U.S. suit seeking $100 million from Lance Armstrong heads to trial

A federal judge on Monday cleared the way for a U.S. government lawsuit seeking nearly $US100 million ($A131 million) in damages from disgraced former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong to go to trial, according to court papers.

The U.S. Justice Department alleges that Armstrong defrauded the government by accepting millions of dollars in sponsorship money from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) as he led the team to a string of Tour de France victories while doping.

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour titles and banned for life from bicycle racing in 2012 by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after it accused him in a report of engineering one of the most sophisticated doping schemes in sports.

An explosive secret tape recording at the peak of the Essendon drugs saga has been released.

The Herald Sun has published a copy of the crisis meeting, held on August 8, 2013, just hours after the AFL told the club charges would be laid against it, former coach James Hird, football manager Danny Corcoran, club doctor Bruce Reid and possibly senior assistant Mark Thompson.

In the recording, Hird, Thompson, Corcoran and club chairman Paul Little appear to be furious, suggesting they felt the AFL was threatening them to accept the sanctions or be stood down.

Football star ruined by West Coast Eagles ‘Volcanic’ drugs culture
The day after the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery and drug trafficking in the Victorian County Court, AFL legend Garry Lyon described the infamous West Coast Eagles drugs culture as “volatile and volcanic”.
The former Werribee best and fairest winner’s barrister Peter Kilduff claimed Sharp’s personal problems could all be traced back to the drug abuse issues that he first experienced after joining the Eagles officially as a 19-year-old through the 2007 rookie draft.
Sharp was approached by a senior Eagles player during his first pre-season and told “you’re either in or you’re out” in regards to the culture of drug use.

Crazy story.

Usually I would pass it off as a guy placing the blame without taking responsibility but this one is intriguing.

2005 pre-season
2004 National draft

29: Matthew Rosa
37: Mark LeCras
44: Mitch Morton (F/S)
57: Brad Smith
2005 Rookie draft

9: Benjamin Sharp
25: Beau Wilkes
40: Ashley Thornton
52: Aaron Edwards (re-drafted)
Whilst not by any means knowing the full story (and not doubting the culture of the Eagles at the time was atrocious), it didn't automatically toxify the others he was drafted with. Edwards was a loose unit even prior to footy apparently so being drafted to them was like pouring petrol on a bushfire, but I think it must have been the sub-group of players Sharp immediately felt closest to.

Government rejects call for supplements investigation

THE FEDERAL government has rejected calls for a Senate inquiry into the investigation of the Essendon supplements debacle.

Sports minister Greg Hunt on Friday said his department had not received any new information that would warrant an inquiry.

He added the opposition had agreed with the decision.

Former Essendon football manager Danny Corcoran, one of the key figures in the supplements saga, said he was disappointed, but not surprised.

The Essendon saga just took a new twist. Dean Wallis appears to be talking as part of his compo case. From a HS story I just saw on the ASADA, WADA and Drugs in Sport board. Essendon allegedly sought assistance from Mick Gatto.

"ESSENDON is fighting damning new allegations that club bosses reached out to underworld enforcer Mick Gatto, removed injections regimen emails, and covered up cocaine use, sexual harassment and fraud.

Dual Bombers premiership hero Dean Wallis and ex-team services manager John Elliott have made the explosive claims as they pursue WorkSafe compensation actions against the club.

Mr Wallis, a former Dons assistant coach and team services and logistics manager, alleges in his statement: “I have been scapegoated in relation to the supplement program, while others at the club have been covering up the use of cocaine, sexual harassment and fraudulent behaviour.”"
