The reason I ask is that it is 3:30 in the afternoon and I'm as bored as batsh*t because my friends are all still asleep behind me. so we went to bed at 5:30 this morning but shouldn't they be up by now?

For me, about 10 or 11 hours is too much! I find that if I have more than that, I wake up more tired than when I went to bed!

Unless I'm sick, then I can sleep for days. ;)

Bergs if you think they've slept enough then why not just wake them. :p

If i don't have to get up for anything in the morning then i'll sleep till midday and feel great for the rest of the day. During the week though i only get around 7 hours as my stupid friend told me how wonderful 9:00 am lectures are at uni.

Then when i get home in the afternoon i can't help but collapse on my bed and have a snooze. Then i wake up a while later and feel like sh*t for the rest of the day and just don't want to talk to anyone. I can't win.

I was reading an article the other day which suggested that you should sleep 7-8 hours per day. Too much longer tends to make you just as tired as a lot less. Of course, there seem to be some people who cope on less.

I can't sleep past a certain time in the morning, usually 7ish, 9ish after a couple of weeks of holidays. I struggle on about 6-7 hours a night, on good nights.

Oh how I envy all you people who can wake up easily at such early hours of the morning. When I've got nothing on, and if I don't set an alarm, I usually wake up about 1pm or thereabouts. Often I wake up at this time and stay in a zombie-like state 'til about 3. It completely wastes the whole day, and makes ya feel like crap 'till late afternoon usually. Trouble is, if I somehow wake myself up before 9, I usually end up falling back asleep mid-afternoon, as my body clock has just got to that stage.

I'm trying to get out of the habit, as I would love to be able to get up at 7 or 8 and face the whole day for a change! Nothing worse than having to get up early when your body clock is expecting a midday wake-up time!

Get a job you bum!

I go to bed late and wake up at 8 on the dot each morning. Somehow i have managed.

Annoys me on Sundays though when i want to sleep in and the body clock is set to weekday hours.

There were times in high school when I used to get up at 3pm every day (during the holidays).

I can easily sleep for 10 hours unless I've been drinking.

I find that after a night out when I've been drinking and say I get to bed at about 5am, I usually end up waking up at about 8am for some reason. It annoys the hell out of me because I want to sleep in until at least midday but can't seem to fall asleep. Most people seem to sleep longer though after a night of drinking.

Do you guys sleep longer, shorter or about the same after a night of drinking?

I work night-shift (10pm to 7am) four nights in a row each week, then I've got three days off to 'drift back to normal' before I re-adjust to nights again. When I first started, I'd often go two days of being awake, sleep about 15-20+ hours, repeat. Very strange to go to sleep Sunday night and wake up 1am Tuesday!

To answer the original question though, I think it depends on the physical and mental exertion. Mentally, I only need about two hours sleep to 'reset'. Physically I might need six or seven to get my energy back. Too much is hard to judge without hindsight.

I've been doing that for the last three years. It's why on the first day of any term I look completely ****ing dead. :D

The longest I have slept was the day after my uni exams finished last year. Went to bed at probably 1am, got up at 4pm. :)

I usually get about 6 hours sleep a night, so right now I don't think any amount of time sleeping is long enough!

Just on the night shift thing...my friend was working 6pm-8am for a month...he'd go to bed at 10:30am and get up by 3pm. Now that's my idea of hell...

I generally wakeup after about 3 or 4 hours after a heavy night. I used to just get up and get on with the day, but I've worked out, it's much better to get more sleep, otherwise I feel like crap. So I just lie then for an hour two and usually drift off again.

having said that, I'm off to bed, nighty-night!

I'm the same. If I've been drinking, my body gets me up early!

I think the body wakes you up because it's dehydrated.

How long is sleeping too long?

I reckon if you were at the big game and just woke up now to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bulldogs last premiership - that might be too long.

Which is one reason why it is good to down as much water as you can handle before you go to sleep. Significantly reduces the hangover.

Strangely I only seem to sleep well on Saturday nights.

During the week it's usually about 5 or 6 hours of broken sleep. Saturday night I usually hit the sack a little late, but don't get up until lunchtime Sunday = 10-11 hours.

Weekdays - 8am is a sleep in even on a day off, unless I've been out and got home at 4am.
