I worked damn hard to get a high TER at a well respected private school so I could get into any course I wanted, which has worked out very well for me. Only one of my subjects was scaled, and I did the big 5.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make! I'm just trying to point out that nothing is gifted to you in life and if you don't have the motivation for anything, you really aren't going to get satisfaction out of much.

Uhhh....

Are you in Year 11 or year 12? If you're in Year 11, don't put yourself under too much strain. If you're in Year 12, just dream of that day in 7 months or so where this weight you forgot you were carrying just drops from your shoulders.

There's people in all kinds of fields pissing their life away, not sure why teachers are getting picked on...
Difficult job, have to deal with non-intelligent yet know-it-all kids, get paid very little, not many career prospects outside the field etc. etc.

Make no mistake, I have a lot of respect for passionate teachers and I really enjoyed some of my classes - but those older teachers who are completely fed up with the job and take that out on their kids are the worst.

Academically the most successful person I know is one who apparently failed high school english, didn't do TEE and was regarded by most teachers as a sped, today his well on his way to being an english teacher and is excelling in his double degree.

It's funny my mate's old man (different era but still) failed high school english and now lectures the subject in US universities.

This. If you're in Year 11 (excluding any 3/4s you may be doing) don't worry about not getting those 80%s if it is causing you too much stress getting in the right frame of mind/fresh for year 12 (at least the second half) is more important. But yep from the start of term 3 just know you have little over a term and you'll never have to work like that/this ever again.

Man, I must be doing life wrong according to the rule book of some in here...

I have just completed a Chemical Engineering degree, got my honours, and am now doing a postgrad diploma in another subject area to further my qualifications. My preference was to have a grad job straight out of uni, but life doesn't always work out how you planned.

It was certainly hard to get motivated for more study this year, but you simply just have to push through, especially when the end goal is a solid career in the industry you studied for.

I'd love it if I was good enough at sport that I could make a career out of, but I'm not, so you just have to find what inspires you, and work towards that.

The top private schools provide a very good environment to suceed.

Many of the government schools just let you rot.

Year 11. I'm just working on a study routine and balancing it with my own time, so I'm set for next year.

Probably spent a bit too much time on certain things last term.

I think you're taking it too seriously. Year 11 doesn't mean anything. Get decent grades, do your best in Methods but don't put yourself under a huge amount of stress to get things right for next year because you'll start to sag under it. Consider Year 11 as a trial for Year 12; push the boundaries of study (to either extreme) and see how you study the best.

The only subject I want to go real hard on is Methods. I'm not the most gifted of Maths students, so I want to make sure I do well in year 11 methods, as sadly with Maths, if you do poorly in one area, it's going to come back and hurt you later.

3/4 P.E (I'm really only 1/2 but our school teaches us 3/4) and 3/4 R&S (catholics ) are also where I'll be looking to spend time.

I agree on what you've been saying. I tended to waste time last term and I was stuck doing work far too late. I'm developing a routine and seeing how that goes now.

From my experience, Y12 was overrated. People make out that if you don't do well it's the end of the world. It depends what you want to do with your life but I know quite a few people who didn't do Y12 and are a lot more driven than people who are now at Uni. However if you want to do something at Uni, you will probably have to work hard at some stage in order to get in whether it is at school or TAFE so you might as well save time and make it school

I got 88.55 in Year 12, but I had family issues and got into my course (91.5) through SEAS. If I did more than an hour or 90 minutes study every night of the week in Year 12, it was a miracle. Some nights I did nothing at all.

Just be confident, make some notes, read other people's notes and make yourself a favourite with the teachers so you don't have to stress too much if you miss a deadline. Try and make it easier for yourself than it needs to be, because I'm reading this post again and what I'm saying sounds like a load of preachy crap.

Some people do work, some don't. If you do work, you're better odds at getting a better score. If you don't, and you stick to what you're good at - you're still a good chance.

Well the course I'm thinking of doing requires a 90+ ATAR. It's really the only reason why I see year 12 as important for myself.

Of course, I'll probably end up going to uni, hating the course and changing, but I'd rather have options.

I'm feeling the same way, except I am trying to learn a new skill associated with my industry. Just having a really hard time being bothered to look at it after a full day at work. It's not required, necessarily, but it will probably help a lot to know it well.
