Henin set to retire

This certainly came as a shock to me! I know she hasn’t played anywhere near her best this year and the spark seems to have gone but the decision seems pretty premature. She’s only 25 so probably has another 2-3 years at the top of the game but she’s achieved pretty much all there is to do so maybe she’s satisfied with her achievements. I doubt she’ll retire for good but I wouldn’t be disappointed to see it happen because quite frankly, I can’t stand her. Is an outstanding player but I was never a fan.

She has officially announced her retirement. First female tennis player to retire while they were No 1. I'm a bit suprised but I guess she would be happy to have retired on top. A shame for her she never captured a Wimbledon title, she was definitely capable of it.

farewell to JuJu

i loved this girl, while she had her down moments, she was always a fantastic competitor and got the job done. Fantastic player, and i for one will miss her

Yeah, couldn't believe it when I heard it. Have a feeling she'll come back one day tho. Will be good to see the #1 ranking swap and change a bit more now.

Jeez, amazing... Oh well she is mid 20s still healthy with no serious injuries, and a multi-millionairre... I am sure she is happy atm :)

Congrats to a fine career, good luck in the future Henin...

*Opening bets on what year she returns from retirement*

Yay. Ivanovic should become number 1 soon.

Sharapova will be the new #1. Ana has a lot of points to defend at the French, if she doesn't win it, or Wimbledon where she's also defending a lot of points, I can't see her getting to #1 this year.

Also do you think she would be a deserving #1?

She is my favourite player, she's stunning, has a fantastic game and all the shots, and when on song can match it the best, but I don't she is a deserving #1. Yet.
She looses too many matches against players who aren't of her quality or class, like the woman she lost to this week. She's about 60-70 positions below her, she should have blown her of the court inside an hour. She has the game, but not the mental strength, and until she gets that, I don't think she deserves to be #1.

Well I think it'll be a lot easier for her now to claim the title. She doesn't deserve it, but comparitively to Sharapova, she's a lot less mature. I think Ivanovic is just starting to develop the mettle needed to be number one in the world. Admittedly however, she'll struggle to get the mantle from Sharapova now, given she has a lot more points to defend at both the French and Wimbledon, and Sharapova doesn't feel like a "cow on ice" anymore apparenlty.

Just hoping she pulls something out, because I think she should have the wood over most of the competition at the French. Jankovic might actually start doing something as well.

Yeh she’ll probably feel a bit more pressure at the French Open now because most will expect her to win. She’s in a bit of rough patch at the moment but that wasn’t unexpected given she had a long lay off after Miami.

She lost to Elena Dementieva in Berlin as she seems to have a lot of troubles against her. Just the other day she lost to Tstevana Pironkova who she shouldn’t be losing to. Pironkova is a handy player and has some talent but it’s losses like these that are hurting Ana and you’re right, she doesn’t deserve to be #1 if she’s losing to opponents like this. She can beat anyone on her day, and she will win a Slam before too long, but she’s not ready to be #1 just yet. The top players like Henin, Williams and Sharapova all destroy their opponents and don’t let them into games whereas Ana seems to have lapses in matches which she needs to work on. When she works on her consistency she’ll be ready to top the rankings. I expect her to defend most of her points at the French Open because with Henin out of the picture there aren’t too many clay courters that you fear.
