Whats the story with Heath end seasons end...does he still harbour ambitions to return to Freo with his gf?

I'm hoping so (damn fax machine!!!!).....but i think he's probably worth more now than a pick #17 which was on offer last year.

I certainly hope he wants to stay. I'm sure he'd be worth more now than he was then, as he's had a much better season.

I recall at the time that he had one year left on his contract so if he hasn't re-signed during the year he should be at the end of what was a lucrative three year deal. If that's the case, he'll probably expect to be asked to take a pay cut to stay. Whether he is prepared to do that I don't know. For that reason he might be a little vulnerable. We are looking for a ruckman and/or a key defender so he could be used as trade bait. I think he ********s all over Troy Simmonds as a player but he seems the obvious candidate.

Having said all that, Black's attitude deserves to be commended. As soon as the trade fell through he put his head down and worked really hard over pre-season. He put himself up to be nominated to the leadership group and was voted in by the players which was a glowing tribute for the work he has done to make the most of his career at the Saints.

I'd love to keep him but who knows. If I'm wrong about his contract status I'll be very relieved.

Ahhhhh...not sure about that one...there are midfielders aplenty these days, but talls who can actually mark & kick straight, you would be struggling to find. Simmonds, is more of a ruckman, but JLO, kinda took his place this year, after failing, himself, at FF. Simmonds battled on week after week out of position, & ended up kicking about 33 goals (?). Would be streaks ahead of Knobel as your #1 ruckman if he went to the Sainters...but a Simmonds for Black deal, would be a little bit lopsided towards the Saints.

A tall who can mark, play ruck & forward is worth a Black and Murray. (If your lucky)

yeah, the same thing is still said about blackie at the dockers, hes just got a great attitude. especially the deep gratitude and respect he had for the dockers, even after hed been traded away. id guess thats one of the main reasons we wanted him back, and i was really disappointed last year when the trade didnt go through (as well as our need for a good in-and-under midfielder, obviously :))

i hope we can get him back, but id say a good key position player and ruckman who is a regular starter is worth more than a fringe midfielder, (even if that midfield happens to be better than ours)

Black won't leave, i think he has resigned. Simmonds for black would work out well for the saints. Freo only have three ruckman on there list, if simmonds left and longmuir got injured I think we would struggle. Simmonds is a good Ruckman win a lot of taps and does well around the ground (his tap work is sometimes predictable and ineffective) Freo already have a couple of outside midfielders so Black despite his talent wouldn't be at the top of our shopping list. I can't see Simmonds being traded for Black

Can remember that Black was almost at Collingwood when he left Freo so I could see the pies being interested. I believe he was on 400,000-450,000 at the saints which was about 50,000 more than the pies offered him and is the reason he ended up at saints. A few questions about him: How old is he? Is he quick? Can he kick? Is he soft?

If he was 24 or 25, quicker than most and had good skills without being soft I could see McGough or someone as well as our first draft pick being offered. (no I don't overrate McGough it's just that he is an in and under midfielder who could feed it to Ball and Dal Santo and Hayes)

Pretty much all of the above. Would love to see him back at Freo... and last year it was pick 27, not 17. What a steal that would have been... :(

I rate Blacky as a player and a person - hope he does well wherever he is. :) (With us would be nice, but can't see it happening unless he specifically states that that is what he wants. Freo will be more interetsted in getting Josh Carr this time around.)

I doubt Blacki would move to another Eastern states club, but his GF ( i dont think there married yet?) & kid are both from WA, & there must be strong ties to return to his adopted state sooner rather than later. Sure he is in the leaership group, but is so is Simmonds, who is also slated to being on the move. The Vice Captaincy isn't as prestigious as it once was, most clubs have about 3-4 players in that group these days.

You are around the money re 1st rounder and a player though...But MCGOUGH? I don't think so....

Im actually pretty sure that Blackie is out of contract but in the process of negotiating a new one as we speak... Is very much a required player, but im thinking he will be asked to take a small paycut. Was one of our most impressive players this season, and is very deadly on that left foot. Hopefully he will be re-signed but of course stranger things have happened.

Im mates with Heath's half brother and i dont think he'll move out of melbourne (thats for sure). He loves his family and with his fiance (i think theyre engaged) and chase (his son), hes loving it down here, close to his parents and the rest of the family.

And from what ive spoken about with his bro, he loves it at st kilda, so if i was a betting man id put a 20 on him staying at moorabin.

Then again, the saints might want to clear cap room for dal santo, ball and riewoldt and co (have they been re-signed?)

