Hey guys,

just wanted to ask if there was any substance down Geelong way of the Hawks chasing Andrew Mackie and being in discussions with the Cats re his availability.

I know he recently signed a 4 year contract but the talk does seem to be gathering momentum since last night with one "rumour" of Hawks already offering our end of first round compo pick and an exchange of second rounders as the Cars are looking for a quick mini rebuild and that trade deal does make sense and sounds like what the Hawks may realistically offer.

I can't see the Cats letting him go but there is persistant talk circulating.

Cheers

It's been discussed in the "Mackie to South Australia" thread mate. When I see a reasonably reliable source showing either he wants to leave or we are open to a trade I'll take it half seriously. With a new coach coming in my feeling is he'll be going nowhere. But, as a matter of interest, what could you offer that would be of any interest. You're hot-to-trot for Hill of the Bullies and he won't come cheap.

For Buddy? yes done deal!!

Seriously.. I don't think he will go. Even though he got dropped for finals, I can't see Geelong letting him go.

If Mackie does go, although its seems like its just rumours ATM, maybe we could throw in Blake as well.... you know, as a sweetner ;).

But, as its been said on this board and in the trades board, because Mackie is contracted, was pick 7, a previous AA, 26 years old and a very decent defender the Hawks or whoever would have to offer ALOT for us to let him go... ALOT!

I think the most reasonable deal I've heard is the Mackie to Hawks for our end of first round compo pick and an exchange of second rounders but I might be inclined to amend that to our compo pick and maybe Beau Muston.

I'm thinking that either of those would be fair really but again can't see the Cats trading Mackie regardless but had to do my due diligence to see if there is Amy substance in the Hawks chasing Mackie banter.

Just cannot see it happening - not worth a trade pick so high that Hawks have.

And what player would you trade for him ? I rate a few Hawks but none would you let go to get a deal done. Closest maybe Gillham and a second round draft pick - but not sure that Geelong rate him highly enough - even if you were prepared to trade him.

Your compo pick is still a second round pick no matter when you use it. Anything after pick 18 is a second round pick no matter how much mayo you use.

Not that it will happen anyway but let us repeat a second rd pick for a contracted, 26 yr old all aust. All of us are happy to keep him.

Start talking Lewis or at very worse your pick 19 and your compo pick to even get in the ball game

Now that's overating him if ever I have seen it. Players worthy of those two picks do not het dropped for a finals series regardless of form!

Mackie is NOT an All Australian.

I'd give him up for Sewell.

Holy cow... hes not an AA. Only nominated twice. Thats weird, I thought he was.

Why does everyone think he is.... even this Herald Sun article says he is;

A dual premiership and All-Australian backman, Mackie pressed his case for a recall by training intensely with Max Rooke and ruckman Mark Blake in Geelong yesterday.

Must be Geelong propoganda.

Nah! The last thing we need is another slow midfielder. Wellsy has said we're looking for more leg speed there and he's spot on.

As I said earlier, I haven't seen anything half convincing from either the club or Mackie that he will be leaving. I was just interested in what the OP thought they would offer. With the Hawks having to give quite a bit to get their number one target - Hill from the Bulliies - they've got nothing worth taking a second look at anyway.

I think it would be fair to say we will see more of varcoe in the midfield next season to add that pace we talk of needing. Selwood and Jimmy B plus i see kel pushing up there aswell.

If we did trade for lewis i wouldn't be excited but i would also not be disappointed. Has a bit of mongrel in him that we could use, especially in the packs along with selwood. But we would also need another outside mid possibly with draft picks.

I think Hawthorn is used to trading with North Melb. They seem to think its norm to offer crap and expect roses. He is contracted and unless its juicy I dont see any deal getting done.

Any player can lose form or favour but that can change at any time , and we now have a new coach coming in which can change everyones comfort factor. Admittedly , having a look at what's being traded every ruckman is Polly Farmer and every rover is Leigh Mathews but Mackie was P7 and he is a better player now than then He is a two times Premiership player where he was a key player in the side. If we trade him for a failed player like Muston and R2 pick , Balme would a hell of a lot of explaining to do.

Convince GC that Muston is worth an R1 pick and put that with your comp deal and then we can start talking.

I'd trade Mackie for Clinton Young + their first rounder/Brown compo pick.

We have good cover for Mackie, Young would provide some of the leg speed and long, accurate kicking that we could really use, and a pick in the top 30 could well turn up a pretty decent kid.

With no senior coach in place, it would be grossly irresponsible to trade a quality and contracted player. Who knows that they are planning for Mackie? A move forward? To the wing? Wells does not seem to me to be an irresponsible guy.

The only thing we should doing with Mackie is locking him in a darkened weights room for 12 hours a day with Goddard’s Grand Final performance shown on loop.

Besides its Hawthorn, any deal would have to extra special it being our most hated rivals. NEXT!

Reading the Hun , it looks like they have allbut done a deal for Hale using their comp pick. One can only hope that Hale is sufferer extreme depression , with an ample helping of somatic delusions ; that would ensure he spent abundant time in their sick ward. It would only be fair after the junk they have given North.

I just love the Hawks.

Can't help but think, dropping him in that finals kinda dented his value somewhat

OP, I've seen nothing to indicate the rumour is more than just journalist talk.

That said it might be true.

But as discussed in the other Mackie thread, he has 3 years to run on his contract, so we would only trade him for 2 top 20 picks, or a quality player (for example, elite ruckman)..you can't give the second and won't give the first, so I wouldn't get worked up over the rumour...I'll be staggered if the trade happens.

Agree, it's ridiculous, why can't they understand they must offer 2 top 20 picks or get lost?
