Review Hawks v Cats Match post mortem ...

I'm going to think before I post rather than letting out some of the expletives I used during the last quarter. Excluding 2008 grand final, that's 4 games in a row we have gone down to them by a goal or so (just ridiculous).

Shiels is the first guy that comes into my mind, this bloke is an absolute running machine (the new Bateman maybe, tries his guts out)

Renouf, the guy is working his backside off, he is only 20/21 and rucking against big bodies week in week out, I thought he was solid.

Roughead, I really liked his leading today, our best foward.

Franklin, I think our players forgot who he was today at times, a number of times we could have gone long to Buddy 1 on 1 but chose instead to hold the ball. Played up the field alot today.

Mitchell, I thought he was our best today by a mile.

Murphy, I thought he had a really good game today actually.

Guerra, did a good job on Johnson.

Gibson, did well but can get exposed one out.

Gilham, didn't like his game at all today, really got shown up as a third defender rather than that Trent Croad style body we are searching for.

Cyril, delicious, magic, I mean there are no words really

Peterson, very good second game
Renouf fantastic , Peterson what a goog get . Gibson is great a little small for some big forwards but he'll figure a way around that needs some more help from Gilham. Cyril will be better for the game as will Chance. But Chance needs to listen more his being caught in the cats forward line was a stupid mistake for him to make , now don't go shooting the messanger folks but I've watched a couple of replays and, I think it was Murphy, screaming at him to either pass to him or kick or handball and Chance looks at him then bounces the ball and bang GONE. I was ruined by then as was our game for today. It won't happen again. Don't worry we will get much better as we get fitter and used to each new player and plan. I will say this Geelong are where they're going to be
this year and fitter and stronger they won't get away with that again. Time is comming.
they hate pressure and look out dogs and pies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While its good and dandy to say we almost got there and only just lost against the premiers, we did the exact same thing last year, twice, with an arguably worse off team. I would have thought we'd make ground this year but it was the same deal with playing 2-3 quarters of football then dying when it matters. Missing the old hawthorn spirit of finding something special in the last in those close games.

As has been mentioned, we may have won the first half and them the second, but we could well have been thrashed that 2nd quarter if it wasnt for their kicking yips.

Smashed in the ruck, smashed in the clearances in the 2nd half. Definitely agree we need a 2nd ruckman, not a makeshift 'lets pinch someone from some other spot' ruckman.

Some very worrying signs in the backline when kicking in after a behind, shows they are unable currently to deal with any kind of forward pressure from the oppositsion, like what we did against the dees.

Typical losing a player in the first 10-15min too to hamper rotations, that in itself is getting pretty damn old to watch time after time again.

Hoping they do some serious work on moving the ball out of the defensive 50 this week, too much handballing to guys already under pressure and then fumbling. If we do that against the dogs, we're in strife!

All in all, a disappointing result and a rather disappointing effort apart from early on. Still a long way to go but thankfully its a long season and hopefully we'll only get better. Lucky we only lost by 9 too so our % didnt take as bad a hammering as it perhaps should have.
Too harsh spudmaster, its game two. We always look shaky as we develope each year.We are not last years team and we have a return of players who are not totally ready. We have depth. A footy season is not 30 minutes of a match, but 30 minutes of a match can teach some valuable lessons for a footy season its a work in progress .We will be dynamite this year .Nothing runs smooth its a hard road ,just keep driving it.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Just quickly, Impressed with the endeavour, and disappointed with the loss.

Shiels going into the middle was great to see. Love the way he goes about it. Make no mistake if this kid was a pick 3 or 4 we'd hear his name adnauseum as he is just so ferocious at the ball. As it is, he just slams his body into any contests he can get to and shows maturity beyond his years.

Peterson. Well done son, showed today that you can mix it with the big boys in the big games. Hold that spot.

Cyril, my boy....so good to have you back. Doesn't know how to take it slow, was influencing the game from the moment he came onto the ground.

Now, major gripe time.

We have possibly the best player in the comp standing in the forward arc, hands in the air, wanting the long ball in over the back constantly. A trap we fell into last year, and honestly something I was hoping we'd seen the last of.

It's not good enough. If this bloke gets on his bike, no one can go with him.

I'm not sure if it's a specific role that the forward coach wants him to play, but it's simply not working and it frustrates the hell out of me to watch it.

Franklin is tall, elusive, quick....yet he's positioning himself next to his opponent and trying to wrestle for the long ball in! Or indeed leading away from the ball carrier to the pocket because he's behind his opponent to start with.
What happened to the gazelle like burst to the 50m line that left a defender trailing behind, unable to spoil?

