a bit like a Melbourne supporter with your obsession with draft picks.

that is my point, he will ask for a trade or go in the draft and we will get nothing for him.... its great for this year having a good backup ruckman, but we arent winning the flag this year, and he wont be around next year...... if he stays your right, it wont be a mistake... but he wont stay in my opinion

i guess im sounding obsessed about picks because i believe we have a serious dearth in talent in our midfield and in our forwardline. we really could have used an extra top 30 pick.... i know there is no garauntee or indication that we would have taken kersten... but he kicked 6 in the VFL last week... when was the last time we had a player in the wafl kick a bag??? probably ryan murphy.....
