Ill take Bourke playing his guts out in the twilight of his career over Gaspar running around in his prime just waiting for his paycheck anyday
when i was a kid i patted bourke's back after a game and he was soaking wet from sweat and was absolutely spent,i don't think i've ever seen gaspar even raise a sweat during a game hence the reason why he does'nt take a shower after a match.

Similar experience tigerboyz.

I remember standing outside the player race as the Richmond players walked through in 78 as a kid.

What impressed me was that they all looked so stuffed. Sheedy looked as if he had gone through the wringer. it was an impressive sight of a team that gave its all.

Now the only place we are stuffed is on the scoreboard

Just a bit of nit picking on my behalf.

Wiley probably shouldn't be in the champion category. He was a really good player but personally I'd rather replace him with Bryan Wood.An awesome winger during the golden era of awesome wingmen.Held his own regualrly with the likes of Schimma,Greig,Flower Turner etc.

Jimmy Jess was a champion in my book too.

Dennis Collins lol.I'd forgotten about him.He was the one with the huge black beard who played on the wing.I don't remember him being a total dud.

Dont mind nit picking, evo, as I was interested as to what other Tiger supporters thought of the breakdown. As a kid you can get it a little distorted.

I thought people would challenge me on Barry Rowlings before Robert Wiley.

Dennis Collins cut us up one day while playing for Carlton. Got big money at Richmond since we went after him which apparently was one of the reasons guys like Cloke and Raines challenged thier pay and eventually left for the scum.

that 1980 side when in flight were unstoppable, how many big scores did we kick that year.....

they also played with passion and guts something our team hasnt played with since..... ;)

so many standout games that year...

bombers at the g...

game against the saints at the g...

north at north...

south in the last game at south when we lost.....

and then those crushing victories in the finals.....

no case to answer 1980 side for me.....

I think what most people are trying to say, that all being equal, if the 1980 side was trained for football 2005 style, our current duds would make handy reserves players!!!

Ohhh so we take the 1980s team, give them the skills of today and then get them to compete
I know this whole thing is hypothetical, but that's just stupid

Our current list that finished last in 2004 would absolutely cream any team from the 80s
The competition was only just coming out of being an amateur league, players still had full time jobs
Physical development and team strategy is 100 times where it was 25 years ago, the players of the 80s wouldn't know what hit them if they saw a game played with the pace and athleticism that it is today

You're in fantasy land if you think otherwise
It's always difficult to compare players/teams from different eras, but what you are saying is basically akin to saying Don Bradman wouldn't get a game in the current Australian XI. If you are basing it on him getting a game based on the amount of training, tactics, development etc he got compared to what players today get, you may be right. Its also like saying Juan-Manuel Fangio would finish last in a formula 1 grand prix today driving the cars he drove in the 1950s. But when you compare talent and what the players could achieve with the available resources, its a different story. There are some players who are a product of their era (eg there aren't too many 6'2" ruckmen these days, but in the 60's they were common). But there are plenty of players whose talent would carry them in any generation given the resources of the time. I've seen old video of Hadyn Bunton doing a training drill and his balance was amazing (Robert Harvey is one of the few current day players comparable). If an 18 year old Bunton was drafted today, I have no doubt he would still be a champion. That's the real point of this discussion.

I agree with you 100%, its hard to make these comparisons, but its stupid to simply say the 1980s side would beat our current side
Comparably for their time, they are an entire ladder apart, that much is no secret, but line them up together at their peak, with no special considerations given and their is no contest. The current team would run circles around them

Whilst you cannot line them up against each other in a game of football, you can break down the playing list into champions, critical players, plodders and duds. Critical means players who could have some sort of influence on a result.

When you consider we had five champions and plenty of critical players then that is consistent with the winning formula of today. Our side today is so light in those two categories.
