It was the sister of the missing girl, she said something about finding it in a safe deposit box that was mentioned in a letter (along with some of her things).

Another one of those crucial bits of dialogue lost in the mire of the stupid dialogue "im gonna start trusting that hot feeling in the back of my neck".

So someone sent her the letter? Or she just found it in amongst whatever her sister left lying around before she went missing?

"I think" the missing girl sent her sister a letter, in that letter there was a reference to a box (i assumed safety deposit but not sure) which her sister checked and found all that stuff in.

Happy to be proven wrong cause it wasn't clear, at all.

Couldn't help but laugh at the attorney general suddenly deciding to make them all undercover detectives.

The lady said there was a post office box attached to her old address (the one notebook evicted her from in the first episode) because she moved she didn't get the bill for ages but once she paid the bill and cleared it out the letter from her sister along with the photos was there

It's certainly been a much better episode than the first 4 (bar the intense shoot-out at the end of the last episode) as more of the story comes together. It seems like most of the recaps online have echoed the same thoughts (which I totally agree with) that even if the last 3 episodes are amazing, the season as a whole will still be judged poorly as the first half just doesn't stand up on their own as stand-alone episodes. Boardwalk Empire sometimes suffered from the same thing, but I think they managed to stay on the tightrope most of the town.

Loved:
- The beatdown of the plastic surgeon. Did anyone else get a worryingly large amount of satisfaction from that scene? Angry Colin Farrell is a great Colin Farrell.
- The reveal that Ray had killed the wrong guy and in doing so, gotten himself into a mobster's pocket and become known as a crooked cop and also putting additional stress on his marriage. Essentially, being told his career and family had been destroyed for the sake of nothing. Farrell really was MVP this episode!
- "He was a portly man, smelled of bourbon. Flatulent too."

Liked:
- Seeing Paul and Ani together on the hunt. Her and Ray doing a similar scene last episode was also good. I think the character's personal ponderings should be given a backseat more than they have.

Hated:
- Paul and his mother's yelling match. Seemed very forced and I didn't really care about it.
- So many of Frank's lines. I really loved the writing of the first season (even if it was plagiarised and/or grandiloquent*), but it just hasn't worked well this season at all. And unfortunately, Frank has the most of them. Must be hard for VV to deliver some of that tripe.

* Sure, the word "grandiloquent" is ironic in and of itself, but it's exactly the word I wanted to use and it took me ages to find it!

Paul is going to kill someone who ends up being his father. Either that or he has disassociate tendencies and he killed Casper who turns out to be his dad. Or maybe Casper got Paul on footage ****ing a dude and he went HAM. All i know is Paul has a much bigger role to play in this then people realize. His mum clearly used to run up in those parties up north...

I'm not sure if I miss some dialogue (due to the mumbling), or I'm too busy zoning out from the useless dialogue that I miss the crucial stuff.
Glad I'm not the only one.

In fact some details I've only picked up reading this thread after watching.

If it wasn't for McAdams & Farrell I would have flushed this thing by now, but I keep plugging on & the 2nd half of the latest episode provided a glimmer of hope it might pay off...maybe...

Why Don’t People Stop Watching True Detective If They Hate It So Much?

It's possible to watch and enjoy good shows earnestly, and also to like watching shows drown in their own hubris. For example, I do both of those things. Hate-watching True Detective is fun! It's also an interesting part of the TV-scape right now because of its pedigree, reputation, and all the HBO-so-fancy ephemera, but it's also so far up its own ass there's a pancreatic duct asking Vince Vaughn for directions

Season 2 of True Detective is going to go under the same banner as St Anger by Metallica. Both not bad but people are going to be disappointed because of the name of the people who made it.

I'm really liking Season 2 and I think I am because I'm not bothering to compare it to Season 1, I'm treating it as a different crime show altogether even though it's under the same name.

There is some truth to this but i think alot of people (me included) gave up with the comparisons directly a few eps ago. Frankly i think more people are continuing to watch it because its got the TD tag than are still comparing it to the first season.

Farrell and McAdams really strong throughout again. The look at Farrells face when he found out he killed the wrong guy was very well done.
Not sure why there were so many question marks on Farrell and McAdams from various people heading into this. Farrell is a great actor when he wants to be (he strikes me as one of those actors that will appear in a shitty movie just for the money and not care about his performance, but when given a good script he'll rise to the occasion) and McAdams has always been underrated.

Never rated Kitsch just because he rarely shows emotion but he's been ok. Vaughn has been meh but what can you expect... obviously he was chosen more for his tall stature and 'presence' than acting ability.

They could have done the clunky backstories in 2 maybe 3 eps, now we are left with 3 eps to close it all out.
To be fair Season 1 did this a bit as well. It still annoys me how in the 2nd last ep of S1, Rust just suddenly has a thought out of no where that maybe the "Green Eared Monster" had green coloured ears because he had been painting, and low and behold they have before and after pictures of a green coloured house in their files, and they track the killer down that way - all within the space of about 25 minutes. Just seemed very rushed and too convenient.

Anyway, as for Season 2 I'm really struggling to see why I should care about who killed Casper and why. A prostitute-loving corrupt politician/businessman gets murdered? Who cares. It's still a decent show (obviously no where near the quality of it's predecessor) but the story is really dragging, and really jumbled/confusing too. The last episode started to move things along finally, but I don't know... barring some sort of massive twist or a deeper conspiracy element, I really don't think the main story has been too engaging (so far). But it will be interesting to see where the characters end up and how they uncover whatever it is they need to uncover.

Series one of TD is like the Stone Roses debut album - groundbreaking, game changing and brilliant overall. Series 2 is like their follow up album Second coming (just not released SIX years after the first) - much anticipated, over hyped but nowhere near the quality of the first. Overall still enjoyable to listen to but disappointing nonetheless.

Yeah Kitsch has done his job so far. But damn, he really does only have the one (glaring) facial expression.

Was okay displaying that anger at his weirdo mother though.

It's the TV version of Kobe's last season, thinks it's still got it, does not have it, never stops shooting. I could never turn my back on such a comprehensive failure in progress.

Yeah feel the same. I wonder if the story went through some re-writes or revisions late in the process, seems very disjointed in parts. And wasn't there some quote from Pizzolato early on about there being some occult angle?

edit: found it

I realize I need to keep being strange. Don’t play the next one straight,” Pizzolatto said. “This is really early, but I’ll tell you [it’s about] hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system".

That seems pretty far from what we've ended up with, been a much 'straighter' case than season 1. Wonder what happened.
