Maybe the Hawks cheersquad could get a "de-fense clap, clap, clap, de-fense, clap, clap, clap" thing going every time the opposition penetrates their defensive 50.
it could get quite irritating singing that the WHOLE game :D

just kidding. gilham and dawson will be much improved this year, along with a young fella by the name of tom murphy. with smith, guerra, birchall and hodge down there when needed, this could turn into a formidable line up in the coming years.

I wouldn't say Smith, Guerra, Birchill and Hodge all in defence is a good idea, they aren't excatly great stoppers, they just create run from the half back line.

Also I think Hodge would play mostly midfield.

Yeah, and anyone at the game new that Croads first quarter was outstanding and he destroyed Whitnall. Then Walker went on to him and shut him down. If you think otherwise you are an idiot.
Hold on a sec, so you can be judged BOG from a decent first quarter? Get your hand off it...

Are you saying that the game wasnt set up and won by croads first quarter? What planet are you on. Are you denying that Walker did not keep Croad far quieter and allowed him to have far less impact on the game from quarter time. Next you'll tell me that Whitnall did nothing when he went forward that night.

You are an idiot.

But, enough deflection from Hawthorn fans, back to the topic. Hawthorn's defence is crap and that is what will hold them back from becoming a really quality side.

I think the ruck department may be a trouble too.
But footy is a funny game and form and luck play a big part of it.

Very true with the luck bit. I would've thought your ruck department was pretty good. Robbie Campbell is a real good player and there are another couple of good young guys coming through (I only can remember Taylors name). Id be happy to take Campbell off your hands.

Is it just me or does it seem like Hawthorn are the most talked about team in the comp in the last few days... appart from the eagles and their drug taking exploits

It goes around in cycles, every team gets discussed. the backline of Hawthorn is obvisouly its weakness and the club recognised that by going so hard for Thornton. If Hawks supporters think otherwise they should take off the rose coloured glasses. Our side has had that many defficencies over the last few years it isn't funny. But i for one wouldn't be saying that our midfield was great because we had stevens and couple of others in there. Our backline was below par and this pretty much reflected our position on the ladder. The Hawks will no doubt be chasing hard at the end of the year for some experienced back line players. Plenty of good young talent there, no doubt about that, but it's the backline that be will be your weakness

Must of been impressive to keep Corad to only 3 brownlow votes and 15 marks..
And? What do the umps know.

I suppose you believe that Shane Woewodin was the best player in 2000, or that Greg Williams wasn't one of the best against against the Dees in Round 10, 1993 just because some footy almanac tells you so.

Seems like a slight backpedal there. I believe yout initial words were "Walker tore Croad a new one".

Anyone who was at the game and had their head out of their arse would also acknowledge the effort of Carlton's engine room in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, when they lifted a gear, dominated possession, flooded back heavily and starved Hawthorn's forward line of opportunities. Walker did play quite well, even winning a couple of one on one contests, but it should be remembered that after 1/4 time, Croad still had 13 possessions, took 8 marks and kicked 2 goals, including the sealer. Hardly a whupping from Walker.

But we all love to get excited about our respective club's talented kids.
Nothing wrong with that.

the backline of Hawthorn is obvisouly its weakness and the club recognised that by going so hard for Thornton.
Our backline isn't our weakness. We have a weakness filling both key defensive posts, but have managed to cover this pretty well. Our backline is actually pretty good. We have a number of options across half back and we've been adept at shutting down the opposition and rebounding the footy. It's our forward line that has been the problem. That's why the coach was forced to throw Croad up there.

Yep, can't wait, but then I'm sure some desperate posters will still try to find some reason, any reason, as to why Carlos is no good anyway. By the way, wasn't it the 'real season' when he gave Barry Hall a towelling last year?
And Zac Dawson kept Kent Kingsley goalless and restricted Matthew Lloyd to 2 goals last weekend...
