Was just thinking about the race, given it is melb cup day and thought I'd ask, how do you pick who you will go for? Do you always go for the fav? the outsider? Do you have a particular jockey, trainer or owner you try and follow?

For me it is ALWAYS Damien Olivers horse. Ever since he won in '95 on Doremus, when I backed him as a 10 yr old I have followed Oliver.

What about you?

Often just go with the 'hot tip' from a bloke at work or a mate because I have absolutely no idea.

Today that didn't pay off.

Plenty to go on:

  • Recent Form
  • Expectations
  • Mileage in legs
  • Track History
  • Distance History
  • Jockey
  • Weight
  • Trainer
  • Country
  • Age
  • History
  • Jockey's name
  • Jockey's uniform
  • Number
  • Barrier
  • more...

I like to look at the formguide, and sometimes will go for an outsider, with reasonable info relating to above, for a place, and will normally stick with the favourite or one of the favourites to win.

lucky number = 4 and horse thats #4 gets my $$ i think the horse that won was (4) seed or something i saw in the paper!

Bigfooty Punting board.

Has a remarkable strike rate..

I agree... has helped me on a few occasions discard horses and keep some.

For mine I usually follow Caulfield Cup form and look for a lightweight

Jockey and trainer as well come nto it

Then close my eyes and use a pin

i agree.. been out of the loop for many years now... however, a few minutes scanning the Punting board and posters rundown of the cup candidates... made my mind up.... ended up picking the 1st and 3rd horses... cheers fellas...

I backed Delta Blues on two reasons:

It ran home well in the Caulfield Cup, it could have gone harder.

Blues, Carlton.

Astrology - colours and numbers (Got me Delta Blues!)
Form of Jockey
Horse Trainer

I look at recent form and its form over the distance. Also the jockey - have had decent success with Glen Boss and Damien Oliver (I had Pop Roack each way). Other than that I like to go for someone with decent odds. Not too much of an outsider but isn't usually in the top 5 or so.

Always pick whatever horse Damien Oliver is riding. Know his family in Perth and met him a few times over there.

I look who the favourite is then I go back a bit, usually ends up not being a roughy but no certainty
But I know nothing about horses :D
I did get Pop Rock for a place though :thumbsu:
