The "You can't act for shit" line had me in stitches. I want to know if Pizzolatto added that in on the day off shooting (probably not) after seeing what Vaughn brought to his show. Though, I didn't mind Frank in the end, though unsatisfying way to go out.

Overall, it ended up being decent television but not reaching any particularly great heights (save for the 'The Rose' which turns out to literally foreshadow Ray's death, and the orgy scene).

Kind of stoked now that I can start Rectify and resume Hannibal. Will watch a third season of TD, but not at the expense of better shows.

killing everyone seemed so cliche and it wasn't even blowback from the Russians.

Vaughn oh look everyone who has ever seen a movie knew he was about to get jacked as soon as his car stopped who is it the random Mexicans.
Colin Farell we need to know where the girl is because you told us you had backups of the evidence lets shoot you a million times and make sure she gets away.

I'm now convinced Pizzalottto doesn't actually know how to end a story after both S1 and 2 have been abject failures

Best episodes definitely at the tail-end of the season. Agree with those who say the setup took way too long and 4 leads is too many for an 8 episode season, hope they scale it back for season 3 (hell, hope there even is a season 3).

Not sure I bought Velcorro and Bezzirides being bang up for running away together after one night, guess there was really no choice after the train station meet. Also unsure why Velcorro didn't at least try to lose the tail in the city before driving out to the woods to essentially commit suicide.

I'm glad this is a complex show. It doesn't hand feed you the plot. That's good. Keeps the people who aren't actually paying attention with shit on their face.

And isn't that really the goal of all TV entertainment in the end, to make people feel stupid? lol. Think you'll find a lot of people who have been paying attention still have a muddled idea of whats going on - too many for it to be the fault of the audience, that's on the show, plot and writing. Just because a show is paying homage or drawing from a particular style, it doesn't automatically mean its doing anything well.

Season One ended fine, everything about it was consistent with the direction the show had been leading in all season but too many fans got carried away about the mysticism of the Yellow King and thought the show was something it wasn't, then raged at Pizzolatto because the ending didn't conform to their own ideas of what the show was. This lingering resentment has just been magnified out of sight when the show completely changed characters, location and theme in Season Two.

When you consider so many fans turned on the show back in Season One because it didn't match up with their expectations, then S2 with a completely new cast, location, story and theme never stood a chance really. Many of us here predicted this happening but I've still found the extent of hate this season has copped to be ridiculous and so repetitive, phrases like 'poor acting', 'jumbled mess', 'generic cop show' have just been thrown around far too liberally by people who are intent on hating it.

They had a GPS tracker on the car, the real question is why he didn't just jack a random car at the school and then leg it

They were going to be tailing him anyway and probably could've called in support from elsewhere if need be.

The way I saw it they were parked around the corner waiting for the GPS to move to begin the tail you have a better chance in a random car than one with a homing beacon on it

Because he knew they had eyes all over him at that stage anyway, he was never going to shake them in time to make the boat and didn't want to risk getting captured doing a runner because that was the only way they could find out where Bezzerides went with the case files. If he'd jacked another car he'd have been apprehended pretty quickly and they'd eventually be able to get Bezzerides' location out of him, by playing along and taking the car with the tracker he bought her as much time as he could and made sure the secret died with him.

If this season gets binge watched, it's ****ing fantastic.

The biggest issue was not recalling week to week some of the characters or the story. Hitting the entire season over a few days, it'd be so much easier to follow.
Really enjoyed the season though and like Buckleys Jocks said, I think some people want to hate it just to hate it.

Thats what I mean by trying 'losing' them. He even said to Bezzirides on the phone he'd find a parking garage.

Yeah I suppose so, wouldn't have hurt to try though. No need to make the boat, he knew where she was going, I'm sure he could get down to Mexico a few days later by himself once he was sure he wasn't being followed. And if it went bad he could commit suicide by cop to protect her just as easy in a parking garage as he could out in the sticks. Just seemed like it was his very first course of action when it should have been his last.

Anyway, small quibble in the scheme of things.

Dumbest thing I've ever seen.

-GPS tracker with a giant red LED on it hanging out the side of the car
-he didn't shoot it off
-he didn't steal another car
-he didn't run through backyards and jump fences etc. to lose the tail
-they're driving a big 4WD and he's in a V8 muscle car, yet he never decides to put his foot down and buy a few minutes so he can steal another car or escape
-already killed 2 of the guys and there's only 3 left (including a crippled Burris), yet he decides to run out into the open and give up his advantage

Could have been written so much better.

