I actually thought we tried quite hard. Our endevour was there, but in the end we lost because of bad use of the ball, not to mention static football.

Geelong's football was played at a much more direct and ferocious pace, mostly because they RARELY kicked the ball onto the wing. Their pace killed us, one of the reasons we were beaten the midfield.

Our delivery to the forwards was good at time, but horrible at others. It's all well as good booting it up in the air, but when crumbers such as Burns as hacks and Carey is not marking, there's gonna be a rebound, after rebound, after rebound, etc.

The heart was there, the skill and potency was not.

Hentshell very very soft. Mcgregor likewise. Carey absolutely no space to move in.
But where we were slaughtered was in the midfield - we got caned.

Sadly Stiffy you hit the nail on the head. K-Rock who were broadcasting the game, couldn't understand in the last qtr, when we still had a chance to win the game ( IMO no chance), why our 2nd string midfield was in the centre and not our 1st string.
Seriously apart from Burton, Stiffy, Begley, and a couple of others, we looked decidedly slow. Probably an abheration based on the speed of Geelongs midfield - Gee Tenace is bloody quick!

You have to realise how hard those conditions were.
Burtons not the best kick anyway, but today one ball would travel 40 mtrs forward and deviate with the wind 20 mtres . The next kick from the same position would not deviate at all.
Tough to allow for that when kicking to leads, or trying to read the ball coming in.

I understand the conditions were "tricky" today. I realised that after Jericho's first kick on goal. He kicked it the right way and to the right position but ht ebloody wing swung it so much it nearly went out on the full.

We have to admit that Burton is not a agood kick in field play at the best of times. They usually have more height than depth. Don't get me wrong I love the bloke but there is no point in tapping him on the back when he does have major efficiencies in his game and field kicking is one of them.

Reckon you have missed a 'd' Stiffy. I would prefer to concentrate my criticism on players who are not giving 100% than ones who are.

Just think Burtons performance has to be put in context of what others did.
When many put lame efforts in , burton was busting his gut.
When players would not go into a pack (Hentschell) Burton just crashed in.
At least he was giving his all for the club.

Disappointing effort today, but some of the imploding is verging on the ridiculous. We did not play well and the reasons are as follows:
our best players had quiet days
our second string midfield was B gade in quality cf the opposition.
our use of the ball was poor - witness Bodes shocking disposal in the last quarter which resulted in a turnover and a goal to the oppostion.
Our close in work was largely ineffective due to sloppy ballhandling
We failed to use the wind and oval correctly - most of Geelong's goals came from the grandstand side. On the other hand we mainly went to the outer side.
We need to recruit some gun midfielders in the next draft - we cannot afford to have the players we had in the square for too many more games or we will continue to get smacked.

Only problem is we need gun KPP and ruckmen too.

Smart recruiting and trading is needed.

Spot on Kane. I can accept a player who has a fair dinkum crack but makes mistakes. I cannot accept players who are supposed to be in the elite bracket not giving a yelp. There should be quite a few players who feel very embarrassed by their efforts yesterday.

That's been my point all along.

Neither Burton or Stenglein were perfect, but they busted a gut for their jumper.

Could that be said for McLeod, Edwards, Burns etc etc ??

As KG said this morning we had 9 to 10 passengers who didn't give a stuff about playing footy yesterday.

These are the ones that the criticism should be directed at.

Unless we get a great deal by trading away all our half-decent players, we will be left with the dregs. Surely we should look at trading players who are under-performing & that another coach may think they can get improvement from (eg. Daniher with Vardy scenario).

I think he was a huge reason why we won.

I'll stick to the rationale behind playing them on each other, and I would agree Ling probably influenced the game trend, more than Burton.
