AFL premiers Hawthorn are closing in on Sydney star forward Ryan O'Keefe after a positive reaction from the Swan to a meeting with Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson.
O'Keefe met with Clarkson and Hawthorn chief executive Ian Robson in Sydney and has indicated he is willing to make a move, despite the prospect of a lesser salary than that offered by Sydney.
The Hawks had already met with O'Keefe's manager Tom Petroro.
While Hawthorn still need to agree to contract terms with O'Keefe and strike a trade deal with the Swans, they were 'quietly confident' that the 2005 premiership player would be wearing brown and gold next year.
'We've got past another stage in the sense that we've got Ryan's indication that he would like to play for Hawthorn,' the Hawks player personnel manager Chris Pelchen said.
O'Keefe had previously indicated that the chance to play for a successful club in front of big crowds were key factors in him looking at a move, with the Hawks able to satisfy him on both fronts.
Pelchen said those factors were among several which had O'Keefe leaning towards accepting a contract from the club which would be worth significantly less than he could earn at Sydney or elsewhere.
'It's of lesser monetary value but we believe we could offer a total package, whether it be football or lifestyle or work beyond football,' Pelchen said.
The Hawks must also finalise a trade deal with Sydney, with negotiations revolving around Hawthorn's first round national draft pick, No.16 overall, or their second round (No.34) and players.
A request by the Swans for a straight swap for several Hawthorn players was rejected by the Hawks.
'We're confident we can get a deal done but there's water to go under the bridge both with Ryan and his contract and with Sydney,' Pelchen said.
????????????? what, hey surely waite is the only one that you listed that could be classed as elite. the rest are only serviceable ( that you listed). the argument was that outside of trading and top draft picks you havent developed a great deal of talent. good players dont make great teams.... and great teams identify and develop top talent outside of the first 2 rounds of the draft. you are building a good list with great kids like gibbs, murphy etc. but you have found them by being at the bottom of the ladder. i know of fev obviously and you can probably find some others but i doubt they are anything other than ok to good players.
sorry im not trying to troll.... just think this is a valid point... feel free to disagree... provide reasonable arguments without attacking me please... and i understand you will take you success any way you can get it and i havent outlined anything that isnt well within the rules.
Swans should tell Hawthorn that its pick 16 plus Boyle or he re-signs with them or goes into the PSD.
Simple as that. If the hawks want ROC badly enough they will do the deal. They are in no position to bargain.
Thing is, Boyle is, in all probablity out the door anyway, for a similar reason to why Geelong let go of King last year.
Its not that he's a bad player, but he just won't get the opportunities

You reckon you would let Boyle go cheaply? I thought you would want to include him in a trade to increase its value.
Its pick 16 that will be the sticking point in this trade anyway. I just can't see how the hawks will get ROC unless they are prepared to be reasonable.
If Geelong had room in the cap I would be all for them using pick 15 to secure ROC.
They'll use 16. The wages are the sticking point.
Hell, I'd give Boyle over too.
Wasn't convinced on ROK. I'm warming to it.

You need him more than we do. Hence we are in a position to bargain.
I cant believe we are even in the hunt. What is wrong with ROK?
The speculation is that O'Keefe will only trade with Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn (Geelong would be in the mix as well if they showed interest) see for the reasons posted in the article
Of those clubs, Collingwood has showed little interest and are probably too far off a premiership for O'Keefe's liking and Carlton are reluctant to let go of their first round selection - and rightfully so.
Having said that, Carlton are probably the most likely club, given their salary cap room, pick and potential to turn the applecart and make a last ditched effort to recruit him successully.
I assume O'Keefe has burn't his bridges with Sydney and will happily enter the PSD, where he'll be picked up by Melbourne soley for cash and lifestyle choice only, if the Swans don't do a deal with him, hence there is no incentive to go through the week without trading him
Based on his actions, its fair to assume he thinks the Swans are over their window and will begin a total rebuild over the next year or 2 and are probably in the same boat as Melbourne in terms of premiership window
Yeah because we are awful at developing our own players...need to take a leaf out of the Tigers book dont we when you consider... Brown, Simmonds, Polak, McMahon, Deledio, Cotchin and whoever else i forgot because none of these were high draft picks or got from other clubs.yes the mighty blues and their success at developing their own talent... really to be a good player at carlton you either have to be a number 1 draft pick or get poached from another club....
Carlton are far too arrogant to trade anything good for O'Keefe. Pick 6 and deal would be done as simple as that, cos Carlton have the coin...
Is it just me or are Melbourne getting a bumper deal there? One scenario raised last night would see Green head to Sydney, O'Keefe to Hawthorn and ruckman Simon Taylor and the Hawks pick 16 going to Melbourne. While it is unclear how interested Green is in moving interstate, Sydney — without O'Keefe's $450,000 salary — would have the room to make a move attractive.

Pick 16 and Simon Taylor just for Brad Green?
Its sad to think that a team like hawthorn is in a better position to trade for a quality player like o'keefe because of there success, even though it sounds logical
But they are in a better position because there first round pick is 16 overall! Sydney wanting a first rounder rules out clubs with a lower pick i.e carl(6) and Rich(7) or even Ess(5) just because the pick is way to valuable unlike Hawthorns selection!
