pick 56 - WCE - Angus Sheldrick - Claremont - 179cm 88kg

i was wanting to take a small forward here, but i think WCE are in need of more mids and they are keen on Sheldrick i believe, he was big in the state games and in the WAFL Colts GF, i was really wanting to pick Paul Curtis here as best available, i even contemplated Tunstill as a good option, but i went with Sheldrick as he has some hype and also WCE fans want to pick him up, he needs to work on his fitness and athletic ability because he has a very state league physique but he has good mentals and steps up in big games.

Blackhawk42 you're up

I missed out of my pick of Sheldrick by 1 selection! Thanks Davo-27.

Thankfully I have a back up.

Fremantle selects James Tunstill.

A hard working, line-breaking mid who models his game on departed Docker Adam Cerra, 'Jason' joins the club after enjoying a solid season in the WAFL Colts. At 76kg but a handy 185cm, Jase has time on his side to continue developing into a future midfielder but could easily be deployed onto a wing in the mean time.

I had this write-up ready if Murley was taken before Carlton’s 2nd pick… it seem a shame to waste it. So, re-purposed for GWS:

Ronald Fejo jr. 178cm, 70kg

Anyone in need a specialist wingman will take Fejo jr in a heartbeat. Once he is AFL ready his name will be put on a magnet for the wing and see it not move for the next 10+ years.

Class: tick, Speed: tick, Skill: tick, Agility: Elite! But will he crumble as soon as he is tackled? Not if the “don’t argue” and contested mark in this clip are indicative of what he will become. And is there a little bit of Michael Long in the way he moves!

Some players play like the are going to war. Fejo jr looks like he is a cat toying with a mouse.

This boy has the tools to become an All Australian and is a brilliant addition to GWS’s list.

Is 184cm not 178cm

Pretty sure those measurements are from U 16 Nationals and were taken for the West Adelaide site

I thought he did I’m happy to pick again?
I cannot see anyone having a problem with that.

I’m happy to take your word for it... the heights and weights provided are often less than current reality and are at best indicative… original post now fixed.

Would be good to see if the SA combine has the official heights also

Hey TDS7 and everyone else, to get this Phantom Draft finished before the real deal starts, how about we open up selection on a “first in best dressed basis“. Many of us are finished anyway and so there should not be too many conflicts of choices.

The National Draft section could open from 8:00am Wednesday and, if people are interested, the Rookie Draft from 10am.

Thoughts?

At this point I think everyone who people were interested in has been picked. For now, lets have the thread just be some write-ups and discussion of the untaken and rookie draft players. Not much point in keeping the pick system at this point unless someone desperately wants to make a pick.

Reality is the draft will be complete around or just after the 50 pick mark, so we’ve done ok.
Mmm, I'm pretty happy to say the draft is closed here and people can keep discussing unpicked players if they want.

Thanks to everyone for participating, next year we'll get it sorted out a bit earlier.
Any nominees for Draft Haul of the Thread?

Ward
Draper
Clarke
Lohmann
Sam Frost 2

Is decent, although I was hoping to have a Chesser or Sonsie instead of Clarke that high.

Apologies all for my exuberance and long write-up, I think I have enjoyed being a Phantom recruiter a little too much… 🥴

Carlton’s Draft Summary
Started with picks 25, 64, 82

Initially pick swapped 25 & 64 with the WB for 23 & 83 with the intent to get the best player available with my one pick.

But after Jones’ retirement and presumably a new list spot opening up, pick 23 was traded to Sydney in a split for picks 32 and 38

Final result:
Pick 34: Leek Alleer… KPB
Pick 41: Cooper Murley… Sml fwd/mid
Pick 76: Matt Kennedy … Rookie elevation
Pick 84: Josh Honey … Rookie elevation.
Rookie: Matthew Cottrell
Rookie: Lochie O’Brien

Draft Strategy: to draft role players that fill a needs for 2022

With 2 rookie upgrades and only 1 main list spot to fill, the initial draft strategy was to trade pick 25 up to 23 by trading back pick 64 and then hopefully snagging either Zac Taylor (not likely) or Blake Howes. But everything changed when Liam Jones announced his retirement.

The Blues are looking to press into the finals from 2022 and so a replacement for Jones was needed that would be ready to go. The best likely available key back that looked capable of stepping straight into the AFL was Charlie Dean (not expecting that Leek Alleer would slide through to pick 34).

The first step was to split pick 23(25) into two later pick. The next was to make sure that I had a pick before North’s 2nd as they were the likely competition for a mature KPD. Needless to say I could not be happier when the Swans came to the party with two picks in the 30s before North‘s double header at picks ~40&41. I felt pick 38 should get the job done on Charlie Dean freeing up pick 32 to target Carlton’s need for a specialist Small Forward or Wing.

Blake Howes on the wing was the dream but that vision quickly evaporated. Judson Clarke was the first choice offensive crumbing small forward that I felt fit the Blues. Unfortunately he was also snapped up before Pick 34 as was Motlop. A Ned Long, Charlie Dean combo looked huge but it was not to be with Ned taken. Come time to pick, and to my great surprise, there was Leek Alleer still on the table. Without hesitation the Charlie Dean option was abandoned for the the human jumping-jack. No matter what happened from here on in, the Blues had hit the jackpot. Liam Jones is athletically gifted but Alleer is on another level. With the next pick I really wanted to pick Ronald Fejo Jr for the wing but felt a contested crumbing fwd was the priority and Cooper Murley fit the bill.

I started out with Clarke and Dean as my most likely preferred outcome, but finished with a better combo in Alleer and Murley. The Bluebaggers cleaned up.

Who were the notable unpicked players?

No love for my man Arthur Jones.
Who else?
Angus Anderson

Ps. I think our draft is very realistic finishing here and most other boards have wayyyy too many picks.
Davo-27 is a big wrap for Paul Curtis. I like Curtis as well but think he will take a few years to break it into the AFL. A couple of years with Breust in hitting a pack with timing and speed and he may become a similar force in the AFL.

As to others: there are so many.
Ben DeBolfo was a standout intercepting HB in the games that I have seen…he should get on a list.

Blayne O’Lachlin is a Caleb Daniel clone, he is smart and tidy in his distribution from the backline… but oh so short.

For X factor untapped = Austin HARRIS… but GC will take him.

Alistair Lord has been touted by many, Miller Bergman, and Corey Preston as well.
