500 so far scarecrow - at a cost of $1.2 million dollars that has been donated by the community and community minded businesses.

This one is a bit close to home for me as I had a workmate die from an undiagnosed heart condition a few years ago whilst playing - came off the line after the 3 quarter time break and didn't even make the contest before falling to the ground and that was the end of it - over at 24.

But it's not just players - certainly in the bush the local footy is a community event and there are no ambulances - even in the major leagues.

These devices save lives.

If Big Footy was ever to have a 'cause' -there aren't many better than this.
It is a great cause TAITA.
Terrible story.
A few grand really means nothing in the long run.

You would think the AFL go over these sort of situations, especially now after Fabrice Muamba collapsed that the pressure for this would be on sporting clubs around the world

I'm amazed people died during their careers.
I would have thought most careers would be ended by it. Top work to soldier on through adversity.

One of the problems in this area is often the player doesn't even realise he has a problem or, if he did know, down plays the concern for the betterment of his career.

The problem remains undiagnosed until it is too late.

In the recent Sports Illustrated article, it was expressed in this way or words to this effect- you have have a faultily designed bridge and cars and trucks continue cross the bridge and the bridge remains solid. Then one day a person walks across the bridge and the bridge then collapses.

An athlete who is highly trained may be able to play for years but then one day, it all comes too much.

Touch wood it does not happen but the odds say that in 700 elite athletes, there is a possibility it is there.

Seemed bump worthy:

"COLLINGWOOD doctors helped save the life of Peter Yagmoor's grandmother after she suffered a major heart scare in the MCG changerooms last week.

Yagmoor was preparing to make his AFL debut against Hawthorn last Friday night when his grandmother, Elizabeth, suffered severe chest pains in the rooms.
Pies medical staff provided immediate treatment before she was taken to hospital by a nearby ambulance for emergency surgery."

Came in to say exactly this. It was Alan Didak.

Yep, he collapsed with an Irregular heartbeat. It was against North Melbourne(comeback game) in 2005 and some people thought Firrito(i think?) decked him. I remember on the same night, was watching White Line Fever with Clinton Grybas(R.I.P) speaking about it and clarified that it was an irregular heartbeat. I used to have the footage of the exact moment but have lost it.
Bumped from old thread for relevance to recent events.

I never heard about this one. I guess less media attention back then.

Is there a video of the incident?

No footage but there is this article:

I think it was the incident involving Richard Osborne in Sydney nearly 20 years ago that sharpened the AFL's act up.

He said he died multiple times on the way to the hospital. Was one of my favourite players as a kid. Luckily they allowed the ambulance onto the ground. If they hadn't it probably wouldn't have ended well.
