Grundy

ok, firstly id like to congratulate the lads on a great win, the emotions of 2005 are starting to creep back! The juniors came out firing!

However, I just cant help but comment on some of the silly free kicks and poor marking contests Grundy gave away against Hawkins, and it was pretty obvious this week.
Even the commentators on SEN were highlighting these critical turnovers

what do we do to fix this?

You can't fix it. Maybe bring LRT in to play on the monsters. Players have good and bad games. For every game today (he wasn't even that bad imo) he has his games like the one against Petrie.

Gave away the one seriously silly free (that attempted speccie which was just ridiculous), but other than that he was solid. He gave away two frees in a row at one point, but better give the free and spoil the contest than let them mark it and move it quickly. You can't expect him to win every contest, but a free is better than a mark.

He wasn't fantastic, but he was solid. Play on.

Grundy is a good player. He made a few errors today but consider the opposition and the quality of his opponent. Gotta keep him around.

In the first two quarters glaring errors were present. 2 free kicks because he couldnt handle the pressure of the opposition, one against ottens that should have been converted, and another against ??, that lead to a ?stokes goal. He also had a couple of terrible ineffective kicks one in the first quarter that went straight to the opposition.

However I thought he did a better job later in the game esp. against hawkins however, i think hawkins is a complete spud anyway so not sure if he can claim that as a big scalp.

Geez some can be a bit harsh, we just beat Geelong at Geelong remind me again how many goals did Pods or Hawkins or Ottens kick?

Both Grundy and Ted played 100% game time and Geelong only managed 6 marks inside 50 from 58 inside 50's, pretty impressive.

I knew this was going to be brought up. That kick was aimed squarely at Brett Meredith who was near the boundary just outside 50 and a step in front of two geelong players. by the time the ball got there. they had taken several steps forward. Meredith watched on.

The free kick he gave away for a push way to early was poor but again he played a role for the team.

It's unbelievable that geelong took their least amount of marks inside 50 at this ground since 2004 yet our defenders are the ones still getting the roast.

Reg is almost guaranteed a few clangers per game. This is just not good enough for a defender.

My only criticisms on Grundy are based my assumption that he would develop into a great player. It's hardly his fault if he doesn't fulfil those expectations.

He's a decent defender and definitely worthy of our 22. I have him behind both Richards and a fit LRT in the pecking order though.

As bad as it sounds, I think LRT's career may almost be over. Can't seem to get over this soft tissue injuries that he is now constantly getting, and because he hasn't played in defence for most of the past two seasons, he will really struggle to regain his form back there. I remember maybe 2007 or 2008 when he spent the previous year out injured, he came back and really struggled. Grundy is now becoming more important than ever to the team.

I don't think anyone on this forum is crucifying Reg, just highlighting his deficiencies.

At the end of the day, I want to see the swans hunting for another flag, this isnt going to happen when your key defender is costing you goals at critical stages of the game. Quality opposition will put you away in an instant.

Sorry guys, at the end of the day, its a game of perfection. Good foot skills and accuracy wins you games. We work so hard to earn our goals, we cant give up goals that easily.

I dont care if Reg turns over the ball outside 50, just dont turn it over 15 meters from goal.

I know its easier to bag defenders, as forwards always take all the glory.

Im hoping he follows Teddy's lead, and improves with time. I used to sh#$ myself when Teddy had the ball in his hands (going back 2 seasons), now Im seeing a lot more confidence in his game.

BombayPolice just posted on our board that he had heard a rumor that Carlton were offering 1st and 2nd round picks for Grundy. I think that's overpaying, but that's just me.

What is his contract situation? Thoughts?

Thanks

Would certainly surprise me if that was the case. I doubt it has any substance at all really.

Yeah, he came back in 2008 after missing 2007 with his foot, and was completely shithouse. Rebounded in 2009 with his best year of his career, though.

I don't think he's a natural footballer, so I do think he takes a bit of time to get back into the swing of things.

Ideally, I'd like him in defence for the final alongside Reg and Ted, but I don't know how great he'll be if his first game back is an elimination final.
