Two guards have been killed with others seriously injured in an attack on a prison van carrying a high security inmate from the courthouse in Rouen.

France's gun laws are considered to be strict with very few able to get licenses while these men were heavily armed with automatic weapons.

The van had slowed at the toll booth where it was rammed by a black car that drove straight towards it. Then the men, hooded and dressed in black, moved towards the van, shooting at close-range.

The prisoner Mohamed Amra escaped with the gunmen. Amra had been convicted of aggravated robbery and charged in a case of abduction leading to death

The interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, wrote on X that he had ordered the activation of France’s Epervier plan, a special operation launched by the gendarmerie in such situations. “All means are being used to find these criminals. On my instructions, several hundred police officers and gendarmes were mobilised,” he said.

This is big imo with the Prime Minister stating the attack had targeted the French republic and the justice system.

They had military assault rifles, the guards with not much chance only had hand guns.

"A very worrying stage was reached, with a full-scale attack with almost an assault column, weapons of war and no chance given to the prison officers," said Gregory Joron, general secretary of the UN1TE police union.
