**help Required Re The Ben Doolan Drafting**

Hi all, would appreciate your assistance if you have any recollection of our famous flop signing of Ben Doolan...

I am taking some stick from a Siddey Swine on another board who has remindeed me of Ben Doolan being the third highest player when drafted.

My recollection is that we wanted elephant bux, but it was a performance-driven contract and that he in fact collected a whole lot less than was suggested at the time.

There were a lot of unhappy Essendon players at the time he was drafted for so much, I remember that, and was it suggested that club had to quickly revise a contract negotiation for him (and themselves) to stem all of this unrest????

Please help if you know.

I do remember that one year the AFL IQ tested the players and that Ben Doolan was discovered to be the smartest player in the league. Apperances can be deceiving.

I was happy with the recruiting of Doolan at the time. I remember him playing some good footy with Sydney and i think it was for around $150k a year that we signed him up for IIRC.

Ben Doolan played no games in his 1st year with the Bombers after being drafted at the end of the 1992 season.

A number of senior players including some who have coached AFL clubs were particularly upset at his recruitment and the $ he was given in his first year.

Nah Rhombus, I`m sure Benny came in `94 i`m also sure that he was on around the 270 thou mark. His best moment for the club was in 1995, we drew with richmond in the home and away. Brilliant game. Benny put his hand up in the last minute of this game, he took on two tigers in time on where it looked like a simple tiger takeaway and their chance to pinch victory, he did well Benny, took both of them on and turned a certain tiger break away/win into a ball up/draw.
The 270 thou he was paid pales into insignificance into what he now earns off the field, travelling very nicely B.Doolan.

I remember on the radio someone saying that he came into the rooms and was really left to himself and made quite unwelcome by the players.

Guy was saying he really pitied him. (Cant remember if it was a player at the time)

Big bum midfielders belong at Collingwood. should have let him go there instead.

no he came at the end of 92 and never played in 93, i remember him playing reserves against collingwood in 93 but he was out mostly with a groin injury.

In 94 I hated him and was glad to see him de-listed, the bolke could not run he kicked loopy passes that gave the opposition time to spoil or take possesion from us and he could not take an overhead mark.

I heard he went up bush to the ovens and murry region and even they did not like him.

Fairly sure he coached one of the sides to the woodern spoon and quit football all together and started playing rugby union for a side in Albury. Another of his ex-team mated Danny Morgan is now in Shepparton and reads the news on the ABC

He came in the 1993 Pre-Season draft (Pick 20). He was our second pick that draft, Watson being the first.

Cockatoo-Collins was pick 42 in the 1992 National Draft.

Yeah I work at Essendon Footy Club.
All we do there is read and post on BigFooty.
