How long do we have to wait for another Federer?

Lol, so this year is Federer's last chance to win more slams? You idiot. The guy is a freak and still moves like a 20 year old. He'll be winning them until he's good and ready to retire.

Yes, the guy often plays like a freak.

However, you think he still moves like he does when he's 20, and haven't given a reason to call my opinion idiotic, and so I cannot respect your opinion.

Scary thing about Nadal is that he's 22 and has won four french opens in a row. He has also never lost a match at the french open.

Just out curiosity, can anyone dig up the stats for the average age of the Roland Garros champion c.f. the average ages of the winners of the other slams? I get the feeling it's a fair bit lower.

A young Kuerten looked pretty dominant on the surface then disappeared, Muster had that crazy year then disappeared, Courier won both of his at a very young age, etc...

Anyone?

I believe so.

Agassi and Sampras both won slams after the age of 28 and going back a touch further, so did Lendl, Connors, Becker and some others. I cant see why he wouldnt be able to emulate what those above did considering his style of play.

rafal nadal is at the peak of his game at the moment, but hes seen to be nothing more than a claycourt specialist and a biff merchant, his style of game is pretty physically demanding, its unlikely he'll win more than 10 titles of which most of them come on clay. especially if he plays on a slick court on the US or Aus Open.

Wimbledon has the slickest surface of all Grand Slams.

Not sure you're a keen tennis follower myself.

Here's a prediction.

Davydenko somehow one-slam wonder's the french, then starts to decline. Lock it in. Will be an insane french this year imo. Maybe rafa gets injured beforehand.

I think Rafa can get to Sampras's record as well, whilst federer over teh next 2-3 years might trickle to 16, 17, maximum of 18.

Agassi was a rare case. The strength and fitness he had from 30+ is something I've never seen in my time of watching tennis.

After 28, so 29 onwards, Sampras won Wimbledon once and the US open once. The US open could've been interpreted as surprising by some, however I wasn't surprised he won Wimbledon in 2000 given he is probably the greatest grass-court player in history.

Becker won one grand slam at 28, and before that the last time he won a grand slam was when he was 23.

Connors and Lendl were before my time.

The point is, as you reach the end of your 20's, grand slams are rare.

I believe Roger still has the ability to challenge (ie semis and/or finals) for grand slams this season, however from next year onwards I have doubts. Part of this is based on movement, but also part of this is based on the way he's hitting the ball. He is not hitting it like he did in say 2006 (although he is not far off it). The biggest part of this is his competition.

The thing with rafa is that he's more injury-prone than say Sampras, Federer etc, based on how brutally physical the type of game he plays is. To get anywhere near 14 grand slams is a monumentous task for his game, however I wish him all the best in getting there.

Right now though, with 6 grand slams, he's going down as one of the greats.

I'm not disputing that.

But don't you think you could cut Federer a bit of slack? ;)

well the shit i have copped from fed fans was unbelievable. I dont understand whats the point in some harmless banter? people can dish it out but cant take it back, well we will now see all the fed bandwagoners disappear.

can you cut the abuses out and discuss instead? dont you think federer is past his peak???

Cut the abuse out? Yet you can abuse one of the greatest tennis players ever seen?

Lol, the irony.

I don't think many will say Fed is playing his best tennis, but the fact is that Rafa has improved out of sight and caught up. It doesn't mean Federer is a terrible player all together.

Grow up buddy.

abuse?? haha i stated a fact, he is now nadals bitch. That is a fact, how long has it been since he defeated rafa in a slam? umm like 18 months isnt it? fed is playing what he is capable of, he has fallen from his peak as i mentioned earlier, but he is still playing the best he can at the moment.

Nadal has a greater chance than Federer in my opinion.

The hardest one for Rafa, on paper, should've been Wimbledon.

I do realise that Federer has made the french final three times, and nadal hasn't made the us final, however nadal has won in Aust now which is the closest slam to the US.

Disagree, with the change in the grass at Wimbledon it was going to be the easiest outside the French for Nadal. The US Open will be Rafa's main concern but he'll eventually win that slam whether it is in 2009 is another question though.

The way Nadal is playing..not long. He'll probably win 20. He is 21 he'll win at least another 6 French Open's that is 12 slams straight away and he'll win a few more Wimbeldon's as well.
Fully agree. Federer was a very late developer and had only won 2 slams at the same age as Rafa so theres every chance that Rafa could well go past 14 within the next 4 years at the age of 25 or 26 which would mean he would need to win 8 of the next 16 slams.Highly possible if he stays fit and healthy