A number of times today we had a player streaming towards the 50, looking up and seeing Buddy next to his opponent motioning for the ball to be kicked in his direction.... this option simply shouldn't be honoured, I don't care who you are.

Other times Franklin was not sure whether to go left, right or towards the player with the ball, and the indecisiveness put even more pressure on the ball carrier.

Thankfully Roughead provided another option at different points, but the disappointment remains the same.

This is not solely a criticism of Franklin, as much as it's a call to have someone in the coaches box put a stop to this hopeless positioning.
We have the best Forward line in the comp, no doubt in my mind, but we simply don't play to our strengths enough, at all.

How long until we send a message out to him, to get him on his bike, and lead at the ball?

I'll be watching this again in future weeks, and I'm hoping like hell we see some improvement.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

I'm still amazed at how many times Ablett drops the ball or incorrectly disposes of it yet doesn't give away a free kick, absolutely annoys the **** outta me. That one in the third quarter, right in front of our goals when he dropped the ball after being tackled just made no sense to me; had to be a free.

For the most part, I think we did good but didn't play our best especially in the 2nd half - we need to keep pressure up after half time.
He's a media fellow .He's their baby they love him they can't stop talking about him ,Womens day love him and womens weekly and new idea love him .The herald /sun the Courier mail the West Australian the Mercury the SMH the Advertiser, they never shut up about him and he is a good player but TV and radio rave about him like he's a god . He gets looked after by umpires and they don't even know it.Everyone else hates him and calls him a pussy, but he can't help that. It would be a shit being him and sooner or later he'll get his footy wise.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Obviously i am not a coach. Nor have i claimed to be. But it is a well known fact that GEE had a very late pre-season to try to keep its veterans list (which is now more or less its list period) fresh for the latter part of the season. It is a reasonable assumption that that means GEE will not be at its best early in the season. I would assume the club would be happy with with a 4-2 win loss scenario come Rd 6. Winning against a potential top 4 sides like Hawthorn who have had a full pre-season and are hungry is a very big TICK for us.

All the best for the rest of the season. I'm sure the Hawks will be there or thereabouts in 2010.
We''ll be all over you when it counts, don't forget.

100% spot on!!!!!!!!

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Thoughts...

Thought they tried really hard today. Can't fault them in that regard...

I must say Buddy was annoying me so much. Hardly ever lead out at all, just wants to play body on body and it isn't working for him. In 2008 he lead for the ball, and used his run as an advantage. I thought he was poor in that regard today, and looked very similar to last year. Also thought he was lazy chasing out of the forward line. He can be as great as he wants to be....didn't do it today. Hope he changes his approach a bit. Will be keen to see if he has learnt from playing on lake in the past and leads and runs, rather than trying to wrestle this week.

Gilham can't go with strong forwards.

Poise in the backline and back disposal was atrocious. Murphy, shoenmakers and more just turned the ball over and handed geelong goals. That really hurt the hawks.

Loved Shiels game, thought gibson did as well as u could ask of him. Liked birchall being more aggressive, guerra had great attack and physical presence. Missed rioli after the first half and hooper giving that chase.

At the end of the day, they should have won. And it will hurt a lot now as we don't play the dogs well at all.

Seems ossie might be gone for a few weeks for his hit on selwood.
When Buddy is in wrestling mode and not leading, he should be ordered up the ground to lay waste to the enemy.

You can take your condescending post and shove it idiot.

OUTS Geelong:

Milburn
Rooke ( If you can count that as an out )
Varcoe ( See Rooke )
Schaplle Stokes ( see Rooke and Varcoe )

OUTS Hawthorn:

Burgoyne
Sewell
Young
Taylor
Bailey ( Will be our best 22 )
Dowler ( Arguable best 22 more depth player)
Whitecross ( See Dowler )
Muston ( See Dowler )
Tuck ( See Dowler )
Skipper ( See Dowler but would have been very handy today )
Stokes ( See Dowler )

Also have Hooper and Lewis available all game.

So lets even things up beside your so called limited pre-season and have all your ins with all our ins and see how things go then tosser.

