Gonna take a while to get used to Vince Vaughn acting seriously. First ep was good, not sure why there were so many bad reviews, I'm most interested in Rachael McAdams character at the moment

I think most are having issues with watching it as a standalone story, and keep thinking that because its the same show it should be ranked against the first season. I think it might have been received better if they changed the title of the show, but that would also have a downside with losing the hype and word of mouth/known name.

American Horror story had the same issues. even though it was never as good as season 1 was.

Really enjoyed it. Felt like a setup episode which is fine considering the ammount of characters to follow. The 8 episode format suggests to me things are gonna get out of hand very quickly. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people got onto true detective retrospectively and had the luxury to binge watch (therefore being more ok with 'slower paced' episodes).
The acting was all great. I kept a particular eye out for Vaughn, and he's doing very well so far. The scene with the Russian businessman and the dinner party scenes may have seemed relatively uneventful, but you could see in Vaughn's body language that this character has a very dangerous side that is just waiting to resurface again. His wife is obviously great for him at keeping him in check, but now with the death of the man he loaned his fortune to (Casper) I think we'll see him take a dark turn.
Also, that scene in the bar with Farrell was sensational, the song in the background haunting. All in all, it just left me wanting more!

I was still looking forward to this, despite the negative reviews.

Gee, they're not wrong so far. Pizzaboy isn't so great now that he's not plagiarising.

The problem is that Season 1 pretty much came out of nowhere. "Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in a cop show? Uh okay". It hit like a f***ing volcano. Season 2 was never going to have that much of an impact.

I think most people built the hype up because they were able to binge it and not have to wait week to week so the slow burn pacing wasn't as obvious to them in S1. I watched S01E01 the day it aired and whilst it was a great opening it was still a very slow opening, it took a few episodes for the show to get to the stage where waiting a week for the next episode seemed an impossible task. Now that we've got this opening episode out of the way to introduce the new characters and setting I expect things will pick up big time in the next few weeks.

The expression alone on the Rachel McAdams character is great let alone the potential for the character. Some real despair there.
Interesting enough foundation laid for the show with some decent characters. The LA Noire vibe was welcome. I'll reserve my judgement until a few episodes in. Colin Farrell welcomes this :p Have to remember not every episode from season one hit me for six.

I loved that LA Noir vibe thoughout the ep.

The aerial shots along the coast line always remind me of gta v, good memories.

Farrells character is def gonna keep things interesting and is gonna take the show to some dark places past and present.

McAdams was good not sure where they are gonna take her story yet. Enjoyed the interaction with her dad and even though his character was a bit cleche I liked they showed he still has a bit or a normal side. Plus he gave a pretty good smackdown and insight into her at the same time. Had some good dialogue there

Honestly thought kitch was a serial killer for a second there, one intense dude.

Subtle intro for Vaughn I though but like like one of the other posters said he is gonna go bang.

Haven't read any reviews as critics opinions don't matter in the slightest. I am certain the first Ep of season 1 was a slow burn. Was no better than this one in my opinion. Set the story up well And introduced the characters, but it wasn't until later the show got awesome. Hopefully history repeats.

Good start, standards remain as high as season 1 for the most part, interesting to see where the story goes from here.

As for the criticisms comparing it to the opener of season 1, it's hardly paced any differently, we just arrive at the crime effectively one episode later. The first episode of season 1 didn't really 'kick' until that last scene revealing the new murder and Cohle's response "then start asking the right f***ing questions." Based on the trailer for next weeks episode things are really going to kick up a notch too.

Liked it enough, though it didn't capture me like S1.

I'm not sure if people overestimate Pizzolatto as a storyteller, or properly rate him but personally I loved the first season because of Fukunaga, Marty & Rust that elevated the story. There's a nice vibe here, but Justin Lin's no Cary. Lack of visual imagery hurts in that regard I guess.

But I think this season will be fine overall. Helps when you've got McAdams and Farrell and I hope they can bounce off each other like Woody and McConaughey did.

I love Riggins but I'm still not sure if Kitsch is a good actor.

Vaughn was okay, but that line of not doing anything out of hunger, not even eating, was the stupidest ****ing thing.

Comparing it to season 1 is just silly and unreasonable.

This is a whole new story, in a completely different place and with a totally different "feel".

The end scene was great and no doubt the story will really pick up from here.

It was a reasonably slow burn until Farrell beat the shit out of that kid's dad while the kid had to watch. Brutal.

It was a decent episode, I think it's set it up well.

I'm not sure on having four central characters, but I won't make any sweeping judgements based on one episode. I did like the addition of lead female character, brought a bit of a different feel which I enjoyed.

Weird, I thought that was one of the more interesting, revealing lines of the episode. His character is clearly trying hard to change his ways and sees any action designed purely to satisfy an appetite as selfish and dangerous. Possibly speaking from experience. It's one liners like that, that make this such a good show imo.

easily the best things about the first season were the acting and directing. the writing wasnt something i was overly fond of and its the only major thing returning (depending on what the acting is like) so as my acquisition is nearing its end my expectations are, as they have always been, tempered.

I really enjoyed the first episode... the production, cinematography and acting brilliant and I haven't got a clue where the story is heading but can't wait to find out!

Some really shitty dialogue and a little too corny at times, but certainly not a bad start. If nothing else, I'm intrigued to see where all four main characters are heading.

Definitely agree with this. There was some quality writing, no doubt, but I think more than anything lightning just struck the series big time, and Pizzolatto benefited from it big time. Too early to judge too harshly just yet though.

People will always compare to s1 but by the end of ep 1 we knew we were seeing something special with mconougheys performance/character. You wont see acting that good in most of the best films you see. You could even argue he was better in TD than he was in DLC.

Its a large shadow being cast over this season but imo thats unfair because you rarely see anything good as what we saw last year

Anyways when did NP all of a sudden become a bad writer? Jeez.

He wrote a brilliant few eps last year with great dialogue all by himself and now he is the weak link? Yes there were weak points and it wasnt perfect but give the guy credit were its due.
