Good find. Would be a relative of the former sheriff you would think. Also noticed how they said the call for the disappearance of Marie Fontenot was eventually declared as Made in Error. Then Cohle is going through a list of all these reports of missing children being listed as made in error. Definitely hinting at the MO of this group.

Also a current theory of mine

I am starting to think the Harts children may not be there own. Or at least the younger one because the of the conversation of when they had the dolls arranged. The older one was telling the younger one that her parents were killed in a car accident .[spoiler\]

What about the mower man from a few episodes ago.

They only get to talk to him briefly. He doesn't really provide them with anything and is a fairly nondescript in his personality/demeanour.

Cohle also says it takes him 2 minutes to tell if someone is guilty. I just reviewed the scene and they spoke for 50-55 seconds. Then Hart beeps and they have to go immediately.

The entire time he is talking to Cohle he is at a precarious angle and you can only seen one side of his face. When Hart beeps he turns for a split second before the shot returns to Cohle and you can make out a scar/facial burns on the other side. Further to this if he wasn't sitting on the mower I reckon he would be pretty tall.

This picture I found on images is also interesting.

Yeah, lawnmower man being involved somehow is a pretty popular theory going round. It would add up.

Look whats hanging up all over his office...

When Cohle asks Hart if he ever went hunting, he mentioned a 10 point buck...

Hunting is popular in that state, but still... pretty interesting.

It seems to be bigger than just looking for 1 person. So yes they are looking for the killer but there are also a lot of other interesting people that must be involved - I think the mower man might be one of those 'involved people' rather than the killer.

If you step back from it, Hart killing Reggie Ledoux was unexpected and almost calculated. Could he be covering up something, using the children as an excuse?

Also before he was shot Reggie was going on about black stars.

So glad I've found this thread. I've been trying to find somewhere to read about theories easter eggs etc from TD.

I listened to this "after buzz" podcast about the show and it was the biggest waste of time. The people on that show are absolutely clueless.

from a recent interview with creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto

Sounds like you really fell in love with both the characters and the men who play them. Is there a chance that you would break from the anthology concept, if given the option?

I miss them as men and I miss them as characters. Honestly, that would be up to Woody and Matthew. If those guys wanted to do anything I’d probably jump on it.

So if they said they wanted to come back for a second season, you’d do it?.

Oh yeah. I could write Cohle forever.

More here.

I like the idea of it being an anthology and likening the story arches to individual novels. I think the Matt and Woody combo could lose that X factor if it was forced into a more linear story.

Just as he could write Cohle forever, I could watch him forever. But I'm also liking the anthology idea, provided it can keep around this level.

I leaning towards Hart being heavily involved. In the last ep he and Ledoux never make eye contact and when he starts to cuff him Ledoux says "it's starting" - Rust thinks he is talking to him and tells him to shut up. I now think he is talking to Hart.

Add to that how weird his kids act - doll orgy, picture and now his older daughter with two blokes.

I like the 10 point deer. Ending up on the dead girl.

He also did not want Rust anywhere near the lawn mower man. Did not go with Rust to talk to him - and I agree with many that he will be involved.

He also led Rust to find the stick thing at the disable kids house.

He went by himself to the rave to get the info Ledoux is cooking for the bikies. I think this was rubbish and he already knew - this part never happened or he just went through the motions.

Convenient that Rust is linked to this exact bikie gang.

I could be miles off but Hart is a player in this.

Interesting points. The rave thing is the hole, which can only really be explained by it not actually happening. I hope and don't think that's the case. His daughter obviously is, and I'm thinking his in-laws, but I'm not sold on Hart being involved.

Just looking at the actors involved so far.

Insofar as 'big name' actors go there are two who come to mind...We've seen Shea Whigham (Eli in Boardwalk Empire) as Joel Theriot once. And Clarke Peters from The Wire and Person of Interest, also once (the Minister Cohle and Hart visit). Surely they wouldn't get these guys in to do just one scene? I wonder if they have a role to play?

Interesting that it's been mentioned that there is a big focus on duality. So each 'clue' that is presented may not necessarily mean what we think it does.

It's also been speculated that Cohle might actually still be undercover (in 2012). Or was undercover at some stage.

I began reading The King in Yellow tonight on my break at work.

If the Yellow King is the head honcho in TD and it is a cult thing...the book mentions servants of the Yellow King and that these servants have signs/insignia/imagery that let you know their affiliation (in a basic sense). I wonder if it is a cult thing, if characters who may be involved have something on their person or in their office (etc) that allude to this?

I don't think Harts involved. He keeps mentioning about "paying attention to the wrong clues" and being "gulity of neglecting" his family and the sotution being "right under his nose". I think this sort of ties in with the family/inlaws theory.
