Why? Hope it’s not because of Cohle’s tired congratulatory self-serving spiel that atheists tell themselves ad nauseam to feel superior to another group of people. For mine anyone that needs to denigrate others to feel better about their place in the world come across as more pathetic than their original intended target.

Anyway I thought the opening scene was good as far as providing a lot insight into Cohle’s character and what makes him tick. But even then I thought it was a little self-indulgent, going for far too long than was necessary. Then again TV and Hollywood love to stick the boot on a soft religious target as often as they can.

I guess he was pointing out that both the religious and the godless have no choice but to feel they have superiority of knowledge and understanding compared to everyone else, it's just that with one package you get a personal divine promise of salvation, the other youi get nothing, in every sense of the word.

The Wire is my favourite show precisely because of what you said: sustained quality over the journey.

Not sure what to say about that ep. It was ridiculously amazing and so far this show has been perfect beyond any words I can muster. It can't be compared fairly to shows like BB, Soprano's, Wire etc because it's 4 episodes compared to 60+ but it's so much better than anything else.

Great episode and I'll echo the sentiments about that last shot. It sucks there is only 4 more episodes with Rust and Marty, Rust is fascinating as a character with how he is willing to do things.

Unpopular opinion coming up, so look away if you're easily offended - Matthew McConaughey has turned into the best actor in the game. Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective are both amazing - good enough to make you forget about Fool's Gold and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
