Hey guys, just checking through our list of recruits and this one has me stuck. Where in the hell will Jordan Russell slot into our team? Surely not as a smallish defender? Please don't dish the lad just wanting to know how he would best suit us when in our best 22 for a particular game?

Could we perhaps slot him in on a wing, get him mega fit and maybe, just maybe he can become a player in the mold of Wellingham albeit a bit more stockier.

Thoughts guys

My thoughts of him have changed slightly since he joined us, tbh i see him as a depth only player who will struggle to get games next year baring injury. Will definitely become the next whipping boy imo.

Yeah I think hes a little more advanced then say a Simon Buckley. Who knows what a fresh start could do!

I remember Jimmy Clement crossing over from Freo all those years back who had ability but just never got over the line at Freo, would love Jordy to be half as good. Don't think we could use up forward as we have enough options, but your right only a depth player. If injuries occur I would be amazed if he is overlooked though surely in our top 26-30 players bracket.

At the very least it will give O'Brien a kick up the arse knowing his spot in the team isn't a certainty.

If he was viewed internally purely as depth/insurance outside the 22 they would of rookie listed him not senior list.

He will be starting 22 rnd 1, team needs a shake up adding Lynch, Russell and Young will achieve that.

Will be inline for HBF, BP or tagging mid role imo.

Depends on how johnno pulls up from the shoulder think those two will be fighting it out for a spot in the best 22.

If you dont mind me saying, you probably wouldn't want to utilize him as a lock-down/small type of defender. He always worried me a bit defending deep, one on one or against an opponent with decent aerial ability even if they weren't taller than him.

I think in his best year for us he was playing more of a free running half back flanker who could float deeper as an extra defensive/sweeping unit or push up into the midfield. Having said that he can also do pretty well, as it's been suggested, as a midfield tagging type role. And if he gets the ball he can run with it and can kick a ripper lace-out into the forward-line when he wants to.

But I'd avoid back-pocket at all costs.

In 5 years time we will look back and say that out of the three mature aged recruits (with previous AFL experience) Russell was the best pickup, especially seeing as we got him for nothing.

He almost won the best and fairest at Carlton only two seasons ago, that shows the potential he has, and if he can regain that form he will become a massive part of our top 25 or so in 2013 and for a few years after that.

With the aging Johnson and Maxwell down back, and the unknown reliability of O'Brien long term, Russell is exactly the type of player we needed, both now and for the future.

And at least he can provide us some inside knowledge on the scum leading into round 2, if that's all he ever does and it helps us win a game, then he will be worth his pay already/

To be honest I can see him playing a fair few games next year.

He has played some really good games off the HBF in recent years.

Seeing us setup live at games we sometimes go with a 7 man defence with the loose man.

Maybe:

B - Toovey Brown Maxwell
Shaw
HB - Russell Reid O'Brien

Like what? In his past 2 years he has struggled to make the CARLTON best 22.

Not sure we want to make Harry anymore nervous than he already is. The high balls are more than enough already.

Last two years? WTF? He played 16 games in 2011, and missed a few games that year due to injuries.

He had a bad 2012, that's all.

i've heard he had a bad 2011 as well.
Yeah, that's from Carlton fans though, who have hated him for a while, 16 games isn't exactly a bad return in a side that played finals. He has to improve on his recent output, there's no doubt about that, but he has as much if not more potential than Clinton Young or Lynch IMO, just based off past club ratings via best and fairest counts.

They hate him for a reason, much like we hate cameron wood or simon buckley. It doesn't happen overnight.

Ooo dunno about that.. it only took about 3 hours to start hating the Lions in 2002

I'm continually bemused and disappointed at the lack of respect for Harry O'Brien on Big Footy.

Harry has been, and remains, a great Collingwood player.

He has had a few poor games in the last 2 seasons by his standards but
has never come close to being dropped and I don't see this changing in the
coming season at all.

In his most recent game he was clearly our best afield in a preliminary final
yet we now find a Carlton reject in Jordan Russell being talked up as
a replacement.

Jordan Russell is nowhere near the player Harry O'Brien is.

Agree I'm appalled by all this love for a scum reject.

And Harry O is a great man.

Hopefully he turns things around but if you look at our current list and try to figure out who misses out to make way for a player 2years out of form and barely any game time in 18months, you're just plain delusional to be leaving out experienced magpie players for this guy.
I wouldn't even drop Maxwell to make way for him and that's saying something.

Spot on Moca

Standing O for Harry O

similar to mattys123 I think Russell might turn out to be one of our astute trades. He's no superstar and Carlton fans probably disliked him because he didn't live up to his draft pick 9 status. Yes he has a weakness when caught deep one on one in the backline (so does Harry) but I think he'd be value in the midfield.
He's a strongly built mid, good stamina, decent skills and would fill a role there particularly in centre bounces. Plus he has the experience to be the defensive mid that we currently lack..

Our expectations of him will be lower than Carlton's given they selected him so high. A great trade

Who gives the non accountable Hackwell a kick up the arse ?

The sooner he comes to the realisation that he offers very little to 2013 the better it will be for Collingwood

FMD 5th in the Copeland trophy Nepotism is alive and well
