Our early picks have usually been average though Stiffy. Just need to look at the year we got you namesake with a late pick, compared to what we did for earlier picks.

PS Off the top of my head, swap Handby for Brent Williams. ;)

Why coaches and players complain about our draft picks is insane. Have a look at the players picked before the saints, its just rediculous! There's Hale, Bartel, Molan, Power, Cole, Reilly all picked before Dal Santo. Fair enough given time some of those will be good players, but Dal is a gun, always has always will.
Then there is Watson, Ladson, Harvey, Elstone all before Maguire! I haven't even heard of most of them! The saints picked up another two good players from that in Brooks and Gram. I won't go on anymore about that.
And to you crows, I wouldn't be getting sad/mad. Your performances have been good. And I don't mind Ayers as a coach. It will be a long climb back up the ladder, I don't know what your draw is like but maybe a couple of upset wins against the rivals Port will be handy.

That is not the point.
The Bulldogs have not exactly been having a good time either, but they have always been triers, and their reward for giving their all is having one pick to your three in the top 25.

Who was the coach of the Saints at the end of 2001 when these 2 were drafted?

He almost deserves to be knighted. 2 excellent selections.

Grant Thomas.

However, credit must go to the recruiting manager because Thomas doesn't have an input as to who gets drafted. He leaves that up to recruiting staff. He just tells them the type of player he would like and they go out and try to satisfy his needs.

Get Alan Stewart I say :D

Sense of hypocrisy there in your post...you sniff at 'Hale, Bartel, Molan, Power, Cole, Reilly' because they haven't made a mark yet, but suddenly Brooks and Gram are another two good players, before they've even barely played?

Don't count your eggs before they've hatched...Dal Santo has played a lot more games than most of those players you mentioned out of necessity because the Saints were so crap.

We certainly could have done better, but how much harm has really been done here? Drafting is a combination of skill and luck, we all know that any draft were recast the order would be entirely different. Dal Santo would not have gone at 12 if everyone knew what we know now, and Reilly seems like he will be a solid player, and better than some before and after.

Angwin was a bust, but consider the other player we were though to be at, Luke Livingstone - would it really matter now if carlton went for Angwin and we got Livingstone (we were the market for those 2 players). 2000 was a rubbish draft.
There are some stories about now that some of the staff also favoured Kane Cornes, fair enough, but really who cares? he's not really amounted to an awful lot.

Tim Watson wrote in the Age how when they drafted Lenny Hayes, they didn't really want him, but after all their other preferred players had gone, they picked him up.
There's a lot of luck involved, and I think our draft record isn't bad when you consider the quality of our picks. Other teams have had higher picks, grabbed some good players, and burnt plenty as well.

One thing I am sure of, is that a continued spurt of mediocrity won't work either. St Kilda, who stockpiled so many young players in a relative short period of time, need to resign them - as do Freo. if they all come up for renewal within a year or so of each other, you can't hold onto them all - the distribution of age, quality, length of contract on your player list is not right.

If that was the best draft ever we did pretty well.

BTW Dal Santo came from the Barry Hall trade who himself is a handy player.
