Always found this to be an interesting topic, yet one that the general public seem to be largely unaware of or naive of.
In recent years there have been stories concerning numerous players (AFL, NRL etc) that have had flings with starstruck fans, only to be greeted with shock from the general public and media.
Such shock just absolutely dumbfounds me.
It is well known that throughout history, men with money, fame, power or all of the above, especially in the sports and entertainment industry, have numerous women desiring to sex them whenever they make a public (and even private) appearance.
However, there are so many people in the general public that just refuse to believe this, and my question is, why? It seems to stem largely from the 'older' population, those that are more out of touch with the younger generation of today, despite the groupie culture existing for many decades prior. You can bet your bottom dollar that the male stars of the 50's, 60's and 70's partook in this on a very regular basis. Perhaps the awareness of it was largely non-existent back in the day, owing to a significantly lower degree of media exposure.
You'll hear a story of some star footballer, rugby player, golf star, doing a 'wham back thank you mam', followed by the female later running to the media (often crying foul), and the general public and media subsequently berating him for participating in the consensual act. Why?
The groupie culture is rife, and I (as I'm sure my fellow 20 somethings that aren't living under a rock) have witnessed groupies on the prowl like a moth to a flame, and it happens in every city of every country during every weekend around the world, and it would be safe money to bet that you're favourite "role model" (and whether or not a sports star should be a role model is for another thread) sleeps with groupies and cheats on his partner on the regular. To deny this would be incredibly, incredibly naive.
I say with absolute confidence that all our teams have players that hook up with groupies on the regular - every weekend after every game. I would bet the same amount of money that all our teams have players that cheat on their partners too, and many of these partners would be well aware of it and understand that it comes with the territory of dating a sports star. We've got the world cup going on right now - you'd be a fool to deny that every team's hotel lobby has swarms of females begging for the one encounter with a soccer star.
For anyone interested, a lot of what is written in this article about the NBA can be applied to the AFL and NRL in Australia:
