Still very noticeable in parts. Friedrichstrasse becomes more stark almost instantaneously when you cross from west to east.

The area around the Stasi Museum (which used to be their headquarters) still feels like it's been lifted straight out of a concrete block cut out that you'd expect to find in some constructed workers' city in Siberia.

this beauty in Perth is heritage listed

it probably serves as a reminder of what Perth would have looked like, if the soviets won the cold war

Classic propoganda shot. Probably had pride of place on Stalin's fireplace to gaze at when he wasn't dispatching orders to send his next enemy, real or imagined, off to the gulag, or show trial, or firing range.

Just like the flag raising at Iwo Jima?

USSR vs USA kinda reminded me of Coke v Pepsi.
Interestingly, Pepsi is massive in Russia these days. Coke barely makes a dent on the economy there, which is crazy considering how Americanised their economy become once the market opened up. Russians love their Levi's.

Long story short, but during the cold war, Richard Nixon went over to the USSR and got a photo with some Ruskis – one of the American trinkets they brought over was a bottle of Pepsi. All of these regular citizens over in the USSR wanted to have some, obviously as their leaders were holding this unseen novelty drink. The Russians ended up agreeing to a trade with the US; America got crates of vodka and the USSR got boxes full of Pepsi.

When the USSR collapsed, Pepsi was seen as the drink of freedom and change and the outside world.

Pretty sure Coca-Cola passed Pepsi a few decades ago in Russia.

Pepsi is historically huge in India and Pakistan due to foreign ownership laws. Coke wouldn't do business with the govt, Pepsi would. Coke is popular now but Pepsi is still way more popular than it is here. Lots of cricket sponsorships etc. such as the Pakistan ODI team.

The only place I really noticed it was in Gorlitzer park.

Great Anthem too.
Which they have re adapted.... with changed lyrics.

The sad thing is that for a certain video game (I don't remember the exact one) the cover was a version of that photo but in the American version they edited the flag to make it the US flag.
