I mentioned this in a reply on the main board. Do you think your side is seriously on the up or have you been dissappointed with the start to the season?

At the end of the day you have played 8 games and only won 2. One against Freo, who are a rabble, and Carlton who were a rabble at that stage?

It's good to see Deledio and foley picking up the slack in the middle but you'd have to be worried about the continued reliance on Richo, the fact that your side is the worst tackling side in the competition and the state of your ruck department.

Whilst alot of people have said or believe you guys are on the up, Im not sold.

We have improved look at our contested ball stats this year compare it with others. Then you look at players as individuals a lot more have moved forwards opposed to backwards. Our backline is a lot better our midfield is stronger and we are kicking goals. We just lack a little bit of consistency and still have some passengers and players that have brain explosions in defence.

We've been ultra competitive against the top 3 sides. Pushed Hawks to 12 points. Drew with the Dogs and had the Cats seriously worried for a half. last year we couldn't have beaten ourselves in an intra club practice match.
We've injected some serious youth into the team.Foley and Deledio have stepped up.
Kelvin Moore has gone from the scrapheap to one of our most improved players.
We are playing an attacking, more-attractive run and carry game, that, until last week, was reaping 100-plus scores each week.
Our defence is now resembling something like an AFL defence and Will Thursfield, in my opinion, is the most underrated key defender in the game.
tambling has improved despite what the knob jockeys on the main will have you believe.
Cotchin looks like he's been in the caper for four years already.
The coaching staff have placed more emphasis on tackling, 1%-ers and it's paying dividends.
We have had the luxury of dropping Bowden, Pettifer and Tivendale to the twos for lengthy periods and are now starting to develop some decent depth in our list. No longer is our 30th ranked player on our list (whoever that may be) just making up the numbers.

Yes, that has been splashed all over the papers. Our game against Freo didn't help, as physical contests between our players and the Dockers were few and far between (cos Freo was very obliging and gave us the ball without a fight).

But while we may be ranked last in tackling, its the subjective pressure that is on the improve. Having heard interviews with a few opposition players, the one thing in common they have is an amazement at the increased physical pressure that Richmond players are placing on their opposition. This may not be necessarily reflected in our tackle count. But its certainly there. And it's certainly partially responsible for our better showings this year.

Unfortunately, we aren't built to bash sides yet, we're still too small. Which is why Geelong ran over us on the weekend. We don't have the strength to continue to harrass at the same level. But we have the spirit, the strength will come later.

And the number one side for contested possessions (or at least we were before last week), so what is the obvious raw conclusion we can draw from these stats?

That we're getting to any loose ball at the same time as the opposition (forcing contested ball), rather than being second to the ball (being forced to tackle instead).

i think saturdays effort was proof enough that we have improved.

regardless of how we got so close, we did.

losing by 12points against hawthorn & 30points against geelong is definitely showing the whole comp that we are on the way up. we just need to learn how to close the deal. with a bit of luck, the smashing we give the bombers on the weekend will move us one step closer to learning how to win again.
