I'm a Roos fan who has barely missed a game in the last 20 years. So in reference to this weekend's Rivalry Round......

Have we EVER had a rivalry with you guys????

I don't know Marstermind. I mean Carey left the Roos after partying too hard with Stevo's missus following a practice game against us. ;)

Then there was Laidely's comments last year about talent alone.

And let's not forget Blighty. Came to us in a round about way but he was one of yours.... :D

Rumour has it it was the 1998 Ansett Cup Final which was the catalyst ;)

Aside from my hilarious jokes, this issue was brought up on SEN tonight as well, with callers trying to find what it could've come from.. I'm still stumped

Of course, Laidley's comments turned out to be right because when I looked it up I found that St.Kilda didn't win the flag last year. Probably should have minded his own business but in the end it was a good call.

Let's celebrate our "rivalry" by doing this on Saturday:

Between us we account for 39 of the League's 108 wooden spoons. They should unfurl them by dangling them from the roof of the Dome before the game.

A motorcade with Kristian Bardsley, Joe McLaren, Matthew Capuano, Jim Krakouer, Brian Wilson, Mark Arceri, Jon Collins and yes, even Smilin' Grant T, before the game. (It's been a while since a trade has come off between us!!)

Highlights of famous Roos/Saints moments on the score board (1997 Prelim Final, 1998 Ansett Cup Final and ummmmm.....ohhhh......oooooo.....yeah....)

A commemorative cup presented at the end of the game to either Adam Simpson or whoever wins the lucky dip. It could be the Eicke Cup or the Foote Cup, but I like the Jason Traianidis Cup.

Either all of this or our supporter and your supporters could just have a punch-up in the Sirens night club at the end of the game. I'm easy either way.

Well I'm off to put on my best 'snarly' face just in case I bump into any of our long hated Saints enemies today.

Cheers!

It is quite simply a case of 7 rivalries and two teams left over.

Apart from the 97 prelim I can't remember a big stakes game between the two teams and I can't remember anything that would point to a long rivalry against the roos.

That said I don't know too many rivalries that we do have, very recently maybe the Lions and Port after last years prelim but we don't exactly have too many rivalries.

geelong a bit now.

On a more serious note, the only reason I can see for putting us together as a rivalry is because of the clash with North on May 27, 1933 at the Junction Oval. We finished up winning the game by 14 pts but we had gone into 1/2 time up by a goal but 2 men short due to injury. By the end of the game we had 15 players on the field, 2 of them badly injured.

This game is feted as the reason the St. Kilda shield emblem was designed.

It's a bit of a long bow to draw now.

Enormous Bow!!! A game that is only relevant to one of the clubs that took place 72 years ago does not make a rivalry.

I was told once at a leadership course not to openly criticise ideas unless you have at least got a reasonable alternative. (Unless the first idea was complete bollocks!) Well how's this for the Rivalry Round we should of had.

Adelaide vs Port Adelaide
West Coast vs Fremantle
Brisbane Lions vs Essendon (if it bleeds you can kill it)
Sydney vs St.Kilda (the old "Battle of the Lake" from years ago - and that 2 AFL Legends Lockett & Cazaly played for both)
Geelong vs Bulldogs (same side of town)
Hawthorn vs North (9 finals in 5 years inc. 3 GFs and 2 PFs)
Collingwood vs Melbourne (more Gfs together than any 2 teams plus the highest H&A crowd ever)
Richmond vs Carlton (A rivalry from the 60s & 70s that bordered on hatred)

Not perfect but better than what we have. No...come to think of it, from this year's Rivalry Round there are only 3 matches that are between traditional rivals - so it is complete bollocks.

This would be better

Hawthorn vs Melbourne-merger, the 2 supporters dont like each other
Kangaroos vs Sydney-"boo a roo"
Western Bulldogs vs Brisbane-Libba and the scratching incident
St.Kilda vs Carlton-Remember the Spoons, and the big jack tragic history comment
Essendon vs West Coast-Jacket waving
Geelong vs Richmond-1967 Grand Final, Polly Farmer's remarks still to this day about the game
Port vs Collingwood-Battle for the Magpie mocker, intresting Hertiage Round discussion
Fremantle vs Adelaide?

On the afl website they make reference to the fact that st kilda v north have a 50-50 win loss ratio against each other.

I think it is safe to say that the rivalry round really has missed us this year, lets just hope we get the 4 points.

We're just the two leftover teams.

We've always been a club that most people feel sorry for and at the moment we seem to be a team that a lot of supporters love to hate. It's a lot more enjoyable now.

I don't think we are destined to ever have a positive head-to-head record against another club so I'd be tipping the Kangaroos on that reason alone.

It's our first game in Melbourne this year, hopefully the attendance can top the 35,000-40,000 mark.

You've got us at a vulnerable time and are currently playing good footy but we are at the venue where we've won around 16 straight games.

I'm really looking forward to it.

There are a few traditional rivalries there

A few traditional ones but the other 8 teams got stuff all!! Both your alternative and mine offer 8 legitimate rivalries. The AFL has 4 and then it just got too hard so they stuck together some other. FFS, Richmond and the Bulldogs have never even made the finals in the same year!!!!!

Terry Wallace had a bit of a whinge about getting the Bulldogs. Said it was a bit cheeky in light of his recent move, etc. Combine that with Nathan Brown and the Liberatore/Knights incident and you have a bit of recent history.

I don't think we have a long-standing rivalry with another club, it's one of the by-products of being crap for 100 years. There are clubs we hate but it's not reciprocated with the same feelings that they have for the likes of Carlton, Essendon etc.

In the coming years it is teams like Melbourne and Geelong that I see us having an on-field rivalry with.