The only TIC (k) in this game is how Geelong Leeches frees and the umpire allow their wink wink good calls.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Awesome analysis if true. Geelong are not at full strength. No Rooke, no Milburn, no Stokes, and also a list of veterans who didn't even start pre-season until January the 4th. Geelong are underdone big time. Your lads should have won today against a rusty Geelong. In fact, the GFC are expecting loses early this season due to the late/'light on' preparation (where players should peak later in the year). A win like is a a happy bonus to Geelong at this point in time.
What a load of garbage. Of course its a Geelong poster , your gone this year you have peaked, and the season hasn't laid any of its deseases on you yet, but its comming.

was a very disappointing loss, but am not gutted like i usually am. some very good signs. Peterson again was very impressive. One worry was how badly we got thrashed in the stoppages in second half.

Geelong's defence and composure under pressure are outstanding - they are a seasoned side with quality players.

yeah amazing the way they work in defence. it's almost like they handball blindly, knowing well there will be a player in place. is so well organised it's sickening.

.

The upside is that in going down to a near full strength reigning premiership team with some of our players not performing to thier usual standard we can look forward to better days.

X had a downer. Birch showed glimpses of his best but is not up to his '08 form. It was Buddy's first hit out. Ozzie was really sore. So was Laddo. One ruck is a no no! Browny wasn't his usual self. Josh needs more time to fit in to the Hawks style I wish he was about 10cm taller. Hodgey was covering some gaps. Just to mention some aspects of falling just short of what it takes to beat the Cats.

At times we overused the pill with handball - there were many link-ups that fizzed. We'll improve over the next few rounds.

These are not excuses but reasons.
Correct totally.

I was fairly happy with Morton today. Both goals were nice set shots, the first with a small amount of pressure from the oncoming player and the second a crucial shot to keep us in the game. Would still like to see him become more dominant around the HF line, but finally showing some promising signs.:thumbsu:

I would prefer him sent to the bench to be given a chat to by Clarko. I don't whether it's a loss of confidence or over confident but whatever it is I want to see him leading out like a steam train and taking those beautiful pin point kicks that shiels sent in to Roughie.

Much impressed with Shiels ignored the lead of franklin to the pocket and waited for Roughie to lead at him and smacked him perfectly on the chest. Not a defender in the league could have prevented that.

Milburn is our most experienced defender.
Rooke (if you can count that as an out) - you are kidding right? Equal third in last year's Norm Smith and arguably our most influential player in the last quarter that day.

Varcoe and Stokes are both premiership forwards and one, if not both, is permanently in our best 22.

You lost Hooper early, we lost Motlop early. Neither returned.

You're including two guys who've never pulled on a brown and gold jumper in your list of ours. I may as well say we were missing Marcus Drum, who will probably end up playing more games in our backline than Lonergan this year, but is returning from a hamstring injury. The likes of Dowler and Cam Stokes may be depth players for you guys, but they are also whipping boys among your supporters.

Sewell was your only top 10 player missing today, Burgoyne has the potential to be a top 10 player but hasn't played a game yet.

Whinge about the umpiring, whinge about inaccurate kicking and turnovers in your backline - whatever you like - but don't claim that missing borderline depth players and LTI cases like Max Bailey cost you the game.

Regardless, I was reasonably impressed with the Hawks today. Rioli and Franklin will only get better and it was disappointing Hooper got injured after some promise last week. Clearly you ran out of legs in the last quarter and the lack of a second ruckman really hurt you, Renouf could barely get off the ground in the last. Surely you can bring in Grimley, even if he's not 'ready' for AFL footy?

You can't seriously name 90% of our list as possible best 22 players and give no credit to Geelong for the players they had missing also.

Sure we some decent had players missing, as did they.

They WERE underdone, it's common knowledge that they've had some interrupted preseasons over at Kardinia park, but as shown by the inclusions of Bateman and Rioli, so to were a couple of our players.
It all counts for nought though, because at the end of the day Geelong ran the game out better, and regardless of who we had injured on the bench or who was missing we've got to get better.

I should say, I think will, too.

Clarkson is not the coach in charge of the forward line.

Sorry, got a bee in my bonnet about this one. Best I log off.

Stick around, Galon, I'll let you know if you start frothing at the mouth.

Yes I know - I would still prefer him to be sitting on the bench rather than running downfield and I presumed (and tbh, don't really know so shouldn't really comment) that it would be clarko that gives the mouthful. He needs to lead and I am tired of him playing behind the man. As I said, I hope more players do a Shiels and look for the leading roughie instead. Overall the forward line is not working and when I look at how Brisbance functioned the other night this is what I want from ours.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Ablett is a little sheepdog. Always on the outskirts, never wins his own ball. His teams mates should be the ones getting the Kudos.
