Well - I'm told that with diagnosis in hand the Cats hierarchy have a decision to make.

Hawkins stress fracture / hot spot will only heal with an enforced lay-off to take the weight off the foot. So I guess that they either risk him and keep playing him with a reduced workload on the training track and see if they can nurse him through ............. or take a longer term view and tell him the season is over and to not risk further damage that could threaten his career.

Personally , I think that depending on the severity he will be eased through a lighter workload over the next month in case he is required come September. Geelong won't risk his future but they'll certainly want him available if possible. I still think he's part of Bomber's plans come September to stretch sides such as Hawthorn with suspect backline depth. Also - he becomes critical if we were to cop an injury to Mooney or Lonergan.

With all the attention on Mooney / Johnston I have a feeling we may see a Lonergan or Hawkins get under the guard and play a critical role come September.

Don't suppose you are talking about Jennifer?

I have been waiting for an update after yesterdays news.
I suppose it could have been worse.

Using Matthew Egan's ongoing struggles as an example, I'd put the Tommahawk on ice for the rest of the season. It's at 'hot spot' stage now, we don't want it to get any worse and risk a young bloke with superstar potential getting a Hird-like recurring stress-fracture injury.

We owe it to Tom not to let that happen.

What he said.

Worst comes to worse we play West or Mumford.

Need to get him swimming and make him lose a bit of that size. His injury last year and this one are both a result of too much stress on his lower leg, ie. too much bulk. I think he's done too many weights and has grown too fast for his joints/ligaments to accomodate it.

It was mentioned in the Addy today that Hawkins is due back next week - so dont know who to believe...:D

Ankle injury delays Nathan Ablett return to VFL

GEELONG premiership forward Nathan Ablett is expected to make his return to VFL football next week.

The 21-year-old rolled an ankle two weeks ago, forcing him out of a comeback game which was initially expected to come last weekend against Collingwood.

The injury is likely to see him also miss this week's game against Sandringham, with a return now expected against Port Melbourne at Skilled Stadium next Sunday.

Ablett walked out on the Cats in January this year, but has been at all VFL training sessions since returning to the club a month ago.

Tom Hawkins, who has been suffering a foot injury, is also expected to return next week against the Boroughs.

Meanwhile, former Geelong VFL player Simon Clarke is gravely ill in a Vienna hospital after developing the blood-poisoning condition sepsis.

The 26-year-old was on a tour through Europe when he developed an infection after having a tooth taken out.

Clarke was taken to hospital in the Austrian capital after passing out.

He played 27 games for Geelong over three years after crossing from Essendon's VFL affiliate, the Bendigo Bombers, where he played 10 games.

He played 10 games for the Cats last season, but suffered a hamstring injury four weeks before the finals and did not make it back as the team made its way towards the premiership.

Geelong had been hoping Clarke would return to the club after his trip.
