Is there a rule against handballing to yourself when running instead of bouncing the ball?

I am just wondering, because say it is a wet day and the ground is too sloppy to bounce, and you dont want to slow down your speed when running by touching it on the ground, can you just pop a handball out in front of yourself and catch it and continue running without being pulled up?

I ain't no umpire but I think you're allowed to do that.
However you are still judged to be in possession if you handball it to yourself. So it doesn't break up the run like a bounce.

They bought in a rule that actually banned it outright once, I don't know what happened to that. I'll try reading the laws of the game just to make sure.

EDIT: Here it is

15.2.2 Remaining in Possession and Bouncing the Football
(a) A Player may remain in possession of the football for any
length of time:
(i) unless the Player is Correctly Tackled by an opponent; or
(ii) unless directed to dispose of the football by a field
Umpire; or
(iii) provided the Player complies with Law 15.2.2 (b).
(b) Where a Player is moving whilst in possession of the football,
he or she must bounce or touch the football on the ground
at least once every 15 metres, irrespective of whether such
Player is running in a straight line or otherwise. For the
purposes of this Law, a Player shall be deemed to be in
possession of the football during the period when the Player
handballs the football to himself or herself and regains
possession without the football touching the ground.

(c) A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player if he
or she is of the opinion that a Player has contravened Law
15.2.2 (b).

If you were allowed to do that, noone would bounce the ball.

thanks for that. like i said, i was just curious as ive never heard any rule against it, but reading that, there is a law against it. It wasnt like i was going to go out on the field and do it, but was just curious what the rule was.

Thanks again

So by that rule its ok to do it as long as it touches the ground, then you are not in posession of the ball and/or it counts as a bounce at the same time.

It would count as a handball not a bounce. I'm not sure what statisticians do to those sort of handballs. Leon Davis handballs into space so he can collect it himself a lot especially near the boundary line.

So if a guy handballs it high into the air, it travels 15 metres, with enough hangtime for the player to regain possession on the full, it is then running too far? I know, it would have to be a pretty powerful handpass to work, but I'm sure some of the best exponents of the handball would be able to pull it off (James Hird springs to mind).

If a handball was that high up it would be easy to intercept but if that happened I'm pretty sure it should be a free kick. I don't know if you have to intentionally do it or not.

if the rule was being inforced properly, then no, you arent allowed to. the ball is meant to touch the group every 15 meters if the player is maintaining posession, unless it has been kicked. If you handballed allong the ground, that is ok, but handballing in the air (such as over a player) to yourself is technically an infringement

Most umpires though have enough common sense to let it go, infact, i wouldnt be surprised if most umpires dont know the rule, lol
