So lets say that Watts plays every game next year, he averages 7 marks, 2 goals and about 12 posessions per game. Do you still give away a first round pick for Pavlich at the end of the year??
I would because having 2 gun key forwards makes you a better side and lot less predictable.

Its rare that both of them will have a bad day at the same time so that reduces your chances of defeat.

Pavlich has also shown he can play just about any position on the field and that in itself is a big plus when recruiting someone.

It's a well known fact Pav isn't just a proud South Aussie, but he's a massive Crows fan to boot.

In fact, as recently as last year when Freo beat us at AAMI for the first time he said in his post-match interview (paraphrasing) "I'd love to come back here one day and play for the Crows but it was good to beat 'em."
And on top of that didn't Connolly say that he knows that Pavlich will go home at some stage of his career.

IIRC, he made those comment around the time Pavlich signed his extension.

Every indication Pavlich has given in the past tells us that he plans to come back to SA to play out the rest of his career. The only question is when. Some things point to it being at the end of 2006 season when he still has some quality footy left in him and freo can still get something valuable in return.

I don't know about pav.. He'll come at a hefty price. Pretend we had the 1st and 2nd draft picks in the the draft.. I'd think they'd want both for Pav. This guy is like Riewoldt.. Exactly the same species. Same height, same versitility everything.. Freo would want a heck of alot in compensation. You'd have to see which players you were going to get for those draft picks and compare them to Pav. I'm a person who is relctant to give up draft picks, especially really high ones.

Yeah, this is basically spot on. Assume Pavlich gets his AA guernsey this year, he would probably be at the peak of his football powers come the end of the 2006. I guess one way to dream up a scenario is to think of how much you'd want for Mark Ricciuto... that will be approximately Freo's asking price.

Just putting a hypothetical out there:

C. Cornes for S. Thompson and minor change?

We already have a third man up backman. They're a dime a dozen. I can't really think of anyone on your list we would swap Thommo for. Maybe a younger Tredrea.

Freo's asking price isnt necessarily what they will get or take for him if he decides to come home. Just as Port demanded the world for J.Carr and got a handful of draft picks, Freo might have to settle for what ever we bloody give em or risk losing him for nothing. The key question is, does Pavlich want to come home? If he wants out, there isnt much they can do about it.

Exactly. I haven't been a fan of trading for players that are 24+.. They'd cost usually alot becausd they are mature and they might drop off.. Its like trading for St nick but older :o What would they want for him!/?

Or we could just trade him to Port who would offer us more.

Ironic thing is that Pavlich may well have left 2 seasons ago when Crows chased Carey instead of him. Pavlich said on radio the next day that the Crows showed no interest in him and were only after Carey, while he didn't really want to play for Port.

I agree but you have toe weight all the pros and cons. 2006 seems like a good time because by this time I think we would be in a good position to be contenders in 2007 season while our guns are still contributors.

Wishful thinking here Most of them will be 30+ and in decline Some already are We are 6 years away from a top 4 side The only guns likely to be playing then are thommo and rutten if he continues to develope the others will have to be replaced

i'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but at the time i was against getting ottens, he would of cost us thommo and meeson, but he would be sooooo handy now. If the recruiting staff had done their job properly we should have plenty of midfielders of good quality, bit like geelong has done with lateish and rookie picks. That way we could of had fev as FF if we hadn’t offered him a pathetically small amount of money, Ottens as a deep forward and when pav had actually asked to come come we should showed him where to sign. That would be a premiership forward line even with an average midfield. We must be one of the most incompetent clubs going around considering the money and large support given by the members.

How much for Chad Cornes?

Pavlich is signed at Freo until the end of 2007,he signed a contract extension midway thru last season. Fair chance of being made captain next season as well.
Best chance for your mob is to have a big crack at him then but he wont come cheap.

He can still be traded as he is not in the 1st year of his contract, but it makes it harder. May also depend on who is coaching Freo. I doubt Pavlich would be worth chasing in 2008 as he would be too old for our needs by then.

What your needs wont be for a gun player?? If he ever wanted to head to Adelaide - he'd probably do it when he needs a paycheque to retire ie. Carey

The funny thing is both SA clubs had the chance to take him in the draft the yr before we got him, and didnt.. you've had 2 chances now - 3rd times a charm?>

Not likely. Any chance of Pavlich doing that disappeared when the Carey trade didn't work out.

Pav's last chance to play for Adelaide is realistically coming up at the end of his next contract. We'll see how much he really wants to come home.

True it'd be your best chance, but in the same breath Freo will be in thick of things then, still doubt he would leave... its one of those things i guess he's spent nearly 10yrs growing up with alot of teammates n it'll be that pull to see if he'll go n capt the crows or stay

Its always the gun players that are the topic of going home - jeez i bet there wasnt this conversation about daniel schell