Also, I think I'm in the minority when I say that I liked Vince Vaughn's performance (despite the rubbish lines he had to deal with).

You'll be back champ. I'll save you a seat for season 3.

Nah, I’m actually being serious.

I absolutely loved the first season (even the ending that everyone else seemed to hate) and I was really excited for the second season and thought the casting was really interesting. The trailer really whet my appetite and I was itching to watch the opening episode as soon as it was available … but I was really underwhelmed. And that just didn’t really change the whole way through the season. There were some great scenes scattered throughout, but they were outweighed by the negatives.

Because of how much I loved the first season, I continued through to the end in the hope that it would somehow be saved and the earlier episodes would be worth it with the eventual payoff. But that never happened.

True Detective has run out of credits now. I made a conscious decision a couple of years ago to only watch TV that I really want to watch and this doesn’t make the cut. The only way I’ll watch again is if friends pester me to give it another chance, but without that, I’m out.

Was it as bad as everyone is saying? Have resisted watching so far

I disagree mate, as soon as he knew he'd been made he knew the only way he was going to be able to get out and try and buy Bezzerides time was to play along with them and take the car with the tracker so he could lead them away. If he took another car they'd have pounced immediately and may have even been able to take him alive. His mug shot was all over the news, his only money was in that car and he had a deadline to make the boat that was impossible to make if he was going to effectively shake them off. There was a only a small window in which he and Ani could realistically get out of Vinci alive and he knew he'd blown his, taking the car with the GPS allowed him to convince Bezzerides and Felicia to leave without him, and gave him a chance at being able to say a proper goodbye to his son.

He had no advantage at all, as soon as he'd been made he was a dead man and he knew it, doing a runner would have been an exercise in futility and he knew Bezzerides probably would have missed the boat waiting for him. This was absolutely the way it had to go down, watch the scene again for Velcoro's facial reactions and it's clear to see Ray knows he's ****ed either way there.

They had no idea where she was he could easily have led them around and still made the phone call for her to leave even if they took him alive and tried to beat it out of him she is long gone. If he was so resigned to dieing why did he still try to grab the bag of money from the car and run off into the woods, he had options it was just sloppy writing

I disagree mate
Fair enough.

I just thought it was odd to write him off in a half-assed way after what had happened during the episode.

We were reminded once again of the strength his son gives him to keep on going on, he and Ani had started something together, they were nearing the end of the case and avenging Woodrough's death, and he just received a huge payday. We had all these elements introduced and reintroduced, yet just a few minutes later, he's sitting on the freeway and consigned to dying. He has something to live for and he decides not to take it.

It would have been better if they accosted him in the way they Mexicans did to Frank, imo. They could have tortured him for Ani's location or they could have called her from Ray's phone and traded his life for the sensitive information.

The point is that as soon as he made the decision to visit his son Ray was a goner, the only way he was going to be able to buy time for himself was to do what they wanted, which was to drive out of there in that car. If he doesn't do that or tries to do a runner they'll take him down on the spot and he won't be able to get the word out to Bezzerides, if he doesn't do that she probably doesn't take the boat and ends up getting caught.

Ray had no options and it was not sloppy writing. Ray was in the clear and would have got out safely if he didn't visit his son, he made that decision and he lost the only advantage he had which was them not knowing his whereabouts. As soon as he showed up at the school they were in control of the situation again and he knew it, he had absolutely no options. He's a high profile fugitive with his mugshot plastered all around the country, he had no money save for what was in the car and the net was tightening around him. His only window to survive was to make that boat and he knew it, even if he could have got out and done a runner he knew he couldn't take the boat and risk drawing them to Bezzerides, at that point in time driving out in the car with the tracker was the only option he had.

There is nothing sloppy about the way this has been written, the way they've repeatedly explored Ray's dark past and that earlier moment where he said he was a bad man was always foreshadowing his death, as soon as it was confirmed the man he killed wasn't the rapist there was no way he was going to survive IMO. This way he got a shot at redemption though by sacrificing himself to buy Bezzerides time to get out with the case files and he at least was able to attempt to make things right with his son.

I think the shotty was in the bag hence why it spilled open as he was pulling the shotty from there. He clearly knew he was dying.
