Hobart Stadium: $750 million cost

It’s a crock. Absolute greed.
AFL just don’t want to spend its TV agreement money on the basis of the COVID restrictions in 2020 and 2021.
GWS and Gold Coast being accepted with substandard stadiums is hypocritical.

Its called trying to force the AFL to take a team it doesnt really want. GWS and Gold Coast were very much wanted by the AFL.
Note that the Tasmanian Government hasnt been exactly whining about the stadium.

So, when might we see actual designs.

Well done on McLachlan for fleeting everyone and only spending 15 mill of AFL’s money. 240m of federal taxpayers money. Guy has serious influence

Tasmania wanted a team so they pay for a required stadium and asked the feds to pitch in.

The AFL shouldn't have even put 15 mill in, no other sport puts their hand in their pocket for stadiums.

Look at cricket getting the benefits from all the AFL's work and the NRL and soccer getting new stadia for nothing.

That’s the the thing.
Tasmania have stadiums. They have Launceston and Hobart. This is AFL’s way of influencing state and federal politics.
Would never hear NRL, A league or cricket even ask for that, yet another stadium for Tasmania with only 23-25k seating.
Crazy stuff

There is a difference between a stadium with 19,500 ‘capacity’ which includes grass hills and limited media and corporate facilities vs a stadium with 23,000 ‘seats’ with no standing room and lots of media and corporate facilities. The later which is considered necessary in ensuring the new AFL team that the state wants can be viable.

Afterall, the AFL could just continue without the TAS team and not have to be worried about the financial risk.

Actually this prompted a thought from me: when they say 23,000 capacity, is that 23,000 seated capacity pus standing room? Or 23,000 capacity including standing room (i.e. seated capacity fewer than 23,000)?

Hopefully the former rather than the latter as then they could still have a max. capacity of around 25,000.

You not familiar with the recent stadium issues between the NRL and NSW Government, or the SCG request for upgrades or the A-league requested a stadium in Tasmania or the regular cries from the A-league about non football speciic stadia...

Maybe like optus its no standing room at all?

Not quite true, the Melbourne Cricket Club put up $165 mil of the cost associated with rebuilding the $470 mil Ponsford/Members/Olympic Stands at the MCG between 2004-2006. The AFL put in another $125 mil at the time. :thumbsu:

*over time. the AFL didnt pay 125m up front or over the construction period, its an annual payment over the life of the usage agreement that is indexed to CPI and separate to match costs.

Dillon said the stadium will have a roof.
This is the one thing I'm annoyed about. It doesn't need a roof. It rains less in Hobart than it does in any other capital other than Adelaide. Waste of cash, put in more seats.

Is the new stadium going to incorporate the new clubs home base? Training facilities, offices etc eg Ikon (Princes Park) on steroids?
Hope so, isn’t that how they messed up the Suns? Not planning that properly?

I’d think if this place has a roof, which would rule out test cricket (but not ODIs, t20), there would be a deal cut with the TCA/Cricket Australia to train out of Bellerive. Just speculating but seems a workable solution. You don’t get more than 10k a day to the shitty occasional test Tassie gets (obviously the Ashes game was a one off exceeding that)

Yep that's correct. The MCC members get slugged a percentage of their annual membership fee to cover their share for at least another 12 years.

That said, there isn't an AFL team that hasn't benefited from generous government grants to do up their grounds and training facilities. Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Carlton, Saint Kilda all immediately come to mind 👍 The AFL generally gets away with some pretty good facilities that are mostly funded by tax payers. Even Marvel Stadium is getting a very generous State funded make over. It's probably right that the AFL should contribute somewhere. 🙂
