Im not having a go at hammo , but he seems unable to mark ? anyone know why seing he came from a basketball background ... and you almost have to make sure you dont drop the ball in that sport. once again no criticism. just an observation and i cant get my head around the fact he cannot mark the ball uncontested?

I"m pretty sure Hampson came from a striker's background. You know, the one or two people who play up forward in soccer, attacking, scoring goals, beating defence with their speed ;) Oh the love for the tall, fast ruckmen :)

I initially thought he would have had a goalie background given his height. Marking can be worked on. How's he looking these days in terms of improvement?

My bad as i thought he came from a basketball background , no real improvement in my eyes , only good game from hampson has been the practice match against freo earlier this year.....

He still cannot take a mark and this issue surely needs to be adressed ? he claps hes hands when going for a mark!

He does not do anything else bar contest in the ruck ? so surely he can just hang onto one mark for the team.

at the end of the day there will be people coming out saying hes raw and blah blah blah .... but droping uncontested marks seriosly?? he would not make a goalies arseh*le......

I haven't seen him this year so i can't comment. I guess we all know the cliche of "Big guys take a lot longer to develop, so give him time." I think the experience can only be a good thing for him. Cloke seemed to like him and Kreuzer in the ruck, so he (Clokey) could go forward.

I think Hampson has a good leap, good speed, obviuosly must have good foot skills from his soccer background. How old is he anyway now, 20? Still a kid. Give him time, i'm sure he'll get his hands around the leather sooner or later :)

Just responding to that sentence...... like i said im not criticizing hammo he did come from another sport, and that would be hard... but marking a footy he possibly could not make it look any harder.

im not saying he wont develop i think your missing the point.

He had serious trouble last night with his hands, marking, around the ground, he fumbled every ground ball he went for, but I liked the look of his first centre bounce last night. He timed his jump and easily got first hands to the ball.

I don't think his confidence would be all that high after playing pretty much the entire year with the Ants after Carlton were getting smashed in the ruck each week, so now he's finally back in the side, staking a claim for the ruck position but he's started slowly, he just needs a heap of games together without going out of the side, it's not helping his development.

He was hardly worth having in the team last night. Only had 2 possessions, 6 hitouts. Kreuzer is pretty far ahead of him right now.

He's raw. He was always going to take time.

Seriously how much time do you need , to learn how to take a simple uncontested mark ? ... im not asking him to win the ruck everytime then move forward and take screamers like cloakey , ovcoarse he is going to take time.

.... just a simple uncontested mark... its baby stuff.

He'll be fine, just needs time. He's still very much a project player, he's very raw and from what I've seen I'm confident he'll develop nicely in time. Should have a big pre-season an they'll work on his weaknesses such as marking.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing Jacobs getting a game some day. I don't watch the VFL, but from what I've heard it sounds like he's starting to impress. The fact he's 200cm and 100kg isn't too bad either.

Hampson will come good in time. He has just played over a handful of games .
He switched over from a soccer background 4 years ago. He's going pretty well for someone who's switched from soccer.
Hampson's still learning and needs time to develop.
Last night he crossed off the Tackle box. He laid his first tackle.. without pushing someone in the back like the Port game.
He's good at chasing, still needs to master the run down,
his marking does need to improve.
He has marked the ball before, he's not stupid.
I think we need to cut him some slack.
Shaun Hampson needs time. Give him another pre-season under his belt. and he'll come good.

Cast your mind back to Fev, circa 2001/2002. He could not take a mark to save his life. He constantly allowed the ball to hit the palms of his hands, subsequently bouncing off & falling free. As with Fev back then, there are two things that need to be worked on for Hampson, technique & strength. If coached well he will get the technique right & if he does the hard yards during the pre-season he will build his strength. In 2-3 years time supporters will be marvelling at his marking ability.

Oh what rubbish. Yes, he dropped a few easy marks last night, but his ruckwork and movement around the ground is improving every week along with his off the ball work too.

Anyone who expects brilliance from a raw young ruckman is dreaming. Look at McIntosh from North, he didn't really start to come of age til last year... And I'm sure his background was footy, not soccer.

Just have some patience, ffs, the kid's leap almost puts him into orbit! If anything, our future rucks is what we should be most excited about!

Shit thread.

Hampson is as raw as they come, needs time and development - pretty straight forward.

I only saw him drop one mark last night so wow hang the bloke :thumbsd:

He's probably in the top 3 fastest players at the club over 20m, his athleticism and leap is freakish. Needs to get comfortable at AFL level - is that too much to ask?

McIntosh was drafted in 2002 and only cracked into the senior team in 2007. Hampson will probably take something similar.

Patience.

I don't think Hampson is ready for AFL just yet. I really thought that he was a development project. But I've been proven wrong with the Hammer getting a few games this season. Hasn't shown much, but hopefully he'll be a good player in the near future.