So yeah i think he'll stick it out at the saints.

i really hope health black stays. He is now my favourate player, and im actually wanting the number 6 on my jumper. I will get it if he stays. Hes a champ and i cant believe people/saints are even thinking about trading him. He is our powerhouse!!! Seriously...

I just want Gheric, Hamil, and whoevers getting heaps, etc to take say $50,000-$100,000 off their pay. I mean guezz isnt $500,000 enough already for ONE year? What would you rather have? Success, famous, make history, and be happy or have a crap year, broken down side, and not win a grand final?

They should be playing for the team, not the money :(

Don't be an idiot

Hamill was signed to a long term deal to lessen the burden on our salary cap. He's forsaken the big dollars in the short term for the added security of a long-term deal.

No-one wants Black to leave, the reality is that he is out of contract and will need to come to an agreement with the club over the details of a new deal. If he doesn't, he will be leaving the club.

lol, what im an idiot? The only idiot i see is the people who are wanting to get rid of him!!!!! He was one of our best and consistent players this year. They said the players would take pay cuts to keep the team as one, i want to see them stay to their words. If everyone takes a little off, it makes enough room for everyone to stay. As i said, no 'i' in team.

You would think that a few guys on the team would be due for a pay cut or a restructure of their contract. Black would be one of them. He is a gun player and very much wanted by all Saints fans but at the reported $400K you'd have to look at it. I think he is between a $275K -$300K player.

As I said, I doubt any Saints supporters would want Heath Black to leave. We are merely pointing out that because he has come to the end of a lucrative contract that he will need to be prepared to take a pay cut. I thought he had a very good season and that started the moment he nominated and was subsequently elected to the leadership group. All we are saying is that any new contract would be likely to tie him up to the end of 2006 at the earliest so he'll have to weigh up the financial (less money) and personal (WA partner) matters with how much he wants to stay in Melbourne and be part of what we hope to be a successful era.

I want him to stay as much as you but the choice is his. If he does go it will be to a WA team (more than likely Freo) so you'd reckon a ruckman like Simmonds would be the kind of player that we'd expect in return.

I think Freo is his only choice. Also a ruckman / KPP would be more valuable than a mid-fielder in most instances (not all), even after a very good season, so maybe you would need to throw in a pick too I would think. Heath is a very, very good player, but he's not Ball or Dal Santo who have youth on their side as well as their immense talent. A talented ruckman like Simmo could possibly be the difference for you guys for 2005.

Just as an aside - how did Blacky go in your B&F. He was coming off a second placing (albeit in a crap year for us!) when he came to you in the first place. He's also coming over this weekend to be presented with his retrospective place-getters medal, so you'd think that a few of his old mates might get in his ear a bit...

Will be interesting to see how things pan out over the next week and a bit. Oh, but for 7 minutes and a lame-arse manager who can't press "start" on a fax machine, we wouldn't need to be having this conversation this year. ;)

H Black and B Brooks for T Simmonds and a pick > 30 (maybe 43)
Brooks is good will be a great ruckman in the future. He has had it tough with injury, moving around Australia and confidence. Make one last move to WA. will see him be one of the great players for freo.

I'd like to give Barry one more year before trying to trade him. Obviously he just needs a boost of confidence.

If Black wants to go back to WA, I'd only trade for Simmonds, we aren't lacking in any other areas and don't need other types of players or draft picks.

But I'd prefer Black to stay, he is a solid contributer and gives an even and quality performance all the time.

No sh*t you'd take that deal in a hurry. What a ridiculous idea.

Savatage - smell the coffee, this was a good deal, as both clubs would benefit. If the Saints got Snake, why would they want to hold onto Brooks? May as well trade him & Heath to Freo & get Snake & a 2nd round pick. Very fair deal IMO.
Otherwise Knobel......

Anyway Sainters - don't hold your breath that Heath Black is going to sign with you guys for 2005 & beyond...he is currently in Perth & attending Freo's B & F on Friday night, where he will be collecting a retrospective Doig Medal for finishing Runner Up in 2001. You can bet your bottom dollar, that the whole Freo squad will be in his ear to return to Fremantle, espcially the trading guru, Cameron Schwab!

I'll gladly start smelling coffee if you agree to get off the cocaine!

Who's holding our breath about Heath re-signing? The whole point of this thread is that we're looking at the trade options presenting themselves of which Troy Simmonds IS an option.

Barry Brooks who we gave up TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS for, will not be traded over, particularly in a one sided deal as you just described in Fremantle's favour.

He will be a mobile ruck/forward option when he gets over the mental anguish that a knee reconstruction presents. An excellent one at that.

Very fair deal in your opinion? As I said, NO ******** you'd be happy if you were a Fremantle supporter with a deal like that. Dream on.
